Zone Bit Recording
Hard disk drives use a technique called zone bit recording (ZBR) where the outter cylinders have more sectors than the inner cylinders, due to the obvious difference in available physical space. When a hard disk drive is reported as having 63 sectors per track this is not true, since, as we explained, the number of sectors per track vary depending on the location of the track.
