Iomega has announced a new line of 1.8” external SSD drives that will come in 64 GB (USD 229), 128 GB (USD 399), and 256 GB (USD 749) flavors. The new drives feature USB 3.0 interface, make use of MLC chips, provide 256-bit hardware encryption, are resistant enough to withstand drops of up to 10 feet (3 m), and provide read and write speeds of up to 191 MB/s and 130 MB/s, respectively. Iomega’s SSD drives will be available worldwide in early November.

Lexar Media has announced the launch of the Crucial RealSSD C300 series of 1.8” SSD drives. Coming in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB capacities, these new drives feature MLC memory chips, SATA-600 interface, and provide a maximum read speed of 355 MB/s. The write speed varies according to the model: 55 MB/s (64 GB model), 140 MB/s (128 GB model), and 215 MB/s (256 GB model). They come with a suggested price of USD 149.99 (64 GB model), USD 299.99 (128 GB model), and USD 599.99 (256 GB model).

Western Digital has expanded its offering of external hard drives with the launch of the following models: My Passport Essential, My Passport Essential SE, and My Book Essential. All of them feature USB 3.0 interface, which allows a transfer speed of up to 150 MB/s. The My Passport Essential model is available in 500 GB capacity and comes in five colors – black, silver, red, blue, or white. It costs USD 99.99. The My Passport Essential SE model is available in 750 GB (USD 129.99) and 1 TB (USD 169.99) capacities and comes in black, silver, metallic blue, or metallic red . Last but not least, the My Book Essential model is available in 1 TB, 1.5 TB, 2 TB, and 3 TB capacities, and its pricing range from USD 129.99 to USD 249.99.

Patriot has launched two new HDD/SSD enclosures, the Convoy 425S and Convoy 425XL. Both feature aluminum housing and two 40 mm fans, take up one 5.25” bay in the computer case and can hold up to four 2.5” HDD/SSD drives. The Convoy 425XL model also supports RAID (0,1,3,5,10 and JBOD) configurations. No word on pricing.

OCZ has launched the Onyx 2 family of solid state drives, which is comprised with 120 GB and 240 GB models. These new drives come in a 2.5” form factor, feature MLC memory chips, SATA-300 interface, a SandForce SF-1200 controller, and provide a maximum read and write speeds of 275 MB/s and 265 MB/s, respectively. The Onyx 2 models have a suggested price of USD 190 (120 GB) and USD 440 (240 GB).

Mushkin has expanded its Callisto deluxe series of SSD drives with the launch of a 40 GB model to the current lineup, which already includes 60 GB, 120 GB, and 240 GB drives. The Callisto deluxe SSD drives have SATA-300 interface, make use of a SandForce SF-1200 controller and provide read and write speeds of up to 285 MB/s and 275 MB/s, respectively. Mushkin didn’t say for how much this new model will reach the market.

SanDisk has announced the development of an SSD drive smaller than a postage stamp. The product measures 16 x 20 x 1.85 mm (0.63 x 0.79 x 0.07 inches), weighs less than one gram, and is available in capacities ranging from 4 GB to 64 GB, providing read and write speeds of up to 160 MB/s and 100 MB/s, respectively. It was designed for use in mobile computing platforms such as tablet PCs and ultra-thin notebooks. Its price has not been disclosed, because it depends upon the quantity ordered.

Super Talent has introduced the UltraDrive MX series of 2.5” SSD drives. Available in 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB, and 480 GB capacities, these new Super Talent SSD units make use of MLC flash memory chips, have SATA-300 and mini-USB interfaces, and are controlled by a JMicron 616 chip, providing read and write speeds of up to 250 MB/s and 180 MB/s, respectively. The UltraDrive MX drives will begin shipping on September 1st. Information on pricing has not been provided.
