Corsair has expanded its Nova SSD series with the launch of 32 GB and 256 GB models. These new 2.5” drives have 64 MB of cache, SATA-300 interface, supports TRIM (a feature present on Windows 7 that optimize SSD drive performance) and the 256 GB model provides read and write speeds of up to 250 MB/s and 195 MB/s, respectively, while the 32 GB model provides read and write speeds of up to 195 MB/s and 75 MB/s, respectively. No word on pricing.

Toshiba Intros Hard Disks for Automotive Use

Toshiba has introduced a hard disk drive series targeted to automotive applications, such as entertainment, navigation and telemetry. Two models were announced: 200 GB (MK2060GSC) and 100 GB (MK1060GSC). Both are 2.5” disks, have SATA-300 interface, present a 12 ms access time, have a single-platter design, work at 4,200 rpm, produce a maximum noise level of 23 dB and can work at an operating temperature range from -30º C to 85º C (-22º F to 185º F). These disks were made to work in altitudes ranging from -1,000 feet to 18,500 feet (-300 m to 5,650 m) and are shock- and vibration-resistant. No word on pricing and availability.

Patriot Launches Zephyr SSD Series

Patriot has launched Zephyr series of 2.5” SSD drives. Available in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB capacities, these new Patriot SSD units feature SATA-300 interface, make use of a JMicron JMF612 controller and provide read speed of up to 240 MB/s and write speed of up to 80 MB/s (64 GB model), 145 MB/s (128 GB model) or 180 MB/s (256 GB model). No word on pricing and availability.

Seagate Launches Disk with Paramount Movies

Seagate, in partnership with Paramount Digital Entertainment, has launched FreeAgent Go portable hard disk drive (500 GB, 2.5”) that comes pre-loaded with 21 movies (all protected with DRM). As everybody knows there is no “free lunch”, from these 21 movies only one is for free, Star Trek 2009. To watch the other 20 movies you have to buy a license key that costs between USD 9.99 and USD 14.99. Below you can see a list of the movies included in FreeAgent Go hard disk drive.

New Super Talent SSD Series

Super Talent has just brought to the market VSDD 2.5” solid state drive series. Comprised with 8 GB (FTM8GL25V), 16 GB (FTM16GL25V), 32 GB (FTM32GL25V) and 64 GB (FTM64GL25V) models, these new SSD units from Super Talent feature SATA-300 interface, make use of NAND flash memory chips and provide read and write speeds of up to 150 MB/s and 100 MB/s, respectively (90 MB/s and 30 MB/s on 8 GB and 16 GB models. Prices range from about USD 65 for the 8 GB model to around USD 175 for the 64 GB model.

New VelociRaptor Hard Disks from Western Digital

Western Digital has expanded its VelociRaptor hard disk drive line-up with the launch of 450 GB and 600 GB models. These new disks have SATA-600 interface, 32 MB of cache, work at 10,000 rpm and are available in 2.5” and 3.5” (installed in a case called IcePack that acts as a heatsink) versions. 3.5” models of 450 GB and 600 GB with IcePack are priced at USD 299 and USD 329, respectively. 2.5” models will reach the market soon.

Intel has just officially launched 40 GB X25-V SSD drive. It is a 2.5” unit that features MLC memory chips and has SATA-300 interface and provides speeds of up to 170 MB/s and 35 MB/s, respectively. This SSD drive is priced at US$ 125 in 1,000-unit quantities.

OCZ has just announced the launch of 32 GB Onyx SSD unit. This is a 2.5” unit featuring MLC memory chips, an Indilinx Amigos controller, SATA-300 interface, 64 MB of cache and that provides read and write speeds of up to 125 MB/s and 70 MB/s, respectively. 32 GB Onyx SSD drive has a suggested price of USD 99.

Corsair has officially launched Force SSD drive. It is a 2.5” unit available in 100 GB and 200 GB capacities that features MLC memory chips, a SandForce SF-1200 controller, SATA-300 interface and presents read and write speeds of up to 285 MB/s and 275 MB/s, respectively. These units come with a 2.5”-to-3.5” adapter. No word on pricing and availability.

Corsair has announced today the launch of two 2.5” SSD series: Reactor and Nova. Reactor units are available in 60 GB and 120 GB capacities, are controlled by JMicron JMF612 chip, use MLC chips, have 128 MB DDR2 cache, SATA-300 and USB 2.0 connectivity and provide read and write speeds of up to 250 MB/s and 170 MB, respectively (60 GB model provides write speed of up to 110 MB/s). Nova units are available in 64 GB and 128 GB capacities, are controlled by Indilinx Barefoot chip, use MLC chips, have 64 MB cache, SATA-300 interface and provide read and write speeds of up to 270 MB/s and 195 MB/s, respectively. Seagate has expanded its storage offer with the launch of Constellation ES, a 3.5” hard disk, targeted to enterprise market, with 2 TB capacity based on SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 6.0 Gbps interface. Constellation ES spins at 7,200 rpm, has 16 MB of buffer and a dual processor system that allows the disk to achieve a maximum transfer rate of 150 MB/s. No word on pricing and availability.

Active Media has just launched Aviator-2 series of SSD units based on USB 3.0 connection. Available in 64 GB (USD 259.95) and 128 GB (USD 449.95) models, these new SSD drives from Active Media provide read and write speeds of 230 MB/s and 160 MB/s (120 MB/s on 128 GB model), respectively. The company also offers a case (USD 35) for 2.5” SSD units with USB 3.0 connectivity.
