VIA today announced its EPIA EK-Series mini-ITX mainboard, packing a Luke CoreFusion processor running at either 800 MHz or 1 GHz, as well as UniChrome Pro Graphics (with MPEG-2/4 acceleration), six-channel Vinyl audio and hardware-based security (PadLock). Paired with a VT8237R south bridge, it includes support for 1 GB of DDR400 memory, two ATA-133 connectors, two Serial ATA connectors, one PCI slot, eight USB ports and Ethernet 10/100 or GbE LAN (VT6122). Power consumption is said to top at 19 W.

Logitech this week announced the Wireless DJ Music System, which lets users stream digital music from the PC to any stereo system or powered multimedia speakers, using the company’s Music Anywhere wireless technology. It consists of a transmitter that plugs to the PC via USB and a receiver that connects to the stereo system through a standard RCA connector or mini input jack. Navigation is done with a remote equipped with LCD display and scroll wheel. The range of both the transmitter and the control is 150 feet (50 meters). The Wireless DJ will be available in late September for USD 250.

Fuji Film this week announced a 2 GB xD-Picture Card. The capacity is not so impressive compared to other flash media, but it doubles the format’s current top size. Fuji also promises ”quick reading and writing speeds“, but as for now does not specify numbers. The 2 GB xD-Picture Card will be available in September.

ASUSTeK and Gigabyte today announced plans to form a joint-venture involving its motherboard and video card businesses. The resulting company, which will operate under the Gigabyte brand, will become official on January 1, 2007. Gigabyte will hold 51% of the joint-venture with ASUSTeK controlling the rest. The deal will allow the mobo makers to fend off competition from other top-tiers ECS, MSI and Foxconn (Hon Hai).

Verbatim today announced that it will later this month release a 2.66 GB Mini DVD-R DL (Dual Layer) disk. The new media will launch alongside Canon’s compatible DC22 camcorder. Nvidia this week introduced its Quadro Plex 1000 Visual Computing System (VCS). Available in 3U rackmount and desktop configurations, in three different models, the system provides performance of up to 80 billion pixels and 7 billion vertices per second with resolutions as high as 148 megapixels on 16 synchronized digital-output channels and eight HD SDI channels. Models I and III use two Quadro FX 5500 GPUs: the former accepts a G-Sync module while the latter gets an optional SDI module. The distinction, however, goes for model II, based on two dual-GPU Quadro FX 4500 X2, offering 8-dual link DVI, genlock/framelock, frame synchronization and 64x SLI FSAA. The systems are expected to ship in September with prices starting at USD 17,500.

Enthusiast memory maker Corsair this week entered the PSU market with a series of products called HX. The two initial models are available with 520 W and 620 W capacities. The units feature a modular design that eliminates cable clusters and optimizes airflow. Triple +12V rails offer combined maximum output rating of 50 Amp (620 W) and 40 Amp (520 W). Equipped with a 120 mm fan, the PSUs support ATX12V v2.2/2.01 and EPS12V 2.91. The 620 W model includes eight Serial ATA connectors (only four on the 520 W).

Apple has initiated a recall for 15-inch MacBook Pro batteries sold between February and May 2006. Some of the units do not meet performance standards. The company stressed that the batteries do not pose a safety risk and may be used until a free replacement arrives. ASUS has announced two VGA cards sporting HDMI connectors. The EN7600GT/HTDI/256MB (GeForce 7600 GT) is clocked at standard 560 MHz and packs 256 MB of 1.4 ns GDDR3 memory at 1.4 GHz. It includes HDTV-Out, HDMI-to-DVI-D, SPDIF optical and DVI-to-VGA adaptors. The other release is the EAX1600PRO/I/256MB (Radeon X1600 Pro), which clocks at 400 MHz, featuring 256 MB of GDDR3 at 800 MHz. It comes with HDMI-to-DVI-D, SPDIF coaxial and internal audio header.

ATI last week released the July edition of its Catalyst driver package (6.7). The main update involves Enhanced CrossFire Support, which allows Alternate Frame Rendering mode for Direct3D applications to be forced on by setting the Catalyst AI panel to the advanced position. Solved bugs include problems with task switching in Oblivion and texture corruption in Quake 4. The Linux version adds X.org 7.1 and Fedora Core support.
