Storage A-Data has introduced XPG 3.5" SSD HDD enclosure. Hard disk drive enclosures are cases for you to install a hard disk drive outside the computer, being a terrific way to carry a huge amount of data around, for backing up data, for storing and carrying files from home to the office and vice-versa, for storing and carrying videos, etc. A-Data XPG 3.5” SSD can hold either one 3.5” SATA drives or two 2.5” SSDs. It also works as a hard driver converter, turning up to two 2.5" SATA SSDs into a 3.5" SATA drive. The product has been designed for both internal (using a 3 ½” internal bay) or external purpose and comes with two 2.5" SATA II SSDs with capacities from 32GBx2 up to 384GBx2. No word on pricing and availability.

Western Digital Launches 2 TB 3.5-inch Hard Drive

Western Digital has just launched the industry's first 2 TB 3.5-inch hard drive. This baby (model WD20EADS), features four 500 GB platters, 32 MB of buffer, a SATA-300 interface and is part of the Caviar Green family. This product costs USD 299.

Disaster-Proof External Hard Drives from ioSafe

Storage ioSafe will unveil later this month a USB external hard disk drive line-up that the company claims to be waterproof and fireproof. Named Solo, hard disk drives from this series will be available in 500 GB, 1 TB and 1,5 TB capacities. According to the manufacturer Solo hard drives are able to withstand fires rated up to 1,550° F (815ºC ) and can also be submersed in fresh or salt water for 3 days at a depth down to 10 feet (3 m). With three-year warranty, the 500 GB, 1 TB and 1.5 TB ioSafe Solo hard drives will reach the market later this month costing USD 200, USD 250 and USD 350, respectively.

CES 2009: Wintec Launches SSD Drives with USB Port

Wintec, a well-known memory module OEM, has created a division called FileMate to sell products to the retail market. Within these products we can find SolidGO SSD Drive series. These SSDs drives have an interesting embedded feature: all of them have a USB 2.0 port so you can you use them as a portable external hard drive. SolidGO SSD Drive series is comprised of four products:

  • SATA SSD: 2.5” SATA II SSD drive available in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB capacities.
  • ExpressCard 34 SSD: ExpressCard 34 SSD drive targeted to laptops available in 32 GB and 64 GB capacities.
  • ExpressCard 34 Ultra SSD: ExpressCard 34 SSD drive targeted to laptops available in 24 GB and 48 GB capacities. It is faster than abovementioned drive because it has 8 GB for using as a cache (internally these drive are 32 GB and 64 GB, respectively).
  • Card SSD Drive: SSD drive available in 32 GB and 64 GB and besides having a USB port it also has an eSATA port, which is faster than USB.

Kingston Launches 32 GB DataTraveler Flash Memory

Storage Kingston has just increased its USB flash memory line-up with the launch of a 32 GB model, the largest capacity within Kingston’s DataTraveler family. This new product measures 3.06" x 0.9" x 0.47" (77.9 mm x 22 mm x 12.05 mm), is compatible with Windows Vista (Windows ReadyBoost not supported), Windows XP (SP1, SP2), Windows 2000 (SP4), Mac OS X v.10.3.x and higher, Linux v.2.6.x and higher operating systems, and its MSRP is of USD 139.

Imation Announces WUSB External Hard Disk

Storage Imation has announced the launch of Apollo Pro WX external hard drive compatible with WUSB technology. The goal of wireless USB (WUSB) is to connect peripherals such as printers, external hard disk drives, sound cards, media players and even video monitors to the PC wirelessly. Wireless USB works on the UWB frequency range (Ultra Wide Band, from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz), while Bluetooth technology works on 2.4 GHz frequency, the same used by IEEE 802.11 wireless networks (Wi-Fi) and its maximum theoretical transfer rate is the same as USB 2.0: 480 Mbps (60 MB/s) if the device is within 3 meters (9.84 feet) from the PC or 110 Mbps (13.75 MB/s) if the device is within 10 meters (32.8 feet) from the PC. Apollo Pro WX will reach the market in Q4 2008 in capacities ranging from 250 GB to 1.5 TB. No word on pricing.

Western Digital has increased its My Passport portable hard drives line-up with the launch of 400 GB and 500 GB models. These drives are available in several colors, have USB 2.0 interface and weight 6.35 oz (180 g). My Passport 400 and 500 GB drives are priced at US$ 179.99 and US$ 219.99, respectively. With this launch Western Digital My Passport portable drives are now available in the following capacities: 160 GB, 250 GB, 320 GB, 400 GB and 500 GB.
