Intel announces PRO/Wireless WiMAX chip

Intel has announced the availability of its first WiMAX chip, the PRO/Wireless 5116, providing equipment manufacturers and carriers a new option to deliver next-generation wireless broadband networks. According to the company, equipments for homes and offices such as modems and gateways based on the 5116 will cost around USD 200, instead of the current average of USD 500. WiMAX (802.16) allows transfer rates of up to 70 Mbps. The system-on-a-chip PRO/Wireless 5116, previously known as Rosendale, includes 802.16 MAC and OFDM PHY, an integrated Ethernet 10/100 MAC, inline security processing and TDM controller interface for streaming applications.
