Radeon X1900 GT is the simplest video card in the high-end Radeon X1900 chip family from ATI, being an option for those users willing to have a high-end video card but not wanting to buy the most expensive one. Competing with GeForce 7900 GT from NVIDIA, in this review we compared it to several other video cards from both ATI and NVIDIA. Check it out.
Figure 1: Connect3D Radeon X1900 GT.
Radeon X1900 GT runs at 575 MHz and accesses its video memory at 1.2 GHz. Like all high-end GPUs it accesses its video memory using a 256-bit interface. The main difference between Radeon X1900 GT and other current Radeon X1900 family members is the number of pixel shader engines: 36, against 48 on XT and XTX models.
You can see in our tutorial “ATI Chips Comparison Table” the difference between Radeon X1900 GT and the other chips from ATI, while on our tutorial “NVIDIA Chips Comparison Table” you can compare it to its competitors from NVIDIA.
Although this video card is being sold under Connect3D brand, the card itself is supplied by ATI (which, in turn, hires another company to manufacture their boards in China). Check on Figures 2, 3 and 4.
Figure 2: Connect3D sticker is a little big for this fan, don’t you think?
Figure 3: Peeling off the sticker and…
This is a normal procedure on the market. NVIDIA does the same. We are posting this just as a curiosity, as the sticker bigger than the fan caught our eye immediately, and we felt compelled in publishing this.
On Figures 5 and 6 you can see the Radeon X1900 GT from Connect3D.

We removed the video card heatsink to take a look. While its body is aluminum-made, its base and fins are copper-made, which is great, as you can see in Figure 7. The heatsink touches the memory chips, cooling them down.
Figure 7: The heatsink uses copper base and fins.
Figure 8: The video card with its heatsink detached.
This video card has eight GDDR3 256-Mbit 1.2 ns chips from Samsung (K4J55232QG-BC12), making its 256 MB video memory (256 Mbits x 8 = 256 MB). These chips can run up to 1.6 GHz. Since this video card accesses its memory at 1.2 GHz, there is an impressive 33.33% headroom if you wish to overclock it inside its specs.
As the reviewed card featured VIVO (video capture) function, it had a Rage Theater chip, shown in Figure 9.
Figure 9: ATI Rage Theater, in charge of VIVO function.
In Figure 10, you can see Radeon X1900 GT chip. As you can see, it is based on R580 core.
Figure 10: Radeon X1900 GT chip.
This video card comes with 2 DVI-to-VGA adapters, one RCA (composite video) cable, one component video adapter, one VIVO cable, one S-Video cable and one PCI Express auxiliary power adapter.

We adopted a 3% error margin; thus, differences below 3% cannot be considered relevant. In other words, products with a performance difference below 3% should be considered as having similar performance.
[nextpage title=”3DMark2001 SE”]
3DMark2001 SE measures video card performance simulating DirectX 8.1 games. It is very effective software for evaluating the performance from previous-generation games, programmed using DirectX 8. In this software we run six tests. We run the software in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and with no frame buffer, then we put the antialising at 4 samples and the frame buffer at triple-buffering. This improves the video quality but lowers the performance. We were willing to see how much performance we lost by putting the VGA to run at the maximum possible image quality. It is important to note that ATI chips can run at 6x antialising. Since NVIDIA chips cannot run at this configuration, we had to use 4x antialising to use a configuration that is valid to all video cards included in our bechmarks, allowing direct comparison between them.
You may be asking yourself why we added an old program in a review of a latest generation video card. To us, it is as important to know the performance of a video card with the latest games as it is to know its performance in an older game. That’s why we kept this software in our methodology.
The results you check below. Keep in mind that models marked as “OC” are factory-overclocked. GeForce 7900 GT OC from XFX was running at 550 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.63 GHz (815 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7900 GT is 450 MHz/1.32 GHz (660 MHz DDR). GeForce 7950 GX2 OC from XFX was running at 570 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.55 GHz (775 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7950 GX2 is 500 MHz/1.2 GHz (600 MHz DDR).

3DMark03 measures performance by simulating games written to DirectX 9, which are contemporary games. We run this program in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and anisotropic filtering, and then configuring antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering also at 4x.

3DMark05 measures performance by simulating DirectX 9.0c games, i.e., using the new Shader 3.0 model. This programming model is used by Far Cry game and other games to be launched in the future. This new programming model is used by GeForce 6 and 7 series from NVIDIA and Radeon X1000 series from ATI.
We run this program in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and anisotropic filtering, and then configuring antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering also at 4x. This improves the video quality but lowers the performance. We were willing to see how much performance we lost by putting the VGA to run at the maximum possible image quality. It is important to note that ATI chips can run at 6x antialising. Since NVIDIA chips cannot run at this configuration, we had to use 4x antialising to use a configuration that is valid to all video cards included in our benchmark, allowing direct comparison between them.

[nextpage title=”Doom 3″]Doom 3 is one of the heaviest games available today. As we’ve done on other programs, we ran this game at three resolutions: 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32. This game allows several image quality levels and we’ve done our benchmarking on two levels, low and high. We ran demo1 four times and wrote the obtained number of frames per second. The first result we discarded at once, since it is far inferior than the other results. This happens because at the first time we run the demo the game must load all textures to video memory, fact that doesn’t happen from the second time we run the demo on. From the three results left, we consider as our official result the middle result, i.e., we discard the highest and the lowest values. Curiously almost all times the values obtained at the second round on were the same.
A very important detail that we must mention is that Doom 3 has an internal FPS lock: it is only capable of generating 60 frames per second, even if your board is able to produce more frames per second than that. This is done in order to make the game to have the same “playability” sensation independently from the video card installed on the PC. This lock, however, is disabled in the game benchmarking mode.
For further details on how to measure 3D performance with Doom 3, read our tutorial on this subject.

[nextpage title=”Far Cry”]
Far Cry is a game based on the new Shader 3.0 (DirectX 9.0c) programming model available on series 6 and 7 from NVIDIA and series X1000 from ATI graphics chips. We’ve updated the game to version 1.3.
As we’ve done on other programs, we ran this game at three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32. This game allows several image quality levels and we’ve done our benchmarking on two levels, low and very high. To measure the performance we used the demo created by German magazine PC Games Hardware (PCGH), available at https://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/farcry-pcgh-vga.php. We run this demo four times and made an arithmetical average with the results. This average is the result presented in our graphs.
This game has a very important detail in its image quality configuration. Antialising, instead of being configured by numbers (1x, 2x, 4x or 6x) is configured as low, medium or high. The problem is that on NVIDIA chips both medium and high mean 4x, while on ATI chips medium means 2x and high means 6x, making the comparison between ATI and NVIDIA chips completely unfair. Because of that we configured antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering at 8x manually at the video driver control panel.
For further details on how to measure 3D performance with Far Cry, read our tutorial on this subject.

[nextpage title=”Conclusions”]
If we just think about the numeric results, it is hard to come to a strong conclusion on which video card is the best, Radeon X1900 GT or GeForce 7900 GT. Let’s summarized what we’ve seen.
On 3DMark03 benchmarking, standard GeForce 7900 GT was between 12% and 16% faster than Radeon X1900 GT, depending on the configuration we used.
On 3DMark05 things got reversed, as Radeon X1900 GT was faster than standard GeForce 7900 GT. However, at resolutions below 1600×1200 this difference was always below 10%. Only at 1600×1200 enabling image quality enhancements that Radeon X1900 GT was really faster than GeForce 7900 GT: 40%. It is also interesting to note that Radeon X1900 GT achieved the same performance level of Radeon X1900 XTX when image quality enhancements were disabled. Only when we enabled them at 1280×1024 and above Radeon X1900 XTX started being faster than Radeon X1900 GT.
Doom 3 continues to be NVIDIA arena. While at 1024×768 Radeon X1900 GT and GeForce 7900 GT achieved a similar performance, above that GeForce 7900 GT was between 10% and 20% faster.
On Far Cry Radeon X1900 GT and GeForce 7900 GT achieved the same performance level on almost all tests, with a good 10% advantage to Connect3D’s part at 1600×1200 without enabling image quality enhancements. At this same resolution enabling image quality enhancements both cards achieved the same performance level, though.
When analyzing products, we always try to see which product brings the best cost/benefit ratio for the average user. In our opinion, the user that wants a high-end video card but doesn’t want to sell a kidney on the black market to be able to buy the most high end one – like Radeon X1900 XT, Radeon X1900 XTX, GeForce 7900 GTX or GeForce 7950 GX2 – we honestly think that GeForce 7900 GT is the right choice if you don’t need video capture function.
First, while Radeon X1900 GT was faster than GeForce 7900 GT on some tests, GeForce 7900 GT was not only faster in more tests than Radeon X1900 GT was, but also the performance advantage of Radeon X1900 GT on these situations doesn’t justify its higher price – our second reason.
Radeon X1900 GT’s higher price can be explained by its VIVO (video capture) function, which is optional on GeForce 7900 GT. Radeon X1900 GT is quoted at USD 349 at ATI’s website, with the majority of on-line stores in the US selling around this price as well. But we could find this video card from Connect3D being sold at USD 280 at Newegg, which is a really good price, as ATI model is being sold at USD 320 there (and we now know that the two are the same card).
GeForce 7900 GT, on the other hand, can be easily found below the USD 300 mark from several NVIDIA partners at Shopping.com, and it seems that USD 270 is the price of choice for several on-line stores for this video card. Searching Newegg, however, we’ve found a real bargain, an OEM model from XFX being sold by only USD 230. Keep in mind that OEM models don’t come in a fancy box and also doesn’t come with any “extras”.
But if you need video capture, then the choice can be though, as GeForce 7900 GT with VIVO is quoted at USD 290 on several on-line stores. In this case we kick the ball back to you, as the best video card in this case will depend on the resolution, image quality settings and on the game that you will run.
