[nextpage title=”Introduction”]
GeForce 7900 GT is the simplest video card in the high-end GeForce 7900 chip family from NVIDIA, being an option for those users willing to have a high-end video card but not wanting to buy the most expensive one. But if you want a GeForce 7900 GT with a performance higher than the standard model costing almost the same, XFX provides a full series of overclocked models. We reviewed XFX GeForce 7900 GT 550M XTREME 256 MB with VIVO (PV-T71G-UCP7), which is an overclocked GeForce 7900 GT with video capture function. Let’s see how is the performance of this propelled model from XFX.
Figure 1: XFX GeForce 7900 GT 550M XTREME 256 MB with VIVO (PV-T71G-UCP7).
GeForce 7900 GT standard specs are 450 MHz clock for the GPU and 1.32 GHz clock for the video memory.
XFX currently has nine (yes, nine) different GeForce 7900 GT models on their catalog:
- PV-T71G-UDLR/7: 450 MHz clock, 1.3 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3”. That’s XFX version for the standard GeForce 7900 GT.
- PV-T71G-UCL7/R: 450 MHz clock, 1.3 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900 GT 450M XTREME 256MB with VIVO”. That’s a standard GeForce 7900 GT with VIVO (video capture) function.
- PV-T71G-UDF7/R: 470 MHz clock, 1.37 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3” (notice that XFX uses the same name used by the standard GeForce 7900 GT on this overclocked model).
- PV-T71G-UCF7: 470 MHz clock, 1.37 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900 GT 470M XTREME 256MB with VIVO”. This is the model above with VIVO (video capture) function.
- PV-T71G-UDE7/R: 520 MHz clock, 1.5 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3 Extreme Edition”.
- PV-T71G-UCE7: 520 MHz clock, 1.5 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900 GT 520M XTREME 256MB with VIVO”. This is the model above with VIVO (video capture) function.
- PV-T71G-UDPR/7: 550 MHz clock, 1.63 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3 Extreme Edition”.
- PV-T71G-UCP7: 550 MHz clock, 1.63 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900 GT 550M XTREME 256MB with VIVO”. This is the model above with VIVO (video capture) function. This is the model we reviewed.
- PV-T71G-UDDR/7: 560 MHz clock, 1.65 GHz memory clock, 256 MB 256-bit GDDR3. A.k.a. “XFX GeForce 7900GT 256MB DDR3 XXX Edition”.
As mentioned before, we reviewed XFX GeForce 7900 GT 550M XTREME 256 MB with VIVO (PV-T71G-UCP7), which runs at 550 MHz and accesses its memory at 1.63 GHz (815 MHz DDR).
With this clock specs, this particular model from XFX is positioned between GeForce 7900 GT and GeForce 7900 GTX, which runs at 650 MHz and accesses its memory at 1.6 GHz – as you can see, this overclocked model accesses its video memory at a higher clock rate than GeForce 7900 GTX. Actually there is no other technical difference between GeForce 7900 GT and GeForce 7900 GTX besides their clock rates, as they both share all other specs, including 24 pixel shader engines. In fact, they also share the same basic specs as GeForce 7950, but as GeForce 7950 GX2 uses two GeForce 7950 chips it has everything doubled.
You can see in our tutorial “NVIDIA Chips Comparison Table” the difference between GeForce 7900 GT and other chips from NVIDIA, while on our tutorial “ATI Chips Comparison Table” you can compare it to its competitors from ATI.
On Figures 2 and 3 you can see XFX GeForce 7900 GT 550M XTREME 256 MB with VIVO (PV-T71G-UCP7). As you can see, its DVI connectors are lime yellow and it has a black metallic support on its top, where is written “XFX”.

We removed the video card heatsink to take a look. It is all made of copper, as you can see in Figure 4.
Figure 4: The video card with its heatsink detached.
As you may have notice in Figure 2, the heatsink doesn’t touch the memory chips, so no cooling solution is provided for them.
This video card has eight GDDR3 256-Mbit 1.4 ns chips from Samsung (K4J55232QG-BC14), making its 256 MB video memory (256 Mbits x 8 = 256 MB). These are the same chips used by NVIDIA’s reference model for GeForce 7900 GT. They can run officially up to 1.4 GHz and on this video card they are overclocked to 1.63 GHz. As a curiosity, the Radeon X1900 GT we reviewed used the same memory chips but with a different speed grade (1.2 ns, BC12).
Figure 5: Memory chips from Samsung used on this card.
The VIVO (video capture) function of this card is made through Phillips SAA7115HL chip, shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6: Phillips SAA7115HL chip, in charge of VIVO (video capture) feature.
In Figure 7, you can see GeForce 7900 GT chip. As you can see, it is internally called G71-GT by NVIDIA.
Figure 7: GeForce 7900 GT chip.
This video card comes with two DVI-to-VGA adapters, two S-Video cables, one VIVO cable and one PCI Express auxiliary power adapter.

[nextpage title=”3DMark2001 SE”]
3DMark2001 SE measures video card performance simulating DirectX 8.1 games. It is very effective software for evaluating the performance from previous-generation games, programmed using DirectX 8. In this software we run six tests. We run the software in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and with no frame buffer, then we put the antialising at 4 samples and the frame buffer at triple-buffering. This improves the video quality but lowers the performance. We were willing to see how much performance we lost by putting the VGA to run at the maximum possible image quality. It is important to note that ATI chips can run at 6x antialising. Since NVIDIA chips cannot run at this configuration, we had to use 4x antialising to use a configuration that is valid to all video cards included in our bechmarks, allowing direct comparison between them.
You may be asking yourself why we added an old program in a review of a latest generation video card. To us, it is as important to know the performance of a video card with the latest games as it is to know its performance in an older game. That’s why we kept this software in our methodology.
The results you check below. Keep in mind that models marked as “OC” are factory-overclocked. GeForce 7600 GT OC from XFX was running at 590 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.6 GHz (800 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7600 GT is 560 MHz/1.4 GHz (700 MHz DDR). GeForce 7600 GS OC from Inno3D was running at 500 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.4 GHz (700 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7600 GS is 400 MHz/800 MHz (400 MHz DDR).

3DMark03 measures performance by simulating games written to DirectX 9, which are contemporary games. We run this program in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and anisotropic filtering, and then configuring antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering also at 4x.

3DMark05 measures performance by simulating DirectX 9.0c games, i.e., using the new Shader 3.0 model. This programming model is used by Far Cry game and other games to be launched in the future. This new programming model is used by GeForce 6 and 7 series from NVIDIA and Radeon X1000 series from ATI.
We run this program in three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32, first without antialising and anisotropic filtering, and then configuring antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering also at 4x. This improves the video quality but lowers the performance. We were willing to see how much performance we lost by putting the VGA to run at the maximum possible image quality. It is important to note that ATI chips can run at 6x antialising. Since NVIDIA chips cannot run at this configuration, we had to use 4x antialising to use a configuration that is valid to all video cards included in our benchmark, allowing direct comparison between them.

[nextpage title=”Doom 3″]
Doom 3 is one of the heaviest games available today. As we’ve done on other programs, we ran this game at three resolutions: 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32. This game allows several image quality levels and we’ve done our benchmarking on two levels, low and high. We ran demo1 four times and wrote the obtained number of frames per second. The first result we discarded at once, since it is far inferior than the other results. This happens because at the first time we run the demo the game must load all textures to video memory, fact that doesn’t happen from the second time we run the demo on. From the three results left, we consider as our official result the middle result, i.e., we discard the highest and the lowest values. Curiously almost all times the values obtained at the second round on were the same.
A very important detail that we must mention is that Doom 3 has an internal FPS lock: it is only capable of generating 60 frames per second, even if your board is able to produce more frames per second than that. This is done in order to make the game to have the same “playability” sensation independently from the video card installed on the PC. This lock, however, is disabled in the game benchmarking mode.
For further details on how to measure 3D performance with Doom 3, read our tutorial on this subject.
The results you check below. Keep in mind that models marked as “OC” are factory-overclocked. GeForce 7900 GT OC from XFX was running at 550 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.63 GHz (815 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7900 GT is 450 MHz/1.32 GHz (660 MHz DDR). GeForce 7950 GX2 OC from XFX was running at 570 MHz with its memory being accessed at 1.55 GHz (775 MHz DDR) while the standard clock configuration for a GeForce 7950 GX2 is 500 MHz/1.2 GHz (600 MHz DDR).

[nextpage title=”Far Cry”]
Far Cry is a game based on the new Shader 3.0 (DirectX 9.0c) programming model available on series 6 and 7 from NVIDIA and series X1000 from ATI graphics chips. We’ve updated the game to version 1.3.
As we’ve done on other programs, we ran this game at three resolutions, 1024x768x32, 1280x1024x32 and 1600x1200x32. This game allows several image quality levels and we’ve done our benchmarking on two levels, low and very high. To measure the performance we used the demo created by German magazine PC Games Hardware (PCGH), available at https://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/farcry-pcgh-vga.php. We run this demo four times and made an arithmetical average with the results. This average is the result presented in our graphs.
This game has a very important detail in its image quality configuration. Antialising, instead of being configured by numbers (1x, 2x, 4x or 6x) is configured as low, medium or high. The problem is that on NVIDIA chips both medium and high mean 4x, while on ATI chips medium means 2x and high means 6x, making the comparison between ATI and NVIDIA chips completely unfair. Because of that we configured antialising at 4x and anisotropic filtering at 8x manually at the video driver control panel.
For further details on how to measure 3D performance with Far Cry, read our tutorial on this subject.

[nextpage title=”Conclusions”]
As we’ve already stated in our GeForce 7900 GT review, GeForce 7900 GT is the perfect product for users wanting a high-end performance but not willing to give an arm to buy a high-end VGA like GeForce 7900 GTX or GeForce 7950 GX2. So we were very excited about this overclocked model from XFX, as Radeon X1900 GT gave GeForce 7900 GT a hard time on 3DMark05, making it difficult to say which card is the best.
We expected more from XFX GeForce 7900 GT 550M XTREME 256 MB with VIVO (PV-T71G-UCP7). Running at 550 MHz against 450 MHz on the standard GeForce 7900 GT wasn’t enough for making this video card faster than Radeon X1900 GT on 3DMark05. In all scenarios but one they achieve the same performance level. This exception was on 1600×1200 with image quality settings enable, where ATI’s product was 23.89% faster. This was really frustrating! Compared to the standard GeForce 7900 GT, the reviewed model was between 5% and 13% faster.
On the other hand, on 3DMark03, which simulates Shader 2.0 games, the overclocked GeForce 7900 GT from XFX was between 27% and 35% faster than Radeon X1900 GT, and 12% and 20% faster than standard GeForce 7900 GT.
At Doom 3 the reviewed video card achieved the same performance of the standard GeForce 7900 GT, being a little bit faster at 1600×1200 (around 7% faster). Here it was between 3% and 29% faster than Radeon X1900 GT, depending on the configuration.
And finally at Far Cry the overclocked GeForce 7900 GT from XFX achieved the same performance level of the standard GeForce 7900 GT, except at 1600×1200 with image quality settings enabled, where it was 17% faster. Radeon X1900 GT was, however, between 7% and 10% faster, but at 1600×1200 enabling image quality settings the overclocked GeForce 7900 GT from XFX was 15% faster.
The main problem we see with this video card is that it is virtually impossible to find it around. The only online store we’ve seen selling it was ZipZoomFly, and it was in back order there, quoted at USD 350 – Radeon X1900 GT’s official price.
You can find the standard GeForce 7900 GT also from XFX being sold at USD 270 in several on-line stores. Right, the standard model does not have video capture function. But you can find the standard GeForce 7900 GT model with VIVO at USD 290. Radeon X1900 GT can be found being sold at USD 300 – and it also has video capture function.
Since the overclocking carried by this particular model from XFX can be easily set with a standard GeForce 7900 GT – as it doesn’t have any special component compared to the standard model (like a memory with a higher speed grade, for instance) – we think buying this video card isn’t worthwhile.
In summary: First, this video card is hard to find; Second, it is quoted USD 60 more than a standard GeForce 7900 GT with VIVO function; Third, even though it was faster than standard GeForce 7900 GT, it would need a smaller price difference to make it attractive; Forth, you can set the same overclocking level with a standard GeForce 7900 GT.
You need a high-end card with video capture costing up to USD 300, we would recommend standard GeForce 7900 GT or Radeon X1900 GT, depending on the kind of game you play most.
