Samsung Launches 1 TB Spinpoint M8 Hard Drive
Author: Cássio Lima Date: June 9, 2011 - 7:37 AM PST
Category: Storage
More Info: http://www.samsung.com
Storage

Samsung has launched the Spinpoint M8, a 2.5-inch internal hard drive that provides users with 1 TB of storage space. It is not the first 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive from Samsung. Last year, the company launched the Spinpoint MT2, a 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive that had three 333 GB platters and a height of 12.5 mm.

The new Spinpoint M8 is thinner than the Spinpoint MT2 (9.5 mm vs. 12.5 mm) because it uses two 500 GB platters. It has SATA-300 interface, 8 MB of cache, and spins at 5,400 rpm.

The 1 TB Spinpoint M8 has a suggested price of USD 129.00.

Computex 2011: Promise Demos Thunderbold-based DAS Boxes

DAS (Direct Attached Storage) and NAS (Network Attached Storage) boxes are external storage devices, supporting RAID for higher performance and/or higher reliability. DAS boxes are connected to the computer using a dedicated communication channel, while NAS boxes are connected to computers using a network.

During this Computex, Promise was demonstrating two DAS boxes that use the latest Lightbolt technology, formerly known as Light Peak, a communication protocol that allows transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps, i.e., ten times faster than the Gigabit Ethernet connection and two times faster than USB 3.0.

The Pegasus R4 is a four-bay DAS box, and the Pegasus R6 is a six-bay DAS box. In the demo, Promise was playing simultaneously seven uncompressed 1080p videos stored in a Pegasus R6 box. The average transfer rate was around 850 MB/s, which is impressive.

At the moment, these boxes are targeted at Mac computers for video editing applications.

The SSD part of the device is managed by four SandForce SF-2200 controllers using a RAID 0 configuration and MLC chips. According to OCZ, this solution can deliver a maximum read transfer rate of 575 MB/s and a maximum write transfer rate of 500 MB/s. It will be available in capacities ranging from 240 GB to 960 GB. The only problem is the price. The MSRP in the US for the 240 GB version will be USD 699.
