Nikon has announced the launch of the world’s first compact digital camera featuring a built-in projector. Coolpix S1000pj has a resolution of 12.1 Mpixels and 28-mm 5x zoom NIKKOR lens. Thanks to its built-in 10 lumens projector users can see their favorite photos or movie clips on any flat surface at up to 40 inches in size, besides watching them on a 2.7” LCD display. Samsung has unveiled two new cameras to their S series. The 7 mega pixel S760 and the 8 mega pixel S860 features Intelligent Face Recognition Technology, whichdetects the subject’s face and automatically adjusts auto focus and auto exposure. Both models have 3 x optical zoom and a 2.4” LCD display, 11 scene modes and digital image stabilisation technology. They will be available in black, silver, pink or blue colours from January starting at US$ 169.

Fujifilm announces the new FinePix, a 12 Megapixel compact digital camera. It features ISO settings of up to ISO 6400. It also comes with 3.0x optical zoom and a 2.7" high-resolution 230,000 pixel wide angle view LCD, Dual Image Stabilization and Hyper Face Detection 2.0 Technology, which can detect up to 10 human faces in a scene in as little as 0.05 seconds - correcting focus, exposure, and white balance automatically, regardless of where subjects are located within the frame. Additional improvements in Face Detection 2.0 include a new Automatic Red-Eye Removal. The F50fd should be available in September at around USD 300.

Canon has launched two new PowerShot cameras: S5 IS and SD850 IS. The 8.0 Megapixel PowerShot S5 IS features 12x optical zoom, Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, professional-grade optics, Face Detection Technology (to improve focus) and an increased sensitivity range of ISO 80-1600. Other key advancements include a larger, higher resolution 2.5” vari-angle LCD, additional shooting modes and Red-Eye Correction in playback. It will be priced at USD 499 when it launches in early July. 
The 8.0 Megapixel Digital IXUS 950 IS comes equipped with a 4x optical zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer and the DIGIC III image processor, along with faster processing, advanced Noise Reduction and 18 Shooting modes. It will be available in June for USD 399.

Samsung this week launched a series of digital cameras (NV) with innovative design and new user interface. The flagship model, the NV7 OPS, measures 4.2x2.5x0.8 inches, with 7.2 megapixels and 7x optical zoom. The camera uses Optical Picture Stabilization (OPS) and Advanced Shake Reduction (ASR) to offer better image quality. The NV7 OPS also provides MPEG-4 VGA (640x480) 30 fps video recording. Suggested retail price is USD 450.

Kodak has added a new model to its EasyShare lineup, the P712, with 12x optical zoom and 0.07-second click-to-capture rate. It features Schneider Variogon lens with optical image stabilization, 7.1-megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch LCD and hot shoe flash connector. The P712 also offers 30 fps VGA video capture. The camera will sell for USD 500 with availability expected for July.

Casio will launch in June a new 10.1-megapixel model to its Exilim Zoom lineup of compact digital cameras. The EX-Z1000 packs a 2.8-inch ultra-bright wide LCD (maximum of 1,200 cd/m2), features a 3x optical zoom and includes an anti shake DSP built into the image processor. Casio claims the first shot can be taken 1.3 second after switching on and a time lag of only 0.002 second after the push of the shutter. Available in silver and black, the EX-Z1000 measures 3.62x2.3x0.88-inches, while weighing 4.9 oz. It uses MMC and SD cards and takes up to 360 shots on a single battery charge. Suggested retail price is USD 400.

Japanese Nikon has announced that it will stop manufacturing most of its film products to focus on digital cameras. The measure includes discontinuing production of all large format Nikkor lenses and enlarging lenses, several camera bodies, manual focus Nikkor interchangeable lenses and related accessories. Sales of these products, according to the company, will cease as supplies come to an end. Nikon will keep only two film cameras in its lineup: the F6 and the FM10. Film bodies represented only 3% of the US$ 1.5 billion sold by its camera and imaging division in the fiscal year ended in March 2005.

Ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), in Las Vegas, Kodak today introduced what it calls the world’s first dual-lens still camera. The pocket-sized Easyshare V570 wraps both a wide-angle (23 mm) and a 5x optical zoom (39-117 mm) lens into a black and silver frame less than an inch thick. The camera, equipped with a 2.5-inch LCD screen, also captures video at 30 frames per second using MPEG-4 compression. Suggested retail price is USD 400.
