| Computex 2012: ASUS Concept Motherboard with Two GPUs |
| Author: Gabriel Torres |
Date: June 13, 2012 - 9:18 AM PST |
| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.asus.com |
During this Computex, ASUS showcased a concept motherboard called “X79 Zeus,” featuring two on-board GPUs. This motherboard is not intended for production (at least not yet), but rather to show off what ASUS’s engineers can do. Other features include two Thunderbold ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, 10 SATA-600 ports with hardware-based RAID, 12 USB 3.0 ports, WiFi IEEE 802.11b/g/n, and eight memory sockets supporting up to 128 GB. The motherboard doesn’t have expansion slots, as the area normally occupied by them was used to install the two GPUs and the necessary memory chips. ASUS didn’t say which GPUs were used. click to enlarge

| Computex 2012: Upcoming Motherboards from ASRock |
| Author: Gabriel Torres |
Date: June 11, 2012 - 10:49 AM PST |
| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.asrock.com |
ASRock displayed two of its upcoming motherboards, one for the LGA1155 platform and one for the LGA2011 platform. The Z77 OC Formula will come with a cold plate for liquid cooling solutions pre-installed on the motherboard. It will have two PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots, one PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot, 10 USB 3.0 ports, 12 USB 2.0 ports, six SATA-600 ports, four SATA-300 ports, on-board audio based on the high-end Realtek ALC898 codec, one Gigabit Ethernet port, voltage monitoring points, and two LED displays. It will support memories up to DDR3-3000. Another highlight of this motherboard is the use of an eight-layer printed circuit board. (Motherboards usually use a six- or four-layer PCB.) As you can assume by its name, this is an LGA1155 motherboard based on the Intel Z77 chipset. This motherboard is still under development, and its physical aspect may still change. click to enlarge
The X79 Extreme11 will be an exceedingly high-end motherboard for the LGA2011 platform, based on the Intel X79 chipset, with seven PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots. All slots are PCI Express 3.0 and operate at high bandwidth configurations because of the presence of two PLX PEX8747 chips. This motherboard will have a Creative Core3D[l1] audio controller, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, eight USB 3.0 ports, 14 USB 2.0 ports, two SATA-600 ports controlled by the chipset, eight SAS/SATA-600 ports controlled by an LSI SAS2308 chip, two eSATA-600 ports, four SATA-300 ports, two FireWire ports, eight memory sockets, and a POST diagnostics display. click to enlarge

| Category: Motherboard |
| More Info: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/z... |
Intel officially releases the 7-series chipsets for the “Ivy Bridge” processors (third-generation Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors), despite the processors not being available yet. The new Intel 7-series chipset family includes native support for USB 3.0 ports, and two new technologies: Smart Connect (allowing the computer to receive emails and refresh webpages while it is in sleep mode) and Rapid Start (faster boot times). They also support the Virtu Universal MVP, which allows you to combine the performance of the integrated graphics processor available in the CPU with the performance of any video card installed. This is similar to what occurs with the Hybrid SLI and ATI Hybrid Graphics technologies, with the notable difference of not being limited to GPUs from a specific manufacturer. Intel’s 7-series chipsets do not support the PCI bus. In the table below, we summarize the key differences of the 7-series chipsets targeted to desktops. | Intel Z77 | Intel Z75 | Intel H77 | Supported CPUs | LGA1155 | LGA1155 | LGA1155 | Integrated Video | Yes | Yes | Yes | PCI Express 2.0 Lanes | 8 | 8 | 8 | USB 3.0 Ports | 4 | 4 | 4 | USB 2.0 Ports | 10 | 10 | 10 | SATA-600 Ports | 2 | 2 | 2 | SATA-300 Ports | 4 | 4 | 4 | RAID Support | 0, 1, 5, 10 | 0, 1, 5, 10 | 0, 1, 5, 10 | Video PCIe Configuration | 1 x 16 or 2 x 8 or 1 x 8 + 1 x 4 [l1] | 1 x16 or 2 x 8 | 1 x 16 |
