Intel Launches CPU Replacement Plan for Overclockers
Author: Cássio Lima Date: January 19, 2012 - 8:23 AM PST
Category: CPU
More Info: http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/
CPU

Overclocking is a technique that enables a given hardware part to operate at a clock frequency above its default frequency, thus increasing its performance. This technique is not recommended by the manufacturers and voids the product’s warranty.

Well, the good news for enthusiasts who like to overclock their processors is that Intel has launched a service called the “Performance Tuning Protection Plan.” This plan will provide certain out-of-warranty service offerings in the event of damage caused by overclocking or over-voltaging by the user. By purchasing this plan and meeting the plan’s criteria, the user can receive a one-time replacement processor if the user’s over-voltaging or overclocking causes the original processor to fail. This plan in no way expands, changes or extends the original three year standard warranty and is simply a plan the user may want to purchase for overclocking or over-voltaging.

The Performance Tuning Protection Plan covers the following chips:

  • Core i5-2500K: USD 20 (Plan price)
  • Core i7-2600K: USD 25
  • Core i7-2700K: USD 25
  • Core i7-3930K: USD 35
  • Core i7-3960X: USD 35

Intel has finally introduced their third-generation Atom processors, the 32 nm chips codenamed Cedar Trail.

The new Intel Atom processors offer a few significant advantages over current generation chips, including the aforementioned 32 nm process, a media engine that enables full 1080p high-definition playback of videos and Blu-Ray content, and an integrated memory controller supporting DDR3-800/1066 memory. These chips also support Intel Wireless Display, Intel Wireless Music, Rapid Start Technology and the Smart Connect Technology capabilities.

Four processors were launched, two for netbooks (Atom N2600 and N2800) and two for entry-level all-in-one desktops (Atom D2500 and D2700). The N2600 and N2800 are clocked at 1.60 GHz and 1.86 GHz, respectively, while the D2500 and D2700 are clocked at 1.83 GHz and 2.13 GHz, respectively. All these chips feature two cores.

Systems using the new Intel Atom “Cedar Trail” processor from Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Toshiba will debut in early 2012.

Intel Releases Core i7 ”Sandy Bridge-E“ Processors
Author: Cássio Lima Date: November 14, 2011 - 8:53 AM PST
Category: CPU
More Info: http://www.intel.com
CPU

Today, Intel released their Core i7-3000 series of processors, codenamed “Sandy Bridge-E.” Two models were launched, the Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition and the Core i7-3930K, with a third model (Core i7-3820) scheduled for 2012.

These new processors, along with the new Intel X79 chipset, constitute an entirely new platform, dubbed the LGA2011 platform. Sandy Bridge-E chips have the same instruction set as the Sandy Bridge chips. The difference between them lies in the memory controller. Sandy Bridge-E CPUs feature the new quad-channel memory architecture supporting DDR3 memories up to 1,600 MHz officially, while Sandy Bridge CPUs feature triple-channel memory architecture and support DDR3 memory up to 1,066 MHz.

The new LGA2011 CPUs have a total of 40 PCI Express lanes for video cards. This allows the following video card configurations:

  • Two video cards at x16 and one video card at x8
  • One video card at x16 and three video cards at x8
  • One video card at x16, two video cards at x8, and two video cards at x4

Intel has rolled out their first Atom CPUs manufactured in a 32 nm process (codename Cedarview) that will power entry-level desktops based on Intel’s Cedar Trail platform.

The new Atom processors are D2500 (two cores, 1.86 GHz) and D2700 (two cores, 2.13 GHz). Both feature 1 MB of L2 cache, a built-in DDR3-800/1066 memory controller, a DirectX 10.1 graphics engine running at 640 MHz (D2700) or 400 MHz (D2500), and a TDP of 10 W. These chips also provide support for HDMI, DisplayPort, 1080p video playback, and Intel Wireless Display, PC Synch and Fast Boot technologies.

The Atom D2700 supports Hyper-Threading technology and is priced at USD 52, while the Atom D2500 costs USD 42, in 1,000-unit quantities.

The portable (netbook) variants of this generation, the N2600 and N2800, are expected to arrive soon.
