HP ships co-branded iPod Shuffle

HP added two iPod Shuffles to its co-branded lineup of music players. Both sync with the PC through a USB 2.0 cap and promise up to 12 hours of battery life. The players are identical to Apple’s models measuring 3.3 inches long and weighing 0.78 oz. The 512 MB model is selling for USD 99.99 while the 1 GB one runs for USD 129.99.

Philips plans system for USD 20 phone

Philips Electronics this week launched an initiative to develop a GSM cellphone costing under USD 20. The company intends to sample, by the end of the year, a system priced at under USD 5 called Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5130, which integrates all the electronics needed for a mobile phone. It should drive the cost of GSM handsets well under the current USD 40 limit.

Memory maker TwinMOS unveiled its new Sushi MMD101 MP3 player. The device weighs only 25 g and measures 53 x 28 x 20 mm. It supports MP3, WMA and WAV files and is equipped with 5 EQ options. The USB 2.0 Sushi works on one AAA battery, promising up to eight hours of continuous playing, and is available in 128 MB, 256 MB and 512 capacities.

Samsung prepares QWERTY cell phones

Samsung will launch two cell phones in the third quarter featuring full QWERTY keyboards and 1.3 megapixel digital cameras. The SGH-D550 is a GSM/GPRS handset with a 262,144-color TFT LCD and support for MP3 and AAC playback as well as for the BlackBerry e-mail technology. The number pad is converted into a keyboard when the phone is turned to its side. The SPH-7000 runs on a XScale processor and supports CDMA2000-1x. It sports a 65,636-color TFT LCD and is compatible with 802.11b wireless networks. The keyboard is revealed when the sliding LCD screen is moved aside.

NEC unveils new HQV plasma displays

Japanese NEC unveiled a new line of plasma displays featuring its TheaterSync video processing technology. Developed in partnership with Silicon Optix, it promises to get HD quality images out of common sources such as cable TV, DVD and even VHS. The TheaterSync tech, based on the HQV standard, will appear on plasma displays ranging from 42 to 61 inches. Prices will start at USD 1,995.

PalmOne released its first handheld equipped with a hard drive. With the LifeDrive, the company tries to offer an alternative to such high profile gadgets suchs as the iPod, while keeping the digital organizer format. Sony reveals the PlayStation 3

After Microsoft and Nintendo unveiled details about their new consoles Xbox 360 and Revolution, last week, Sony released some interesting info about the PlayStation 3 this Monday. As previously known, the PS3 will be based on a PowerPC-based Cell processor clocked at 3.2 GHz and, according to the company, will achieve system performance of 2.18 teraflops – twice that of the Xbox 360. It includes 512 KB of on-die L2 cache and seven AltiVec vector processing units. Graphics are provided by a chip from Nvidia called RSX, which is connected directly to the CPU, running at 550 MHz. The PS3 is expected to ship next Spring.

HP releases Gwen Stefani designed cam

HP released a limited edition of its Photosmart R607 digital cam designed by singer Gwen Stefani. It is styled in turquoise and white and displays hearts and Japanese kanji and katakana characters. The camera comes with an accessory package including carrying case and charm also designed by Gwen, a wrist strap and a DVD featuring video, interview and wallpapers. The R607 is a 4.1 megapixels camera, with 21x total zoom (3x optical, 7x digital), capable of high resolution prints up to 11x17 inches. The limited edition costs USD 249 compared to USD 199 of the standard one.

Xbox 360 details unveiled

Gamers could finally take a look at some features from the long-awaited Xbox 360 on MTV this Thursday. The console will be based on a PowerPC processor with three 3.2 GHz cores and floating point performance of 1 teraflop. An ATI GPU derived from the upcoming R520 with 512 MB of GDDR3 will provide the graphic power to the machine. The system will bring a 20 GB HD, DVD drive, slots for Flash memory and USB 2.0 ports. A vast lineup of game developers has already announced titles for the Xbox 360, which should arrive in stores by Christmas. Pricing was not revealed.

Microsoft will launch Xbox 2 on MTV

Microsoft will reveal details about the long awaited Xbox 2 on a 30-minute special to be aired on MTV on May 12 (9:30 PM ET). The show will also be broadcast in Europe, Asia and Australia on May 13. The public expects to get more information about the video game such as release dates, processor specifications and whether it will include a hard drive. Most analysts believe the next generation Xbox, which is expected to reach stores in the second half of this year before its rival PlaySation 3, will cost around USD 299.
