AMD has launched a new version of its quad-core desktop processor Phenom 9600. The Phenom 9600 "Black Edition" will sell for the same price as the normal Phenom 9600. According to AMD, the launch is a 'goal to have the most accessible quad-core processors on the market'. The 2.3GHz CPU has its clock multiplier unlocked, meaning a better overclocking capability, and tunable performance. The brand 'Phenom' replaces Athlon 64 as the top-of-line CPU from AMD.
AMD has launched another CPU under their “Black Edition” series, which is targeted to oveclocking enthusiasts. Athlon 64 X2 5000+ “Black Edition” is a dual-core processor working at 2.6 GHz, featuring dual-channel DDR2 memory controller, 1 MB L2 cache (512 KB per core), 65 W thermal design power and coming with its clock multiplier unlocked. Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition CPUs cost $136 in 1000-unit quantities (the regular Athlon 64 X2 5000+ costs $125 in 1000-unit quantities).
AMD has announced the addition of Phenom triple-core processor to its desktop roadmap, expected to be launched in Q1 2008. The new triple-core Phenom processors (code-name Toliman) will be based on K10 architecture and will feature HyperTransport 3.0, 512 KB of L2 cache per core and a shared L3 cache (value not disclaimed). It seems that triple-core Phenom processors are quad-core models with one disabled core.
AMD has just launched its first Opteron processor models based on the new K10 architecture. Nine models were launched with clock speeds ranging from 1.7 GHz to 2.0 GHz. All these new models are based on “Barcelona” core, have quad-core technology, 65 nm manufacturing process, 512 KB L2 memory cache per core, 2 MB L3 memory cache, HyperTransport 1.x and socket 1207 (socket F) platform. Below you can see the Opteron “Barcelona” models launched today.
Intel launched a new Xeon series allowing symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) up to 32 CPUs. The new Xeon 7300 series (a.k.a Tigerton) is based on the Core microarchitecture and carrying quad-core technology. Six new Xeon processors were launched inside the 7300 series, as you can see on the table below. All new quad-core Xeon 7300 models operate on a 1,066 MHz front-side bus featuring a new point-to-point bus architecture, which allows each processor to have its own connection directly to the chipset.
System integration expects AMD's K10 in the next few days. The expected "Barcelona" is included in this 10ª generation (K10). "Barcelona", in fact, is an Opteron 65 nm quad-core processor with 512KB of cache L2, 2 MB cache of L3 and incorporates new technologies, such as AMD Virtualization (AMD-V), Dual Dynamic Power Management (which allows the power requirements of each memory controller to be managed separately from the cores) and others technologies to save power. Being part of the new K10 series, the Opteron "Shangai" has dual-core and single-core model.
Intel unveils at the Games Convention in Germany its new high-end X7900 CPU for notebooks. It is a new processor for its "Core 2 Extreme" series and runs at 2.8 GHz. The new CPU also features a 4 MB L2 cache and 800 MHz FSB. The new CPU is manufactured with the 65nm process. It’s expected to appear in products from Asus, Dell and Medion within the next four weeks.
Intel launched two quad-core Intel Xeon processors: X5365 and L5335, with new virtualization capabilities. Xeon X5365 is the industry's first 3.0 GHz quad-core processor to fit inside a standard 120 watt power envelope. It also features front-side bus (FSB) speed of 1333MHz.
Xeon L5335 includes a 2.0 GHz clock speed and 1333MHz FSB within a 50 watt power envelope.
These processors include new system-transparent energy smart technology that reduces idle power usage by up to 50 percent.
X5365 will be available for USD 1,172 in 1,000 unit quantities, and L5335 will cost USD 380 also in 1,000 unit quantities.
Intel introduced its first Intel Core 2 Extreme mobile dual-core processor, for notebooks. According to the company, this is "the world's highest-performing mobile processor". The company also introduced new desktop processors and said it expects to announce battery-friendly quad-core processors for laptop computers next year.
The Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 mobile dual-core processor, with both cores running at 2.6 GHz, features mobile-specific power-saving features.
For desktop PCs, Intel is announcing a set of new processors, including Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 quad-core processor, which is clocked at 3.0 GHz and features a 1333 MHz system bus speed. It will be available for USD 999 a unit in 1,000 quantities.
AMD announces price cut for dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processors. Athlon 64 X2 6000+, the fastest dual-core from AMD, drops from USD 241-per-unit to USD 178. The lower-end 4000+ model fall from USD 89 to USD 73. AMD has also reducted prices for single-core Athlon 64 chips and Sempron line. Check AMD site for the complete price's list. The prices are valid in 1000-unit tray quantities.
