Sony last week announced initial shipments of blank and rewritable 25 GB Blu-ray discs. It will start selling 50 GB media in June. Retail prices are identical to those previously advertised by TDK: USD 20 (BD-R 25 GB), USD 25 (BD-RE 25 GB), USD 48 (BD-R 50 GB) and USD 60 (BD-RE 50 GB). Sony promises extra reliability and durability thanks to its AccuCORE technology.

ATI Officially Releases Radeon X1900 GT

ATI today added a GT model to its Radeon X1900 high-end graphics card series. The new CrossFire-compatible product is clocked at 575 MHz with 256 MB of GDDR3 at 1.2 GHz. It has 12 pixel pipelines and 36 pixel shaders engines instead of the 16 and 48 present in the XT and XTX versions. Suggested retail price is USD 300.

EVGA has launched its Signature Series of graphics cards with a GeForce 7900 GT model. The product is overclocked to 600 MHz (core) and 1.6 GHz (memory). The special series, ”approved“ by company directors, offers priority phone and email support, eligibility for EVGA’s Step-Up upgrade program, a free game and lifetime warranty. The e-GeForce 7900 GT Signature packs 256 MB of GDDR3, copper fan and dual DVI-I and HDTV-7 connectors.

S3 Finally Releases MultiChrome Cards

S3 Graphics officially introduced this week its MultiChrome multi-GPU technology enabling two cards to work together through the PCI Express interface. The feature is currently supported only by the eight-pixel pipeline S27 GPU, which is compliant with DirectX 9.0, but lacks Shader Model 3.0. The cards are clocked at 700 MHz with 128 MB or 256 MB of GDDR3 memory also at 700 MHz.

VESA Approves DisplayPort Standard

Members of the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) have approved the DisplayPort interface standard. It promises higher resolutions and refresh rates as well as interactive communications between computers and other devices. Like HDMI, another format competing to succeed DVI, DisplayPort allows high-definition digital audio to be available to the display device over the same cable as the digital video signal. Dell, HP and Lenovo are among the companies backing the VESA format.

Intel has quietly started shipping the anticipated Pentium D 960 processor. The new top-of-the-line dual-core model is clocked at 3.6 GHz, uses 800 MHz FSB and packs 4 MB of L2 cache (2 MB per core). It supports EM64T, Virtualization Technology (VT), Enhanced SpeedStep and Execute Disable. The part costs USD 637 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Working Group Reproves 802.11n Draft

The IEEE 802.11 Working Group reproved draft 1.0 of the 802.11n wireless standard in today’s vote. Just 46.6% of the electorate thought it was ready to move to the next step while a 75% majority was needed. Members will now address reported problems, such as with interoperability, on a 2.0 version. The new 802.11n, to be finalized this year, is expected to allow speeds of up to 600 Mbps.

Nvidia Releases Free Gelato Software

Nvidia has released a free version of its Gelato 3D rendering software, currently in release 2.0, aimed at game development, CAD, industrial design and architecture. The solution can be downloaded from the company’s site. The USD 1,500 Pro version, however, adds a variety of exclusive features, such as 64-bit native support, Sorbetto interactive relighting, network parallel rendering, multithreading, DSO shadeops and dedicated support. Gelato 2.0 runs on Windows XP and Linux systems and GeForce 5200 or higher GPUs. The Pro edition requires Quadro FX cards.

Taiwanese PQI will soon start shipping a tiny flash drive capable of holding up to 16 GB. The card-sized (85x54x3 mm or 3.3x2.1x1.2 in.) U510, featuring a retractable USB 2.0 connector, will be available in stylish silver, gray and a special edition soccer ball theme. Pricing is not yet known.

Casio Announces 10.1-Megapixel Exilim

Casio will launch in June a new 10.1-megapixel model to its Exilim Zoom lineup of compact digital cameras. The EX-Z1000 packs a 2.8-inch ultra-bright wide LCD (maximum of 1,200 cd/m2), features a 3x optical zoom and includes an anti shake DSP built into the image processor. Casio claims the first shot can be taken 1.3 second after switching on and a time lag of only 0.002 second after the push of the shutter. Available in silver and black, the EX-Z1000 measures 3.62x2.3x0.88-inches, while weighing 4.9 oz. It uses MMC and SD cards and takes up to 360 shots on a single battery charge. Suggested retail price is USD 400.

Nintendo Revolution Renamed as ‘Wii’

Nintendo this week revealed the official name of its next-generation console known until now as Revolution. The chosen brand, Wii, is both a reference to the word ”we“ and, graphically, to two people playing together. Based on a PowerPC-derived processor and ATI GPU, the machine features a new one-handed controller, which Nintendo see as capable of changing current gaming concepts. The Wii is expected to be formarly introduced during the E3 expo (May 9-12).

OCZ has launched a new line of power supply units aimed at gamers. The SLI-ready GameXStream, available with 600 W and 700 W capacities, are equipped with 120 mm fan and includes 24-pin ATX, dual PCI Express, 4/8-pin CPU, SATA (six), 4-pin floppy (two) and 4-pin peripheral (six) connectors. The blue-lit PSUs also feature active Power Factor Correction (PFC) to regulate input voltage.

Seagate Ships 750 GB Perpendicular HD

Seagate this week officially released its highly anticipated Barracuda 7200.10 series, based on perpendicular technology, which led to capacities of up to 750 GB. The drives, available with 8 or 16 MB of cache and ATA-100, SATA or SATA 3 Gb/s interfaces, operate at 7,200 rpm with sustained data transfer rate of 78 MB/s and average latency of 4.16 ms. Other features include SoftSonic noise reduction and G-Force shock protection. Prices go from USD 104 (200 GB) to USD 590 (750 GB). The HDs are covered by Seagate’s five-year warranty.

ATI has added four graphics cards aimed at DCC, CAD and visualization customers to its FireGL workstation lineup. All new products sport Avivo technology, High Dynamic Range (HDR) 16-bit and dual link output. The high-end FireGL V7200 packs 8 parallel geometry engines, 12 pixel shader processors, 256 MB of GDDR3 and 512-bit ring bus memory controller. The other models are the mid-range V5200 and the entry level V3300 and V3400.

HyperTransport 3.0 Gets Ratification

The HyperTransport Consortium this week released version 3.0 of its interconnect specification. It extends the 1.4 GHz dual data rate maximum clock of HT 2.0 up to 2.6 GHz and delivers a maximum bandwidth of 41.6 GB/s. The revision also brings new features such as AC coupling mode, hot plugging, un-ganging mode and dynamic power management for the support of extended signal transmission distance. There is currently no info on products using HT 3.0.
