Programmed Input/Output or Processor I/O

PIO is the name given when the system CPU is used to transfer data between the hard disk drive and the RAM memory. On a technique called bus mastering the hard disk drive transfers data directly to the RAM memory, without using the system CPU, thus increasing the system performance.
