Single In Line Memory Module
SIMM is a type of memory module. Memory modules are board containing memory chips soldered on. Before memory modules were invented, the user had to manually install memory chips on the motherboard, what cause countless problems, such as bent terminals, off-the-socket terminals, inverted chips, etc. Memory modules were created to solve these issues.
SIMM memory modules were the first to have large market acceptance. There are two SIMM module types: SIMM-30, which is an 8-bit module and has 30 terminals, and SIMM-72, which is a 32-bit module and has 72 terminals.
SIMM modules evolved to the memory module types we have nowadays, like DIMM, DDR-DIMM and RIMM.
