AMD Launches Opteron “Barcelona”

AMD has just launched its first Opteron processor models based on the new K10 architecture. Nine models were launched with clock speeds ranging from 1.7 GHz to 2.0 GHz. All these new models are based on “Barcelona” core, have quad-core technology, 65 nm manufacturing process, 512 KB L2 memory cache per core, 2 MB L3 memory cache, HyperTransport 1.x and socket 1207 (socket F) platform. Intel Unveils New Xeon Processor Models

The new Xeon 7300 series (a.k.a Tigerton) is based on the Core microarchitecture and carrying quad-core technology. Six new Xeon processors were launched inside the 7300 series, as you can see on the table below. AMD "Barcelona" is Expected in the Next Few Days

The expected "Barcelona" is included in this 10ª generation (K10). "Barcelona", in fact, is an Opteron 65 nm quad-core  processor with 512KB of cache L2, 2 MB cache of L3 and incorporates new technologies, such as AMD Virtualization (AMD-V), Dual Dynamic Power Management (which allows the power requirements of each memory controller to be managed separately from the cores) and others technologies to save power. Intel Ships Off Core 2 Extreme Mobile X7900 CPU

Xeon X5365 is the industry's first 3.0 GHz quad-core processor to fit inside a standard 120 watt power envelope. It also features front-side bus (FSB) speed of 1333MHz. Xeon L5335 includes a 2.0 GHz clock speed and 1333MHz FSB within a 50 watt power envelope. These processors include new system-transparent energy smart technology that reduces idle power usage by up to 50 percent. X5365 will be available for USD 1,172 in 1,000 unit quantities, and L5335 will cost USD 380 also in 1,000 unit quantities. Intel Intros First Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile

Intel introduced its first Intel Core 2 Extreme mobile dual-core processor, for notebooks.  According to the company, this is "the world's highest-performing mobile processor". The company also introduced new desktop processors and said it expects to announce battery-friendly quad-core processors for laptop computers next year. The Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 mobile dual-core processor, with both cores running at 2.6 GHz, features mobile-specific power-saving features. For desktop PCs, Intel is announcing a set of new processors, including Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 quad-core processor, which is clocked at 3.0 GHz and features a 1333 MHz system bus speed. AMD Unleashes Phenom Processors

AMD announced its line of Phenom processors for desktops, which includes quad-core models, which is based on the "Barcelona" quad-core Opteron server chip technology. AMD Phenom X2 and X4 processors will offer true quad- and dual-core and boasts integrated DDR2 memory controller, HyperTransport technology links, and 128-bit Floating Point Units. According to AMD, its Phenom quad-core processor cores communicate on the die, rather than through an external front-side bus that joins two dual-core systems. In other words, AMD says 'our quad-core is better than the Intel's one'. They will be available in the end of this year.
