As you might know, the new Intel Z68 chipset features a technology called Smart Response that copies your most commonly used applications from your hard disk drive to your SSD in order to speed up system boot and/or applications startup.

To take advantage of this technology, you need three components: a motherboard with support to Smart Response, an SSD drive (64 GB max), and a hard disk drive.

Although Smart Response Technology supports any SSD drive (up to 64 GB of capacity), Intel has developed a brand new SSD drive specifically for use as a cache with Z68 platforms. This is the Intel SSD 311 Series (codenamed Larson Creek).

The SSD 311 is available in 20 GB capacity, features 34-nm SLC memory chips, a 2.5-inch or mSATA form factor, SATA-300 interface, and provides maximum read and write speeds of up to 200 MB/s and 105 MB/s, respectively. It is priced at USD 110.

Seagate Unveils Hard Drives with 1 TB per Platter

Storage

Seagate has announced the first 3.5-inch hard drive featuring 1 TB of storage capacity per disk (platter). It means that from now on, we will have on the market high-capacity hard drives with fewer platters and heads. With fewer components, hard drives’ prices tend to drop (at least we hope so).

Just to put things into perspective, the Seagate 3 TB Barracuda XT hard drive features five 600 GB platters (488 Gigabits per square inch) and 10 heads. With 1 TB platters (625 Gigabits per square inch), Seagate can produce a 3 TB hard drive using only three platters and six heads.

The first products to utilize 1 TB platters will be launched within Seagate’s GoFlex Desk external hard drive series, but the company will also launch Barracuda XT models (in 1.5 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB capacities) with 1 TB platters in mid-2011.

About 10 years ago there were seven big players on the hard disk drive (HDD) business: Seagate, Samsung, Western Digital, Hitachi, Quantum, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. But things have changed a lot during this time.

In 2001, Maxtor bought Quantum’s HDD division. In 2005, Seagate bought Maxtor’s HDD division. In 2009, Toshiba bought Fujitsu’s HDD division. Early this year, Western Digital bought Hitachi’s HDD division, and this week Seagate announced the acquisition of Samsung’s HDD division for about USD 1.375 billion (50% cash / 50% stock).

So from now on, there will be only three big players on the hard disk drive market: Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba.
