Iomega has announced a new line of 1.8” external SSD drives that will come in 64 GB (USD 229), 128 GB (USD 399), and 256 GB (USD 749) flavors. The new drives feature USB 3.0 interface, make use of MLC chips, provide 256-bit hardware encryption, are resistant enough to withstand drops of up to 10 feet (3 m), and provide read and write speeds of up to 191 MB/s and 130 MB/s, respectively. Western Digital has expanded its offering of external hard drives with the launch of the following models: My Passport Essential, My Passport Essential SE, and My Book Essential. All of them feature USB 3.0 interface, which allows a transfer speed of up to 150 MB/s. The My Passport Essential model is available in 500 GB capacity and comes in five colors – black, silver, red, blue, or white. It costs USD 99.99. The My Passport Essential SE model is available in 750 GB (USD 129.99) and 1 TB (USD 169.99) capacities and comes in black, silver, metallic blue, or metallic red . Patriot has launched two new HDD/SSD enclosures, the Convoy 425S and Convoy 425XL. Both feature aluminum housing and two 40 mm fans, take up one 5.25” bay in the computer case and can hold up to four 2.5” HDD/SSD drives. The Convoy 425XL model also supports RAID (0,1,3,5,10 and JBOD) configurations. No word on pricing.

Mushkin has expanded its Callisto deluxe series of SSD drives with the launch of a 40 GB model to the current lineup, which already includes 60 GB, 120 GB, and 240 GB drives. SanDisk has announced the development of an SSD drive smaller than a postage stamp. The product measures 16 x 20 x 1.85 mm (0.63 x 0.79 x 0.07 inches), weighs less than one gram, and is available in capacities ranging from 4 GB to 64 GB, providing read and write speeds of up to 160 MB/s and 100 MB/s, respectively. It was designed for use in mobile computing platforms such as tablet PCs and ultra-thin notebooks. Its price has not been disclosed, because it depends upon the quantity ordered.  click to enlarge

Toshiba has announced the launch of two new families of 7,200 rpm, 2.5” SATA hard drives: MKxx61GSY and MKxx61GSYB. Members of the MKxx61GSY family are available in 160 GB, 250 GB, 320 GB, 500 GB, and 640 GB capacities, have a SATA-300 interface, 16 MB buffer, seek time of 12 ms, and maximum noise level of 26 dBA, and are targeted to the notebook market. The MKxx61GSYB family includes models of 80 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB, and 500 GB with a SATA-300 interface, 16 MB buffer, seek time of 10.5 ms, and a maximum noise level of 26 dBA, and are targeted to the networking market (routers, switches, servers, etc). Toshiba has started shipping the MKxx61GSY models, with volume production scheduled in the third quarter of 2010. Apricon has expanded its USB 2.0 external hard disk series with the launch of the 640 GB model. The main feature of these disks is the biometric identification system based on fingerprint reading.
