Hitachi announced that it will be able to store 230 Gb per square inch in small HDs using perpendicular recording as opposed to traditional horizontal recording. This would allow 1-inch drives with capacities of up to 20 GB. Last December, Toshiba said it planned to launch a 1.8-inch 40 GB drive using perpendicular technology until March. Other companies working on this method include Maxtor and Seagate.
