Seagate releases 400 GB hard drive

Seagate has released a new 400 GB hard drive, which the company claims is the highest capacity available in the market. The Barracuda 7200.8 works at 7200 rpm with an average seek time of 8 ms. It is available with ATA-100 and Serial ATA interfaces. The latter supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ), a technology that allows the drive to manage multiple commands and optimizes performance.

Tul unveils silent X700 XT card

Tul announced a PowerColor card based on the Radeon X700 XT VPU with the new Silent Cooling System, a high performance fanless cooler using heatpipe technology with gold-plated copper tube. The SCS X700XT has eight pixel pipelines, 128-bit memory bus and is clocked at 475 MHz. It is available with up to 256 MB GDDR3 memory at 1,050 MHz. The PCI Express card comes with VGA, TV-Out, Dual-DVI and VIVO connectors.

Intel launches the 3.8 GHz Pentium 4

Intel has finally launched the Pentium 4 570J, clocked at 3.8 GHz, which will be the highest clock available for some time, since the company recently dropped plans of a 4 GHz P4. The 90 nm chip uses an 800 MHz FSB and sports 1 MB of L2 cache. The J means that the processor supports the no-execute security bit.

Intel introduces BTX products

Motherboard Intel introduced a bunch of products compatible with the Balanced Technology Extended (BTX) format for use in the worldwide distribution channel. The list includes microBTX boxed motherboards (BOXD915GMHLK and BOXD915GMHL) featuring integrated graphics and PCI Express. The first one offers additional features such as advanced audio and FireWire support. Intel is also launching boxed processors (530J, 550J and 560J) with BTX Type I thermal modules. Previously BTX PCs were available only from OEMs, but now should be offered by the channel too. The components require power supplies and cases compatible with the new form factor.

ATI releases new Catalyst driver

Video ATI has just released the latest version (4.11) of its Catalyst driver. According to the company, this is a minor update, containing bug fixes and improvements such as a new monitor tab for each display device. The suite updates both the ATI Display Driver (8.071) and the Catalyst Control Center (4.11). The latter is recommended only for Radeon 9500 or higher cards.

WD announces portable USB hard drives

Western Digital unveiled new WD Passport Portable USB drives that dispense a separate power supply in most systems. The devices, available in 40 GB and 80 GB, use Scorpio 2.5 inch EIDE hard drives. A shock-absorbing case and Data Lifeguard tools are combined to protect against damage and data loss. The drives have a 2 MB buffer and work at 5400 rpm. Suggested retail prices are USD 199 for the 40 GB model and USD 249 for the 80 GB.

Nvidia unveils GeForce Go 6800 GPU

Video Nvidia unveiled this week its first mobile graphics chip based on GeForce 6 series architecture. The GeForce Go 6800 is a PCI Express GPU for desktop replacement notebooks featuring 12 pixel pipelines, 5 vertex pipelines and 256-bit memory interface. Nvidia plans to ship different versions clocked at from 275 MHz to 450 MHz with memory frequencies ranging from 400 MHz to 600 MHz. Additional features include a video decoding acceleration technology called PureVideo and power consumption management tool PowerMizer 5.0.

Antec launches fanless power supply

Antec launched a fanless 350 watt power supply called Phantom. According to the company its high efficiency circuitry reduces excess heat and its aluminum casing acts as a heatsink, eliminating the need for moving parts. The Phantom 350 includes features such as dedicated voltage outputs, advanced voltage-feedback circuitry and dual +12V output circuits. It comes with two SATA connectors and a six-pin PCI Express connector.

Intel launches six new Itanium 2

CPU Intel launched this week new versions of multi, dual and low voltage Itanium 2 processors. The multi-way products include the highly anticipated 1.6 GHz chip with 9 MB of L3 cache. The company also unveiled a MP version with the same clock and 6 MB of L3 and a 1.5 GHz model with 4 MB of L3. Other new products are two DP chips clocked at 1.6 GHz with 3 MB of L3 – available with 400 MHz or 533 MHz FSB – and a low voltage (62 W) chip clocked at 1.3 GHz with 3 MB of L3.

Creative announces Audigy 4 Pro

Audio Creative announced the limited edition Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro sound card featuring 113 dB SNR Digital to Analog Converters (DACs) for 24-bit HD audio. It includes an external I/O hub with analog stereo connectors for six-channel input, optical and coaxial digital I/O, full-sized MIDI I/O, microphone with gain control, headphone and volume control and two FireWire ports. The new Creative Smart Recorder software supports automatic scheduling of recordings from any source and cuts the single audio stream into individual tracks. The pack includes the games “Thief: Deadly Shadows” and “Hitman: Contracts”. Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro will be available this month priced at US$ 299.

ATI unveils Radeon Xpress 200 chipsets

Motherboard ATI unveiled its new Radeon Xpress 200 and Radeon Xpress 200P chipsets for socket 754 and 939 AMD processors. They are identical except for the absence of DirectX 9 integrated graphics (based on the Radeon X300) on the 200P version. The chipsets include 1 GHz HyperTransport bus support, one PCI-E x16 slot for add-in graphics cards, four PCI-E x1 slots, four Serial ATA ports (RAID 0,1), eight USB 2.0 ports and AC97 audio. A number of partners has already annouced products based on the new chipsets.

Gigabyte released its first nForce4 board, the GA-K8NXP-9, part of its 8-Sigma series. Thermaltake announced the Hardcano 13, an application for 5.25 inch drive bays that integrates a smart card reader and a fan controller. The six-in-one reader is compatible with CF, Microdrive, SM, SD, MMC and MS. The fan controller and monitoring device contains four sets of temperature display (in Celsius or Fahrenheit), four sets of fan speed display and four sets of fan failure display. The Hardcano 13 has a back light LCD monitor with eight color options.

DFI will start selling a Pentium M motherboard for desktops, the 855GME-MGF, this month. Based on the Intel mobile 855GME/6300 ESB chipset, it supports socket 479 Pentium M processors, bringing low noise and low energy consumption to the desktop. The 855GME-MGF is based on the standard Micro ATX form factor and features support for DDR333 memory and AGP 4x. For overclockers, advanced BIOS features include adjustable CPU clock (100 to 250 MHz), adjustable CPU ratio (6 to infinite), adjustable FSB to memory ratio (1:1, 4:3, 5:3), asynchronized PCI/AGP modes (33/66, 36/73, 40/80) and built-in stability testing for both memory and CPU.
