Author: Cássio Lima
Date: April 22, 2013 - 8:35 AM PST |
Category: Storage
More Info: http://wd.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=10
Western Digital has just announced a new 3.5” SAS hard drive solution for legacy datacenter storage systems with the release of the WD XE, 2.5”, 10,000 rpm SAS hard drive, now available mounted in a 3.5” adapter. Shipping immediately, the WD XE hard drives provide best-in-class performance, low power consumption, and an easier upgrade path for existing 3.5” storage systems.
While demand for 3.5”, high-performance enterprise-class hard drives slows, a need remains for an alternate high-performance storage device as a transitional solution for legacy systems. WD XE hard drives offer best-in-class sequential performance and provide a compelling upgrade for datacenters migrating away from legacy drives nearing end-of-life.
“Delivering up to 50 percent higher capacity, similar or better maximum sequential performance, higher reliability and up to 67 percent lower power consumption versus 3.5”, 15,000 RPM drives, the new WD XE drives are the answer for data center server and storage solutions needing a transition strategy,” said Rich Rutledge, senior vice president of WD’s datacenters business unit. “IT managers now have a worry-free migration path to the latest enterprise performance drives from WD, while preserving their chassis and solution investments.”
The WD XE SAS enterprise hard drives in 3.5” adapters, shipping in capacities ranging from 300 GB to 900 GB, (models: WD3001HKHG, WD6001HKHG, and WD9001HKHG); are available through select distributors and resellers. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the WD XE hard drives in performance adapters range from USD 229.99 to USD 599.99. WD XE drives are covered by a five-year limited warranty.

ADATA Intros Solid State Drives for Servers
Author: Cássio Lima

More Info: http://www.adata-group.com/index.php?action=product_feature&cid=3&...
Today, ADATA announced the launch of the enterprise grade SX1000L solid state drive (SSD). This is ADATA’s first offering specifically tailored towards server applications.
Taking advantage of its expertise in NAND flash memory technology, ADATA is emphasizing the reliability and performance of the SX1000L. It employs static wear-leveling technology to maximize device mean time between failures (MTBF) to 1,500,000 hours, providing the long-term dependability required by high density computing and heavy load server operations. Available in 2.5” standard SATA form factor, the SX1000L implements advanced controller technology to enhance read/write performance. Sequential read speeds reach 560 MB/s, and sequential write is as high as 340 MB/s, with IOPS of 73,000 and 45,000 (Maximum 4K random read and write, respectively).
The use of multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory combined with enhanced flash chip sorting allows for outstanding sustained performance, lower latency, and superior endurance. Enhanced power-loss data protection, easy monitoring of the drive quality through SMART command, and flexible (user-defined) over-provisioning adjustment, all set the SX1000L apart from many similar models currently available.
The long write endurance and the 5 year warranty of the SX1000L make it extremely suitable for read-centric servers such as web and VOD (Video on demand) servers. Notably, the ADATA SX1000L provides greater over-provisioning with higher efficient data compression than is often seen in general SSD controllers. Since in real-world applications most data is compressible, this means sustained performance, endurance, and reliability all gain significant improvement.
The SX1000L SSD will be available in capacities of 100 GB and 200 GB.
