Gigabyte has just brought out to the market a motherboard based on Intel X58 chipset featuring a 24-phase voltage regulator, seven PCI Express x16 slots (four working at x16 and three working at x8), six DDR3 sockets (DDR3-2200+ through overclock), two SATA-600 ports, ten SATA-300 ports, three Firewire ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports and 8-channel audio (Realtek ALC889). This monster is called GA-X58A-UD9 and also comes with several others features including solid caps, 2 oz (56 g) copper tracks (which is the double of the thickness usually used on motherboards), active phase controller (“Dynamic Energy Saver 2”), DualBIOS, power, reset and CMOS on-board buttons, recharging capability to iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and waterblock installed on northbridge chip. MSI has expanded its Big Bang line-up with the launch of a model based on Intel X58 chipset. This board supports Intel Core i7 processors (socket 1366), features six DDR3 sockets (24 GB max; up to 2,133 MHz under overcloking, according to the manufacturer), six PCI Express x16 slots, one PCI Express x1 slot, one eSATA port, six SATA-300 ports, six SATA-600 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, nine USB 2.0 ports, one Firewire port, two Gigabit Ethernet ports and 7.1 audio (a PCI Express x1 card featuring optical and coaxial SPDIF outputs). It makes use of only top-notch components including solid caps and ferrite chokes, and comes with several features like Winki, 16-phase DrMOS voltage regulator circuit, APS (Active Phase Switching) and OC Genie, probes for monitoring CPU, memory and chipset voltages with a multimeter and two 8-pins power connector to provide more power to the CPU. AMD has officially launched 890GX chipset, which brings native support to SATA-600 ports (six) and to the upcoming Phenom II X6 processor (codename Thuban). 890GX chipset works together with the new SB850 south bridge chip, features a DirectX 10.1 (Radeon HD 4290) graphics engine, a PCI Express 2.0 x16 lane that can be split-up into two x8 lanes if necessary and SidePort feature, which is an optional memory chip soldered on the motherboard in order to increase performance. Several manufacturers have already launched models based on this newest AMD chipset, as you can see below. ASUS has announced a motherboard line-up featuring ASUS Protect 3.0 technology, which according to the manufacturer lowers the generation and transmission of electromagnetic radiation by up to 50%. This technology also reduces system-wide power consumption by up to 80.23% (motherboard can save up to 33kw of electricity annually, reducing the release of CO2 into the atmosphere by 20.7kg). MSI launched today P55-GD85 motherboard. This socket 1156 motherboard is based on Intel P55 chipset, has four DDR3 sockets supporting up to DDR3-2133 through overclocking (16 GB max), two PCI Express x16 slots supporting SLI and CrossFire configurations, two PCI Express x1 slots, two PCI slots, one IDE port, two SATA-600 ports, seven SATA-300 ports, one eSATA port, two USB 3.0 ports, six USB 2.0 ports, one Firewire port, two Gigabit Ethernet ports and 7.1 audio. P55-GD85 also supports several features like an automatic overclocking chip (OC Genie), a cooling solution based on an 8-mm heat-pipe (usually motherboards use 5-mm heat-pipes), a voltage regulator with a different design called “DrMOS” (click here to find out how it works), APS (Active Phase Switching) feature to save energy and on-board power and reset buttons. Biostar has presented two new overclocking features for their products: Game Boost – GT60 and BIO-unlocKING. With Game Boost – GT60 it is possible to increase integrated graphics controller (GPU) clock on the newest 32-nm Intel processors (codename Clarkdale). This feature is available on BIOSTAR H55 motherboard series and, according to the manufacturer, allows the user to increase integrated GPU clock up to 60%. BIO-unlocKING enables ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) function on selected AMD processors, allowing you to unlock extra CPU cores through BIOS setup. Biostar didn’t inform which motherboards support this feature.
