Hitachi Announces 7 mm-thick Hard Drives

Hitachi has announced the launch of Z series of 2.5” hard drives, which have a single platter measuring 7 mm of thickness, 2.5 mm less than standard notebook hard drives. These new disks are available in 160 GB, 250 GB and 320 GB capacities, and have SATA-300 interface. The new Hitachi Z-Series family includes: Travelstar Z7K320 (7,200 rpm, 16 MB buffer), Travelstar Z5K320 and CinemaStar Z5K320 (5,400 rpm, 8 MB buffer). The first two are targeted to notebooks, while the last one is designed for A/V streaming devices and video surveillance systems. Hitachi will start volume shipments of the Travelstar Z5K320 family in July, while volume shipments of the Travelstar Z7K320 and the CinemaStar Z5K320 drive families will begin in August.
