LaCie's SAFE Mobile Hard Drive, a USB 2.0 hard drive with built-in fingerprint authentication, has just become safer. Now it guarantees protection for your confidential files with two additional layers of security: a secure chain lock port to physically attach the drive to your desk, and a "drive lock" firmware, which prevents access to the hard drive content when plugged into another computer.

The desktop version comes in 160 GB, 320 GB and 500 GB and costs from USD 150 to USD 300. The Laptop Version (no power supply needed) comes in 40 GB, 80 GB and 120 GB and costs from USD 100 to USD 280.

NVidia has just  released two new graphic chips: GeForce 7900 GS, available immediately, and GeForce 7950 GT, that comes to replace GeForce 7900 GT, hitting the shops on 14 September.

GeForce 7900 GS brings a 450MHz core speed, 256 MB DDR3, a 256-bits memory interface, 20 pixels per clock and 7 vertex shaders. Suggested price segment: USD 199 to USD 249.

Vista Has Official Price Released

Microsoft officially prices its new operating system Windows Vista on its website. A week prior to this annoucement, Amazon had already unveiled the software pricing right on the spot and suggested a ship date of January 30 - which is not confirmed by Microsoft.

Windows Vista Business has a suggested retail price for full package product of USD 299.00 and an upgrade retail price of USD 199.00. A full package of Windows Vista Home Premium will cost USD 239.00 and its upgrade, USD 159.00. Windows Vista Home Basic has a suggested retail price for full package product of USD 199.00 and an upgrade retail price of 99.95. And for USD 399.00 (full package) or USD 259.00 (upgrade) you can take a Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.

HP Announces iPAQ RX4000

iPAQ rx4000 is HP's latest Mobile Media Companion. It features a 2.8-inch wide touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, Windows Mobile 5.0 and scroll wheel for a one-handed operation. Consumers can download VoIP software to make free PC-to-PC calls. It will be launched in October in Asian market for an estimated price of US$ 300. No word on when it will be available in other parts of the world.

Toshiba and Pretec’s 16GB USB Drives

Toshiba and Pretec have announced the highest capacity USB drives in the world, that holds 16GB of data. This is equivalent to 23 CDs or 4 regular DVDs, and can store more than 4.000 MP3 songs. Pretec's I-Disk II runs at speed of 166x, offers data transfer rate of 25MB/sec, password protection and data encryption. It will be release in Q4. Toshiba has announced a limited edition of TransMemory USB, also with 16GB, to be released in December.

Logitech Intros Z-10 Speaker System

Logitech this week introduced a new member of its Advanced Peripherals line, the Z-10 Interactive Speaker System, featuring built-in touch-sensitive controls and a backlighted display that shows track, volume, clock and system information from the PC. The equipment integrates one-inch tweeters and three-inch woofers on each satellite and uses a built-in amplifier which splits the high and low frequencies. The speakers also include a headphone jack and a 3.5 mm auxiliary input that can connect to MP3 players or other audio devices. The Z-10 will be available in September for USD 150.

Inno3D Announces GeForce 7100 GS

Inno3D has already announced a VGA card based on Nvidia’s new GeForce 7100 GS entry-level GPU. The product is clocked at standard 350 MHz and packs either 128 MB or 256 MB of GDDR2 memory at 533 MHz. TurboCache tech can raise it to 512 MB by borrowing from system memory. The card includes VGA, DVI and TV-Out connectors. The GF 7100 GS has four pixel pipelines and 64-bit interface.

ATI Launches Xpress 1250 for Intel

ATI this week announced the Radeon Xpress 1250, a notebook-aimed Intel chipset, supporting Avivo architecture and HDMI interface. Formerly known as RS600, it carries a Radeon X700-derived GPU, capable of using 16 MB to 512 MB of system memory. The chipset supports up to 16 GB of DDR2-800 SDRAM and includes a PCI Express x16 slot. It is paired with ATI’s own SB600 south bridge (ten USB 2.0 ports, four Serial ATA 3 Gb/s, ATA-133, six PCI slots and high-definition audio).

Intel Unveils ”Tulsa“ Xeon MP 7100

Intel has unveiled its Netburst-based Xeon MP 7100 series. The 65-nm dual-core chips are available in M (800 MHz frontside bus) and N (667 MHz) versions. The complete list follows: 7110N (2.5 GHz, 4 MB of L3 cache), 7110M (2.6 GHz, 4 MB), 7120N (3 GHz, 4 MB), 7120M (3 GHz, 4 MB), 7130N (3.16 GHz, 8 MB), 7130M (3.2 GHz, 8 MB), 7140N (3.33 GHz, 16 MB), 7140M (3.4 GHz, 16 MB). Power consumption is rated at 95 W for the first four and at 150 W for the rest. Prices range from USD 856 to USD 1,980.

Corsair Unveils Dominator Memory

Corsair has unveiled a new memory equipped with Dual-path Heat Xchange (DHX) technology. The DHX XMS2 Dominator series initially consists of PC2-8500 (1,066 MHz) and PC2-8888 (1,111 MHz) modules with 5-5-5-15 and 4-4-4-12 latencies. The PC2-8888 model also features a three-fan Dominator Airflow to increase air circulation through the heatsink. According to Corsair, the product will hit retail in September, with 2 GB dual channel kits costing USD 600-650 for the PC2-8888 and USD 380-400 for the PC2-8500. The latter can also be paired with an optional Dominator Airflow (USD 25).

Introduced last month with its desktop counterparts, Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors for notebooks, formerly known as Merom, are now officially available. The five initial models are the T7200 (2 GHz), T7400 (2.16 GHz) and T7600 (2.33 GHz), with 4 MB of L2, and the T5500 (1.66 GHz) and T5600 (1.83 GHz), with 2 MB of L2. All five sport a 667 MHz frontside bus. Prices range from USD 209 to USD 637 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Canon Releases Two New Photo Printers

Canon last week released two new affordable PIXMA photo printers. The MP510, priced at USD 150, is an all-in-one model with a foldable 1.9-inch color LCD and two built-in paper trays. The front of the printer includes card slots and a PictBridge port for compatible cameras. According to the company, the MP510 can yield a 4x6 photo in 47 seconds. Maximum resolution is 4800x1200 dpi. The iP4300 is said to print a 4x6 photo in 36 seconds with maximum resolution reaching 9600x2400 dpi. Document print speeds are 30 ppm (bw) and 24 ppm (color). The USD 100 model also features auto-duplexing for printing on both sides of the paper.

OCZ Technology has expanded its flash memory line with the SD Dual combo card. Like similar products from other companies, the device has a detachable cover, which reveals a USB 2.0 connector. The SD Dual offers 80x read speed and is initially available in 1 GB and 2 GB versions.

Apple Also Recalls Sony Batteries

Apple has announced a recall for 1.8 million lithium-ion notebook batteries due to the same overheating issues that moved Dell to recall 4.1 million units last week. In both cases the devices were manufactured by Sony. The affected batteries were sold worldwide between October 2003 and August 2006 for use in the 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. Consumers are advised to remove the batteries and use the AC adapter until a replacement arrives.
