As expected, ATI today announced its new VGA cards, which will actually be available only on September 14. Included is the new top of the line Radeon X1950 XTX/CrossFire (R580+) featuring GDDR4 support and an exclusive fansink. The card is clocked at 650 MHz with 512 MB of memory running at 2 GHz. The X1950 XTX GPU has 48 pixel shader processors, eight vertex shader engines and 256-bit interface. Suggested retail price is USD 449. ATI also announced the Radeon X1650 Pro (600 MHz, 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 1.4 GHz, 12 pixel shader, five vertex shader and 128-bit interface) and the Radeon X1300 XT (500 MHz, 256 MB of DDR2 at 800 MHz, 12 pixel shader, five vertex shader and 128-bit interface). Prices are USD 99 and USD 89.

Logitech Intros ChillStream Controller

Logitech has unveiled a PC gamepad with an interesting feature: it keeps the hands of gamers cool and dry. The ChillStream has a built-in 40 mm fan that circulates up to 3.41 cubic feet of air per minute. Three narrow vents on each side of the controller push air directly onto the four fingers, the base of the thumb and the palm of the hand. The air stream can be set at continuous, interval or off modes. The controller will be available in September for USD 40.

SanDisk Adds 8 GB Sansa MP3 Player

SanDisk this week announced it will add an 8 GB model to its Sansa e200 line of MP3 players. With the actual launch, in September, the company will offer double the capacity of the top iPod nano (4 GB) for the same price (USD 250). Like its siblings, the e280 measures 1.7x3.5x0.5 inches (4.4x8.9x.1.3 cm) and sports a 1.8-inch TFT color screen. It also has video playback capability, FM tuner, voice recorder and a microSD expansion slot, for up to 2 GB of additional memory.

Marvell Develops WLAN-Bluetooth Chip

Marvell has developed the first CMOS combining WiFi (802.11a/b/g) and Bluetooth connectivity. Aimed at mobile phones, media players, portable gaming consoles, PDAs and ultra-low-power computers, the 88W8688 chip allows optimized simultaneous dual radio operation and cooperative co-existence. It incorporates full Layer 3 networking support (TCP/IP and UDP) and adds the ability to run supplicants natively. The 90-nm chip also includes voice and audio codecs that can be used in a variety of media applications and platforms. Marvell has not specified a timetable for commercial availability.

ATI Unveils TV Wonder 650 and 200

ATI has unveiled two new TV tuner cards: the TV Wonder 650 and the TV Wonder 200. The first product, based on the Theater 650 Pro chip (with motion-adaptive 3D comb filter and noise reduction capabilities), supports Avivo technology and records content in DivX, H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and WMV9 formats. It is capable of receiving standard definition analog and hi-def over-the-air programming. The solution includes remote control and FM tuner. Suggested retail price is USD 129. The basic TV Wonder 200, only available with PCI interface, sells for USD 59.

Abit Launches AW9D Core 2 Duo Mobos

Abit this week officially introduced its AW9D and AW9D-MAX motherboards aimed at Core 2 Duo processors. The maker also claims the two models are quad-core (Kentsfield) ready. Both boards are based on Intel’s 975X chipset, but the MAX version features additional Serial ATA ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet and Silent OTES 2 cooling technology in place of the older Silent OTES used by the standard AW9D. Specifications are the following:

ATI Releases Catalyst 6.8 Driver Pack

ATI today published the August version of its Catalyst driver package. It promises performance improvements in OpenGL applications across the Radeon X1000 series and additional gains in apps that make heavy use of memory on 256 MB cards. As expected, the new package also solves a variety of bugs. The Linux release includes a feature called Pairmode, which allows users to enable BigDesktop mode with different screen resolutions, and retaining display device status between restarts.

TwinMOS has launched a new USB 2.0 drive featuring fingerprint identification. The F1 device supports functions such as Windows auto-login, screen saver lock and password bank and automatically switches between encrypted and unencrypted areas. It weighs about 15 g and is available in 128 MB to 4 GB capacities.

OCZ has reached the 1.1 GHz mark with its new PC2-8800 Gold Edition memory. The device, equipped with gold layered XTC heatspreaders, has 5-6-6-15 latencies and operate at 2.2 volts (up to 2.4 volts with Extended Voltage Protection coverage). The memory is only available in 2 GB dual channel kits.

AMD has officially announced the new Opteron revision F. The processors feature a new 1,207-pin socket, DDR2 memory support and virtualization tech. Along with the chips, AMD also introduced a revamped four-digit naming scheme: 12XX for one-way socket AM2 products, 22XX for two-way socket F and 82XX for eight-way socket F. Processors are available in three versions: high efficiency (HE), consuming up to 68 W; standard (95 W); and Special Edition (SE), which goes all the way up to 120 W. Prices of socket F models range from USD 255 (2210) to USD 2,649 (8220 SE) in 1,000-unit quantities.

Dell Recalls 4.1 Million Batteries

Dell has announced a voluntary recall for 4.1 million batteries sold with Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision Mobile Workstation notebooks between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006. All units were manufactured by Sony in Japan or China. The procedure is considered the largest battery recall in the consumer electronics industry. Dell has stated that ”under rare conditions“ the batteries can overheat and, thus, pose a risk of fire. Consumers are advised to eject positively identified batteries and to rely on the original AC power adapter until another unit is available.

Logitech today introduced its EasyCall desktop bundle including a full-duplex speakerphone and a stereo headset for Internet calling. The cordless keyboard includes a communications panel that lets users control calls and easily launch VoIP applications or instant messaging software. The package is completed with a MX 600 laser cordless mouse. The EasyCall Desktop will be available in mid-September for USD 130. Logitech announced two other keyboard/mouse combos: the MX 3200 (USD 100) and the LX 710 (USD 80).

Gigabyte has released a GeForce 7600 GS card with AGP interface featuring a silent cooling solution. The GV-N76G256D-RH packs 256 MB of GDDR2 memory and includes VGA, dual link DVI and HDTV-Out connectors. Clock speeds are not disclosed. The GeForce 7600 GS GPU has 12 pixel pipelines, five vertex shaders engines and 128-bit interface.
