NEC router bridges WLAN and 3G
Author: Rodrigo Chia Date: July 20, 2005 - 5:55 AM PST
Category: LAN
More Info: http://www.nec.co.jp/press/en/0507/1501.html
LAN NEC has developed a mobile router that enables seamless broadband communication from high-speed vehicles such as train and cars through the employment of wireless LAN and 3G networks. In practice, this would allow a person inside a car to connect a notebook to both WLAN access points and 3G base stations when travelling at up to 124 miles per hour. NEC said though that actual products using the technology will not be available for a few years.

Intel develop CMOS Wi-Fi standard
Author: Rodrigo Chia Date: June 20, 2005 - 5:43 AM PST
Category: LAN
More Info: http://www.intel.com/netcomms/products/index.htm
LAN Intel announced it has developed a prototype of an all-CMOS direct conversion dual-band radio transceiver capable of supporting Wi-Fi standards from the 802.11a to the upcoming 802.11n. The piece contains an integrated power amplifier, but does not integrate all its elements into a single die. It uses a specific packaging to interconnect the CMOS tranceiver die with separate low noise amplifiers and the 5 GHz power one. The company believes this approach will help mantain manufacturing costs and prices low.

Single-chip PCI-E WLAN solutions from Atheros
Author: Rodrigo Chia Date: April 26, 2005 - 6:19 AM PST
Category: LAN
More Info: http://www.atheros.com/news/AR5006EX.html
LAN Atheros has announced what it claims are the first complete single-chip IEEE 802.11a/g (AR5006EX) and 802.11g (AR5006EG) WLAN solutions with support for PCI Express. The parts integrate an entire WLAN solution-media access controller (MAC), baseband processor and a high-performance 2.4/5-GHz radio or 2.4-GHz radio in a low-cost digital CMOS design. The AR5006EX and AR5006EG enable the entire WLAN solution to fit on a single-sided mini card or ExpressCard. The chips are expected to reach volume production in the third quarter.
