Sony Debuts DVDirect DVD Recorder

Sony debuted its next-generation multi-function DVDirect DVD recorder, which can quickly transfer high-definition home videos and digital photos to DVD discs without using a computer.

The new VRD-MC5 model can now transfer AVCHD quality videos to DVD discs in their native 1080i HD resolution when connected directly to a Sony hard drive or Memory Stick Handycam camcorder. The DVD can be played back on compatible Blu-ray Disc devices.

The model includes Digital Video (i.LINK/FireWire/IEEE-1394), S-Video, Composite Video inputs, and USB. In addition, the VRD-MC5 can directly record digital photos to a DVD as a slideshow or just for photo storage from any of the five popular digital camera memory cards. It sports slots for Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick Pro Duo media, Compact Flash, Secure Digital (SD/SDHC), and xD-picture card.

It comes with a built-in 2.5-inch color LCD screen and features automatic DVD menu and title creation.

VRD-MC5 will be available in August for about USD 230.

LG Intros First 6x Blu-Ray Burner

LG announces the first 6x Blu-Ray Burner. The GGW-H20N is the successor of the currently available GGW-H10N Super-multi Blue Blu-Ray /HD DVD combo drive. The new model can write 6x BD-R, 16x DVD+/-R, 40x CD-R and read 3x HD-DVD ROM.It also can burn BD-R DL (50GB) at 4x, which means that you will be able to write approximately 46 GB of data in less than 50 minutes. The drive will be available in the third quarter of the year.

Mitsubishi Ships HD DVD-R DL

Mitsubishi announced the release of the first dual-layer HD DVD-R media, which offers 30 GB of capacity. It can be recorded at 1x. The discs will be launched first on the japanese market by the end of the month at US$ 33 aproximately.

SanDisk Announces MicroSDHC with 6 GB and 8 GB

SanDisk has announced that increased the storage capacity for its MicroSDHC line: now it is available in 6 GB and 8 GB. With 8 GB, it is possible to store up to 2,000 digital songs or five hours of MPEG4 video. Both cards are rated at SD Speed Class 4 (writes at 4MB/sec).

Seagate Ships 1 TB Barracuda 7000 series

Seagate will begin shortly shipping in volume its first 1 TB Barracuda 7000 series, for desktops (Barracuda 7200.11) and enterprises (Barracuda ES.2). They deliver a 105MB/s sustained transfer rate, as well as a low power rating of 8 watts at idle. They also feature 7,200-rpm spin speeds, average seek times of 8.5ms and caches up to 32MB. Seagate's newest hard drives pack 1TB of data on four discs. The 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 will cost USD 399.99.

Samsung Begins Mass Producing 1.8" 64 GB SSD

After introduces 32GB SSDs into ultra-mobile personal computers, Samsung has begun mass producing 1.8-inch solid state drives (SSD) at 64 GB - the highest density SSD available today for notebooks, says manufacturer.

The read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD have been increased by 20% and 60% respectively over the 32 GB flash-SSD Samsung introduced last year.

In comparison with a 80 GB HD, which reads data at 15 MB/s and writes at 7 MB/s, the new SSD reads at 64 MB/s and writes at 45 MB/s. It weights 15g and 80 GB hd weights 61g. It also has less power comsumption.

The Korean company used the 51nm process technology. Company expects that sales of SSD units will increase at a 270 percent between now and 2010 to become the largest growth segment in the NAND flash industry.

Samsung Announces 1 TB HD

Samsung announced its one terabyte F1 Series hard disk drive, which features the world's highest recording density in a 3.5" hard disk drive using only 3 disks, says manufacturer.

NoiseGuard and SilentSeek technologies guarantees quiet operation and less vibration emanating from the drive.

The F1 Series drive features a 334 GB per-platter capacity, a 7200RPM spin speed, a 32MB cache, and up to a 1.2 million hour MTBF. It features a SATA 3Gb/s interface . Suggested price: US$ 399.

Toshiba announced the world's first slim re-writable HD-DVD drive for notebook PCs. The SD-L912A drive wirtes HD-DVD-R SL at 2x; HD-DVD-R DL at 1x; HD-DVD-RW SL at 1x; HD-DVD-RW DL at 1x; DVD-RAM at 3x; DVD-R SL at 4x; DVD-R DL at 2x; DVD-RW at 4x; DVD+R SL at 4x; DVD+R DL at 2.4x; DVD+RW at 4x; CD-R at 16x; CD-RW at 4x; High Speed CD-RW at 10x and Ultra Speed CD-RW at 10x.


Single and double layer HD DVD discs are already available and offer capacities of 15 GB and 30 GB respectively.  Triple layer HD DVD ROM discs that will offer capacities up to 51 GB are currently in development and will be available in late 2007.

Seagate started to ship industry's first 250GB-per-disc, 3.5-inch disc drive on the strength of second-generation perpendicular magnetic recording technology. The advantage of running a single platter in a drive comes down to lower power consumption, lower operating temperatures and less noise.
