Single In Line Memory Module - 72 pins

SIMM-72 is a 32-bit memory module using 72 terminals. It normally uses FPM (Fast Page Mode) or EDO (Extended Data Out) memory chips. EDO chips offer a higher performance than FPM ones.

Since it is a 32-bit module, it must be installed like the following:

  • 486 and 5x86: One in one.
  • Pentium, equivalents (K5, K6, etc) and higher: Two in two, since the CPU accesses memory at 64 bits.

SIMM-72 modules were gradually replaced by DIMM memory modules, which are 64-bit modules.
