Albatron stole a march on AMD by announcing its first socket AM2 motherboard before the official release of the chips. The KM51PV-AM2 is based on the somewhat old GeForce 6150 chipset, launched about eight months ago, featuring GeForce 6200-like integrated graphics. It sports basically the same specs as the socket-939 KM51PV: up to 4 GB of memory (DDR2), Serial ATA 3 Gb/s, RAID 0, 1, 5 and 0+1, Ethernet 10/100 with Active Armor and VGA, DVI and HDTV-Out connectors.

Gigabyte Readies Core Duo Viiv Mobo

Gigabyte will start shipping later this month a 945G Express motherboard aimed at socket 775 Core Duo processors. The Viiv-compliant GA-8I945GMMFY-RH promises to further reduce power consumption by as much as 28%. The card integrates Graphics Media Accelerator 950 video. Intel’s Viiv concept boasts low power consumption, quiet operation and expanded multimedia capability. Full specs are:

  • 1,066 MHz FSB

  • 2x DIMM sockets (2 GB max.)
  • 1x Ultra DMA 100 port
  • 4x Serial ATA II ports

ATI Announces Turion 64 X2 Chipset

ATI has announced a new mobile chipset aimed at AMD’s recently released Turion 64 X2 lineup. The Radeon Xpress 1100 series features support for DDR2-667 memory, 1 GHz Hyper-Transport bus, seven PCI slots, four PCI Express x1 slots, two PATA and four SATA ports, eight USB ports and eight-channel audio (AC’97). Video is provided by an integrated Radeon X1300 graphics chip compatible with DirectX 9, but not with Shader Model 3.0. The GPU is clocked at 300 MHz in the 1100 model and at 400 MHz in the 1150. ATI has said that the Vista-ready chipset will be sported in notebooks from Fujitsu, Gateway and HP, among others.

Radeon Xpress 200 Chipset Renamed

ATI has officially changed the name of its Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire chipset to CrossFire Xpress 1600. The purpose is solely to relate the product to the recently launched CrossFire 3200 (RD580). The main difference between the two chipsets is the number of lanes available for the PCI Express graphics slots (16 or 32).

VIA Readies Single-Chip C7 Chipset

VIA will start shipping later this quarter a C7 and Eden chipset integrating the north and south bridges in a single chip. Developed for the embedded market, the CX700 is 34% smaller than a traditional two-chip solution, saving motherboard space. It supports 533 MHz FSB, 4 GB of DDR400 or DDR2-533 memory, Serial ATA 3 Gb/s, AGP 8x, six USB ports and four PCI slots. The chipset also includes VIA’s UniChrome Pro graphics core.

MSI announces nForce4 SLI XE mobo

MSI today announced its first socket 775 motherboard based on Nvidia’s nForce4 SLI XE, which supports x16 bandwidth, but only x8 when operating with two graphics cards. The P4N SLI XE offers 1066 MHz FSB, four DIMM sockets for up to 4 GB of DDR2-667 memory, four Serial ATA 3 Gb/s ports, eight-channel HD audio and Gigabit LAN. The board also includes CoreCell tuning technology and a Communication PCI slot that can be used to connect MSI’s proprietary dual-band network card interface.

ASUS unveils Viiv-compliant board

ASUS today unveiled a socket-479 motherboard, aimed at Core Duo processors, compliant with Intel’s Viiv platform and certified by Dolby. The N4L-VM DH, based on an i945GM chipset, promises low power consumption and quiet cooling while still supporting most home entertainment activities. ASUS also offers an add-in card (R-DVI-ADD2) to bring DVI output to the board. Graphics are supplied by Intel’s on-board GMA 950.

VIA Releases EPIA EN15000 Motherboard Based On C7 CPU

VIA has just released a new model of their EPIA small form factor motherboard based on VIA’s C7 CPU, EPIA EN15000. This is the first EPIA motherboard to feature this processor. Another EPIA model with the same specs but using VIA Eden CPU was also released. Here are the main specs:

  • EPIA EN SeriesVIA C7 1.5 GHz CPU (EN15000) or VIA Eden 1.2 GHz CPU (EN12000E).
  • Chipset: VIA CN700 north bridge and VIA VT8237R south bridge.
  • Parallel IDE ports: Two ATA-133 ports.

nVidia to Demonstrate new nForce 500 Series During CeBit

During CeBit tradeshow, currently in progress in Hannover, Germany, nVidia will demonstrate their new nForce 500 family, which includes:

  • nForce 590 SLI MCP for the enthusiast, dual GPU segment;
  • nForce 570 SLI MCP for the performance, dual GPU segment;
  • nForce 570 MCP for the single GPU performance segment;
  • nForce 550 MCP for the mainstream segment.

These chipsets are expected to arrive on the market by mid-2006.

Sapphire Releases two CrossFire Xpress 3200 Motherboards

Sapphire released two socket 939 motherboards based on the new CrossFire Xpress 3200 from ATI: PC-A9RD580 and PC-A9RD580ADV. Both have two x16 PCI Express slots compatible with ATI’s CrossFire technology, four DDR400 sockets (4 GB max.), two ATA-133 ports, four Serial ATA ports, 8-channel audio, eight USB 2.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet. PC-A9RD580 has one x1 PCI Express slot, one PCI slot, two SATA-300 ports and two Firewire (IEEE1394) ports, while PC-A9RD580ADV has two x1 PCI Express slots, two PCI slots, four SATA-300 ports and two LAN ports (one Gigabit and one 10/100).

PC-A9RD580 is targeted to overclockers (it brings several overclocking options) and its PCB is white, while PC-A9RD580ADV is targeted to mainstream users, using a standard brown PCB.

ATI Launches CrossFire Xpress 3200

ATI released today their new chipset for AMD platform, CrossFire Xpress 3200 (formerly known by its codename, RD580), supporting two x16 PCI Express slots for CrossFire dual-VGA configuration. This is a single-chip chipset and has all features found on Xpress 200 CrossFire (a.k.a. RD480) plus support for 8-channel audio, two Gigabit Ethernet, eight SATA-300 ports and two Firewire (IEEE1394) ports.

ATI launch partners on CrossFire Xpress 3200 include ABIT (AT8 32X), ASUS (A8R32-MVP DELUXE), DFI (LANPARTY UT CFX320-DR), PCPartner (RD580AK9-A75D) and Sapphire (PC-A9RD580Adv).

ATI to Make Their Own South Bridge Chips

With nVidia completing its acquisition of chipset manufacturer ULi, ATI is believed to start manufacturing their own south bridge chips instead of using ULi/nVidia ones. nVidia is expected to change the name of ULi chipsets to nVidia brand pretty soon.

VIA today announced its P4M890 chipset aimed at mainstream Intel systems. It is equipped with UniChrome Pro on-board video supporting 1080p HDTV output. Nvidia adds two nForce4s for Intel chips

Nvidia has expanded its lineup of chipsets aimed at Intel processors. The new nForce4 SLI XE and nForce4 Ultra are mainstream and low-end products that should allow makers to offer socket 775 mobos ranging from USD 90 to USD 100. The XE supports SLI mode, but limited to two x8 slots, while the Ultra offers a single x16 connector. Other features include 1066 MHz frontside bus, dual channel DDR2-667 memory, up to four Serial ATA 3 Gb/s ports, four ATA-133 ports, ten USB 2.0 ports, 8-channel audio and native Gigabit Ethernet. In comparison to the nForce4 SLI and SLI x16, however, the XE and Ultra lack hardware accelerated firewall.

Gigabyte unveils Viiv-compliant mobo

Gigabyte today unveiled its first motherboard compliant with Intel’s Viiv platform. Based on the i945G Express chipset, the GA-8I945GMH (with GMA 950 on-board graphics) was developed for “low profile entertainment devices that merge with the living room environment”, according to the manufacturer. It offers 8-channel surround audio and Gigabit connectivity through Intel’s PRO/1000 PL. The mobo, aimed at Pentium D processors, bundles Norton Security and includes proprietary Shieldware features.
