Samsung will ship the world's first laptops with embedded MIMO-enhanced Wi-Fi technology based on Airgo's True MIMO chipset. The X20 machines will be compatible with 802.11a/b/g. MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) improves WLAN speed by using multiple antennas to transmit multiple streams of data over a single 20 MHz channel. Connection speeds can theoretically reach 108 Mb/s. There is no information yet on X20’s availability.

Atheros has announced what it claims are the first complete single-chip IEEE 802.11a/g (AR5006EX) and 802.11g (AR5006EG) WLAN solutions with support for PCI Express. The parts integrate an entire WLAN solution-media access controller (MAC), baseband processor and a high-performance 2.4/5-GHz radio or 2.4-GHz radio in a low-cost digital CMOS design. The AR5006EX and AR5006EG enable the entire WLAN solution to fit on a single-sided mini card or ExpressCard. The chips are expected to reach volume production in the third quarter.
