Contrary to Gigabyte, that launched a brand new line-up of AM3+ motherboards, MSI has updated some of their current AM3 motherboards to support the upcoming AMD’s 32nm CPUs (based on the Bulldozer architecture) by upgrading the BIOS. Therefore, users can install an AMD AM3+ processor on an MSI AM3 motherboard without having to purchase a new one. The table below shows the first MSI motherboards to support AM3+ processors and their corresponding BIOS versions: Model | Chipset | BIOS Version | 890FXA-GD70 | AMD 890FX | A7640AMS.190 | 890FXA-GD65 | AMD 890FX | A7640AMS.I20 | 890GXM-G65 | AMD 890GX | A7642AMS.1A0 |

Gigabyte has announced a new line of motherboards designed for the upcoming AMD’s 32nm CPUs (based on the Bulldozer architecture). These CPUs require a new CPU socket, dubbed AM3+, which will be compatible with current socket 45nm AM3 processors. Socket AM3+ CPUs will not be compatible with socket AM3 motherboards unless there is a BIOS upgrade. The Gigabyte AM3+ “Black Socket” line-up is comprised of 16 models. All of them feature a black CPU socket, making it easy to locate for AM3+ support. On the table below you can see the “Black Socket” members. click to enlarge

| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.gigabyte.us/MicroSite/265/x58a-oc.html |
Gigabyte introduced what they are calling "the world's first motherboard designed by overclockers for overclockers". Which is kind of a suspicious affirmation, since both ABIT and DFI claimed the same at least eight years ago. In any case, the X58A-OC comes with a set of very high-end overclocking features, including a high-end 12-phase voltage regulator circuit, onboard buttons for tuning CPU clock, 2 oz (56 g) copper layers, seven four-pin fan connectors, and two BIOS chips, allowing users to select one BIOS for normal use, and another one for overclocking supporting up to 16 different profiles. It uses only top-notch components. Based on the Intel X58 chipset and supporting Intel 1366 socket CPUs, the X58A-OC motherboard features four PCI Express x16 slots, one slot PCI, six DDR3 memory sockets, six SATA-300 ports, two SATA-600 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and one Gigabit Ethernet port. Gigabyte did not say when this board will be launched. click to enlarge

| MSI Unleashes Big Bang Marshal (B3) Motherboard |
| Author: Cássio Lima |
Date: February 24, 2011 - 5:32 AM PST |
| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.msi.com/news-media/news/1191.html |
MSI has officially launched their newest Big Bang motherboard, the Big Bang Marshall (B3), a product based on the fixed version of the Intel P67 chipset (B3 Stepping chipset). This motherboard is a must-have for the high-end enthusiast. It comes with no less than eight PCI Express 2.0 slots (2x16, 2x8, 4x1), four DDR3 memory sockets (32 GB max of up to DDR3-2133 through overclocking), four SATA-600 ports, four SATA-300 ports, 12 USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two eSATA ports, one Firewire port, and two Gigabit Ethernet ports. The Big Bang Marshall (B3) uses a cooling solution based on an 8-mm heat-pipe that, according to MSI, is to date the thickest heatpipe used on a motherboard (usually motherboards use five-mm heat-pipes), which translates in a better cooling capability (56% improvement, according to the manufacturer). It comes with a high-end regulator circuit with 24-phases and military-grade components. All electrolytic capacitors used on the voltage regulator circuit are SMD (surface mount device), also known as highly-conductive polymerized or simply Hi-c, and solid ferrite chokes, which MSI is promoting as “icy chokes” or “super ferrite chokes”. According to MSI these chokes work 20º C cooler than traditional chokes. Capacitors used outside the voltage regulator circuit are solid. Like other motherboards from MSI, it has a function called “OC Genie”. When this button is pressed, the motherboard automatically overclocks the system (it must be pressed when the computer is turned off). MSI Big Bang Marshall (B3) features voltage monitoring points, where the extreme overclocker can install a multimeter to manually monitor the CPU, memory and chipset voltages. It also comes with an overclocking panel called OC Dashboard. This dashboard is connected to the motherboard using two cables: a proprietary connection and a USB connection. Besides being able to control voltages and clocks, this panel can also monitor the CPU temperature and fan speed. Like other motherboards from MSI, this product comes with an operating system stored inside the motherboard read-only memory that allows you to access the Internet without needing to load the operating system or even without having a hard disk drive installed. This feature is called Winki 3. MIS did not reveal Big Bang Marshall (B3)’s pricing. click to enlarge

| Intel Confirms Problem with 6 Series Chipsets |
| Author: Cássio Lima |
Date: February 2, 2011 - 10:53 AM PST |
| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/blog/2011/01/31/int... |
Intel has halted the production of 6 series chipsets (H67 and P67, codename Cougar Point) due to a problem that can affect significantly the performance of the four SATA-300 controlled by these chipsets. The problem, however, do not affect the two SATA-600 ports. Intel has already fixed the problem and will come back to production of the 6 series chipsets by the end of this month. Users who have already bought a motherboard based on the H67 or P67 chipset should contact the vendor to proceed with replacement. This recall should cost USD 1 billion to Intel.
