AMD introduced new desktop processors: the 45-watt AMD Athlon 64 single-core processors 3500+ and 3800+. AMD claims they can help consumers and businesses save energy and experience significant performance-per-watt benefits.
For those who looks for high performance, AMD has also introduced the Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6000+.
Pricing for the 65nm energy-efficient AMD Athlon 64 processors 3500+ and 3800+ are USD 88 and USD 93, respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities. Pricing for the new AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 6000+ is USD 464 in in 1,000-unit quantities.

AMD today announced availability of new AMD Opteron processor models in both highly efficient (68 watts) and mainstream (95 watt) thermal envelopes. The new models are 1218 HE, 2218 HE and 8218 HE and will cost, respectively, USD 430, USD 610 and USD 1,340. With at only 68 watts maximum thermal design power, they are ideal for customers looking to reduce power and cooling bills. They also feature AMD PowerNow! technology, which is designed for reduced system level energy consumption.
AMD has also unveiled the Opteron models 2220 and 8220 (2.8 GHz), available in the 95-watt maximum thermal design power. Suggested price: USD 700 abd USD 1,500, respectively.

IAdea Corporation, the Taiwan-based licensee of BitTorrent technology, and Star Semiconductor Corporation, an affiliate of the semiconductor giant UMC Group, jointly announce the availability of STR9810/20, a BitTorrent-optimized microprocessor chip.
The new microprocessor will enable consumer electronics hardware makers to create devices that directly download and play BitTorrent content. It will be available in March.
The companies unveils two versions of the chip with differents hardware-based acceleration levels. Both chips feature an ARM922-based core, network interface and dual USB 2.0 high-speed ports. The chips will be available starting at USD 8.75 in 1K quantities.

Intel has started shipping three new quad-core processors: Core 2 Quad Q6600, Xeon X3220 and X3210. The Q6600 runs at 2.40 GHz and has bus frequency of 1066 MHz. L2 cache size features 8 MB. It will be launched at USD 851 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities, but in the second quarter of the year the price will drop to USD 530.
The Xeon X3220 features core frequency of 2.40 GHz and bus frequency of 1066MHz. At the launch, it is priced at USD 851 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities, but it is expected to drop to USD 530 in the second quarter.
The Xeon X3210 is clocked at 2.13 Ghz, with bus frequency of 1066 MHz. Pricing USD 690 and USD 425 in the second quarter (per unit in 1,000 unit quantities).

Epson has developed an application processor, the S1C33E08, to portable devices, which offers a one-chip solution integrating functions required for electronic dictionaries, e-books, color LCD control circuit, USB 2.0 device connectivity, and other portable devices features. It also brings a MP3 hardware accelerator which features a decoder and a playback API offer high-speed processing for easy MP3 playback. The color LCD control circuit is compatible with both STN-type and TFT-type liquid crystal displays.
Shipment of samples will begin in December 2006, and volume production is scheduled to start in February 2007. Full-scale production is expected to be 1 million units per month.

AMD rolls out today the Quad FX platform, which puts four cores on a dual-socket for the first time. The new plataform is based on two Athlon 64 FX dual-core processors. ASUS L1N64-SLI WS will be one of the first motherboard to use the new plataform.
The new processor FX-70 has clock frequency of 2600 MHz, system bus tech of 2000 MHz and voltage of 1.35-1.40. Its maximum temperature is 55-63șC. The FX-72 has clock frequency of 2800 MHz, system bus tech of 2000 MHz and voltage of 1.35-1.40. Its maximum temperature is also 55-63șC. The FX-74 has clock frequency of 3000 MHz, system bus tech of 2000 MHz and voltage of 1.35-1.40. Its maximum temperature is 56șC. All of them use AMD’s socket F and are manufactured using a 90nm SOI process.
AMD is shipping the FX-74, FX-72 and FX-70 in pairs at USD 999, USD 799 and USD 599, respectively.

AMD rolls out a new Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processor for AM2 platforms, with 2.6GHz clock speed. It is very similar to the previous socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-60, but with the 2 x 1 MB L2 cache configuration for better performance in cache applications. On the other hand, FX-60 has a 2 x 512 KB L2 cache configuration. Price for distributors: USD 403 per 1,000.
Athlon 64 FX-62, which runs at 2.8 GHz clock speed and has a 2 x 1 MB L2 cache configuration, is still the most powerfull processor from Atlhon 64 family.

Introduced last month with its desktop counterparts, Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors for notebooks, formerly known as Merom, are now officially available. The five initial models are the T7200 (2 GHz), T7400 (2.16 GHz) and T7600 (2.33 GHz), with 4 MB of L2, and the T5500 (1.66 GHz) and T5600 (1.83 GHz), with 2 MB of L2. All five sport a 667 MHz frontside bus. Prices range from USD 209 to USD 637 in 1,000-unit quantities.
