| ASRock Unveils Motherboards with PCI Express 3.0 Slots |
| Author: Cássio Lima |
Date: July 15, 2011 - 6:15 AM PST |
| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.asrock.com/news/index.asp?cat=News&ID=222 |
ASRock has just launched new motherboards with models featuring PCI Express 3.0 slots. This series is comprised of five models: Z68 Extreme7 Gen3, Z68 Extreme4 Gen3, Z68 Extreme3 Gen3, P67 Extreme4 Gen3, and Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3. All of them support Intel LGA1155 processors. The main feature of the PCI Express 3.0 is the new 1 GB/s bandwidth per lane, in each direction, for a total of 2 GB/s per lane (each lane has two directions). The original PCI Express specification supported 250 MB/s per lane, and the PCI Express 2.0 supports 500 MB/s per lane. This means that a PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot provides a maximum transfer rate of 32 GB/s (2 GB/s x 16), whereas a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot can reach up to 8 GB/s. However, to explore the full potential of the new PCI Express 3.0 connection, there are three prerequisites that must be met. First, since currently the PCI Express x16 slots are controlled by the CPU, you must have a CPU with an embedded PCI Express 3.0 controller. The problem is that they’re not available yet. The first Intel CPU with this feature will be the upcoming “Ivy Bridge,” due in 2012. Second, the motherboard must use PCI Express 3.0 channel switch chips. (The abovementioned ASRock motherboards feature this chip.) Third, the video card must be compatible with the PCI Express 3.0 standard, and so far, there are no video cards based on this standard yet. So, ASRock is paving the way for PCI Express 3.0 support, as the benefits of the PCI Express 3.0 cannot be achieved today, since it depends on other components not yet available on the market. In the table below, we’ve listed the main specifications for these new motherboards from ASRock. Model | Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 | Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 | Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 | P67 Extreme4 Gen3 | Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 | Form Factor | ATX | ATX | ATX | ATX | ATX | Chipset | Intel Z68 | Intel Z68 | Intel Z68 | Intel P67 | Intel Z68 | Memory | Four DDR3-2133 sockets | Four DDR3-2133 sockets | Four DDR3-2133 sockets | Four DDR3-2133 sockets | Four DDR3-2133 sockets | PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots | One | Two | Two | Two | Two | PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots | Four | One | - | One | One | PCI Express 2.0 x1 slots | One | Two | Two | Two | Two | PCI slot | One | Two | Two | Two | Two | SATA-600 | Six (RAID 0,1,5,10) | Four ports (RAID 0,1,5,10) | Two ports (RAID 0,1,5,10) | Four ports (RAID 0,1,5,10) | Six (RAID 0,1,5,10) | USB 3.0 | Six | Four | Two | Four | Six | Audio | 7.1 (Realtek ALC892) | 7.1 (Realtek ALC892) | 7.1 (Realtek ALC892) | 7.1 (Realtek ALC892) | 7.1 (Realtek ALC892) | LAN | Two Gigabit Ethernet ports | One Gigabit Ethernet port | One Gigabit Ethernet port | One Gigabit Ethernet port | One Gigabit Ethernet port |

| MSI Announces Motherboard with PCI Express 3.0 Slots |
| Author: Cássio Lima |
Date: July 4, 2011 - 9:29 AM PST |
| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.msi.com |
After ASRock, now it’s time for MSI to launch their first motherboard with PCI Express 3.0 slots, the MSI Z68A-GD80 (G3). The main thing about the PCI Express 3.0 is that it can provide a bandwidth of 1 GB/s in one direction (2 GB/s per lane; each lane has two directions). The original PCI Express specification supported 250 MB/s per lane, and PCI Express 2.0 supported 500 MB/s per lane. This means that a PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot provides a maximum transfer rate of 32 GB/s (2 GB/s x 16), whereas a PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot can reach up to 8 GB/s. Bear in mind that you need a PCI Express 3.0 video card to achieve the bandwidth of PCI Express 3.0 slots. The MSI Z68A-GD80 (G3) is an LGA1155 socket motherboard based on the Intel Z68 chipset. It features two PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots, one PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot, two PCI Express 2.0 x1 slots, two PCI standard slots, four DDR3 memory sockets, four USB 3.0 ports, four SATA-600 ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, 7.1 channel audio, and DVI and HDMI video outputs. MSI’s motherboard also supports Virtu and Intel Smart Response technologies, and uses military-class components, such as Hi-c capacitors and solid ferrite-core coils, also known as SFC, Super Ferrite Choke, which, according to MSI, can provide up to a 20% improvement in efficiency. As the main motherboard manufacturers, Gigabyte has also launched their first motherboards for the upcoming desktop APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) manufactured in 32 nm technology from AMD. These new APUs will be part of the AMD A-Series (codename Llano) and will feature a new socket, dubbed FM1. Seven models were announced, as you can see below: All models feature solid capacitors, ferrite chokes, low RDS(on) MOSFET transistors, two BIOS chips, and a high-end audio codec (Realtek ALC889). All USB ports have fuses to prevent you from burning your motherboard if somehow the ground and VCC pins from the USB ports are reversed, touch each other, or the USB ports get a really high static discharge.
