Super Talent has launched TeraDrive CT series of 2.5” SSD drives. Available in 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB models, these new drives make use of a SandForce SF-1222 controller, have SATA-300 interface and provide read and write speeds of up to 285 MB/s and 275 MB/s, respectively. According to Super Talent 60 GB, 120 GB and 240 GB TeraDrive CT drives are priced at USD 199, USD 340 and USD 669, respectively.

Western Digital has launched My Book Studio LX external hard drive, specially designed for Mac users. Available in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities, these new drives feature FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 interfaces, aluminum case, WD SmartWare backup utility and 256-bit hardware-based encryption. The 1 TB and 2 TB My Book Studio LX drives are backed by a three-year warranty and cost USD 200 and USD 270, respectively.

| Hitachi Announces 7 mm-thick Hard Drives |

Hitachi has announced the launch of Z series of 2.5” hard drives, which have a single platter measuring 7 mm of thickness, 2.5 mm less than standard notebook hard drives. These new disks are available in 160 GB, 250 GB and 320 GB capacities, and have SATA-300 interface. The new Hitachi Z-Series family includes: Travelstar Z7K320 (7,200 rpm, 16 MB buffer), Travelstar Z5K320 and CinemaStar Z5K320 (5,400 rpm, 8 MB buffer). The first two are targeted to notebooks, while the last one is designed for A/V streaming devices and video surveillance systems. Hitachi will start volume shipments of the Travelstar Z5K320 family in July, while volume shipments of the Travelstar Z7K320 and the CinemaStar Z5K320 drive families will begin in August.

Seagate has just launched Momentus XT, an HD/SSD hybrid drive that combines the low cost of hard disk drives with the high performance of SSD units. This disk features a smart technology that actively monitors the frequently-used applications and data files and stores them in the SSD for quick access. The product is available in 250 GB, 320 GB and 500 GB capacities, has SATA-300 interface, 32 MB cache, spins at 7,200 rpm and has 4 GB SLC flash memory. Momentus XT 500 GB, 320 GB and 250 GB models are priced at USD 156, USD 132 and USD 113, respectively. Note: Two years ago Seagate tried to launch a similar product, but it failed because the caching control was made by Windows Vista. In this new model the control is made by an internal controller.

Just like other Force members, these new drives feature SATA-300 interface, make use of a SandForce SF-1200 controller and provide read and write speeds of 285 MB/s and 275 MB/s, respectively. The 60 GB, 120G B and 240 GB Force SSDs will reach the market next month. No word on pricing.
