All Pentium 4 Models

Introduction

Intel Pentium 4 Processor was released in November 2000, using Intel’s seventh x86 microarchitecture, called Netburst. Pentium 4 processors can be found in three different core versions: Willamette, Northwood and Prescott. In this tutorial we will talk about each core version and list all Pentium 4 models released to date.

The first Pentium 4 models used socket 423 pinout, which had 423 pins as the name implies. Later Pentium 4 models with 478 pins were released (socket 478), where, in spite of having more terminals, were smaller than socket 423 models. The latest Pentium 4 processors use a new pinout, called socket LGA775.

Willamette

The first Pentium 4 models were based on Willamette core, which had 256 KB L2 cache, worked externally at 400 MHz (100 MHz transferring four data per clock cycle), SSE2 instructions support, 0.18 m manufacturing process and 42 million transistors, using an area of 217 mm2. The metal alloy used on the transistor interconnections was aluminum.

Northwood

After Williamette came Northwood core. This core is around 60% smaller than Williamette core because of its 0.13 µm manufacturing process. Northwood core can be found using 512 KB or 2 MB L2 cache, external bus running at 400 MHz, 533 MHz or 800 MHz (100 MHz, 133 MHz or 200 MHz transferring four data per clock cycle, respectively), SS2 instructions support and built with 55 million transistors, using an area of 131 mm2. The metal alloy used on the transistor interconnections is copper.

Copper is a better conductor than aluminum and it is softer, allowing the construction of smaller connections between the transistors.

Prescott core is manufactured under 90-nanometer (0,09 µm or 90 nm) technology and is used on modern Pentium 4 processors. It can be found with 512 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB of L2 cache, it works externally at 533 MHz or 800 MHz (133 MHz and 200 MHz transferring four data per clock cycle, respectively), support to the new SSE3 instructions and built with 125 million transistors, using an area of 112 mm2. The metal alloy used on the transistor interconnections is copper.

Pentium 4 Extreme Edition

Pentium 4 Extreme Edition was released on november 2003 and was the first desktop CPU to carry an integrated L3 memory cache. This processor has 2 MB of L3 memory cache accessed under the CPU internal clock. The first Pentium 4 Extreme Edition Models were based on the Gallatin core, which had 512 KB of L2 memory cache and 2 MB of L3 memory cache, ran externally at 800 MHz or 1,066 MHz (200 MHz or 266 MHz transferring four data per clock cycle, respectively), SSE2 instruction set, 64-bit extensions, Hyper-Threading technology, 0.13 m manufacturing process and 178 million transistors. Pentium 4 Extreme Edition models available today are based on Prescott 2M core, which is manufactured using 90 nm process. Below you can compare Prescott core (used by regular Pentium 4 processors) with Prescott 2M core (used by Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors).

While Prescott core has 125 million transistors, Prescott 2M core has 169 million. This difference goes to the 2 MB L2 memory cache that exists on Prescott 2M.

So far Intel has released only one Pentium 4 Extreme Edition based on Prescott 2M core. This processor has2MB L2 memory cache,SSE3 instruction set, Hyper-Threading technology and 64-bit extensions.
