XG, a division of MGE, has launched an external high-end 600 W fanless power supply, called Magnum 600 External. Yes, you read it right: external. The idea is to provide “true” 600 W power and, at the same time, to help lowering the temperature inside the PC, since high-end power supplies increase the PC internal temperature. Let’s take a look at this new concept.
Figure 1: XG Magnum 600 External box.
The power supply can be seen in Figure 2. Its case is made of aluminum and it doesn’t use any fan at all, thus making no noise. Internally it uses a copper radiator with heat-pipes in order to dissipate the heat that is produced.

As you can see on Figures 2 and 3, it has a LCD panel that shows voltages, the power that is being consumed at the moment and the power supply temperature.

On the backside we have the plugs for connecting the power supply to the PC. This connection is done through two cables. On the place where the PC power supply is originally installed you must install an adapter, which converts the cables coming from the power supply into the cables to be used inside the PC.

This power supply is actually a rebadged Seventeam ST-600EAZ power supply.

[nextpage title=”Conclusions”]
Magnum 600 External seems to be a great product. Its aluminum case helps dissipating its heat and its fanless design is a plus for helping lowering the noise level produced by the PC, but your PC won’t be completely silent, since you still have fans on the motherboard and video card (and maybe extra fans on the case).
Since it is an external power supply, it should help lowering the PC internal temperature.
Its LCD panel is really awesome, since it shows not only the power supply temperature and voltages, but also the power that is really being consumed by the PC.
It carries two PCI Express auxiliary power connectors for feeding two high-end video cards, running on SLI or Cross Fire configuration, which is great since you don’t need to use any kind of converter cable.
The only constructive criticism we have to MGE is to use only one name as the brand name. Using MGE and XG at the same time is confusing. As you can see in Figure 1, XG is the brand name on the box, but on the power supply itself the brand used is MGE. Even though XG is a brand name of MGE, the vast majority of users don’t know about this and can question if they bought the correct product or not.
