Digital Micromirror Display
Type of panel used by HDTV (High Definition Television) and videoprojects. It is necessary the use of three DMD panels per device, one for each basic video color (red, green and blue).
A microcontrolled micromirror, which can reflect or not the projected light depending on its angle, creates each pixel.
The main drawback of this technology is its price for building panels over 720p resolutions (1280 x 720 pixels). Since for each pixel one micromirror is necessary, increasing the resolution means more micromirrors will be needed, increasing the manufacturing costs.
This technology is also known as MEM (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems).
