Video Albatron released a new PCI Express GeForce 6600 card featuring a new heatpipe technology and 128 MB of high speed BGA memory (2.8 ns) that promises to take its performance close to 6600 GT heights. The PC6600U has eight pixel pipelines, 128-bit interface and is clocked at 350 MHz. It comes with VGA, DVI and TV-Out connectors and includes the “Arx Fatalis” game.

Sony adds MP3 support to player

CE Sony will start selling this month its first HD-based audio player with native MP3 support. The NW-HD3 offers the same 20 GB as the previous models (NW-HD1 and NW-HD2) and keeps support for the company´s ATRAC3plus proprietary format. Measuring 90 x 62.1 x 14.8 mm, weighing 130 g and sporting a 1.5 inch display, the new player promises bigger battery life: 30 hours with ATRAC files and 22 hours with MP3. The NW-HD3 will be first released in Japan (USD 410) and the UK (USD 470), arriving in the rest of Europe one month later.

Cell PlayStation 3 processor detailed

IBM, Sony and Toshiba unveiled the first details of the Cell microprocessor that is to equip the PlayStation 3. According to the companies, it is a multicore chip comprising a 64-bit Power processor core and multiple synergistic processor cores capable of massive floating point processing, all optimized for compute-intensive workloads and broadband rich media applications. More info on the Cell processor will be relead during the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) on 6 February 2005. Other characteristics include:

  • Multi-thread, multicore architecture.
  • Supports multiple operating systems.
  • Substantial bus bandwidth to/from main memory, as well as companion chips.
  • Flexible on-chip I/O (input/output) interface.
  • Real-time resource management system for real-time applications.
  • On-chip hardware in support of security system for intellectual property protection.
  • Implemented in 90 nanometer silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology.

Crucial releases Ballistix Tracer memory

Memory Crucial released a new series of Ballistix memories – called Tracer – sporting two rows of eight "chasing" red and green LEDs that indicate activity by circulating at varying speeds. According to the company, a custom-designed chip in the PCB relays bus information to the LEDs, allowing them to accurately reflect usage of each memory module. In addition, eight blue undercarriage LEDs emit a constant glow near the pins. Ballistix Tracer DDR500/PC4000 are currently available in 512 MB and 1 GB modules with 2.5-4-4-8 latencies.

HIS extended its IceQ series with the release of a feature-packed Radeon X700 Pro card. The X700Pro IceQ TURBO includes iTURBO overclocking technology, a blue led fan and a UV sensitive case. The card has eight pixel pipelines, 128-bit memory bus and is clocked at 425 MHz. It packs 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 864 MHz and comes with VGA, HDTV-Out, DVI and VIVO connectors.

Speed Premium series from TwinMOS

Memory TwinMOS recently announced the Speed Premium DDR400 series, consisting of DDR400/PC3200 modules with overclocking settings to achieve 450 MHz with no need for BIOS setup changes. The modules are offered in 256 MB and 512 MB capacities with CAS latency of 2.5. According to the company, Advantest T5585/T5593 have been applied before shipping to ensure their stability and compatibility.

Gigabyte unveils nForce4 SLI board

Gigabyte added a new board to its 8Σ nForce4 lineup – aimed at socket 939 Athlon 64 and 64 FX processors – supporting multiple VGA cards through Scalable Link Interface (SLI). The Nvidia chipset brings other new features such as Serial ATA II support and NV firewall. Corsair Memory announced a new memory product line called System Select, designed to meet the needs of consumers in the upgrading of desktops, laptops and servers. The idea is avoiding the need to consult compatibility charts. For this, the consumer can use the Corsair Memory Configurator, searching for modules compatible with the brand and model of his system. The online tool includes over 15,000 systems and 1,000 motherboards.

ATI introduces Mobility X300 and X800

Video ATI introduced new mobile PCI Express chips to the low-end and high-end market segments. The Mobility X300, with four pixel pipelines and 128-bit interface, is targeted at cheaper systems. The Mobility X800 is a version of the most advanced Radeon architecture and offers features such as 12 pixel pipelines, GDDR3 memory, 256-bit interface, 3Dc image enhancement technology and HD VideoShader. Both chips features PowerPlay 5.0 power management capabilities. The first notebooks sporting the Mobility X300 and X800 should appear in December.

AMD releases Mobile Sempron 3000+

CPU AMD extended its Mobile Sempron family with the release of a 3000+ model. It is clocked at 1.8 GHz and contains only 128 KB of L2 cache. The 90-nanometer 754-pin part supports 3D Now!, SSE2 and No Execute technologies. The Mobile Sempron 3000+ is priced at USD 134 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Futuremark releases 3Dmark03 patch

Video Futuremark released a patch to the 3DMark03 providing the new valid version (3.5.0) of the benchmark suite. Only scores obtained through this version and with approved drivers will be used in official statistics, comparisons and services provided by the company. Among the novelties, are an updated System Info module with support for the latest CPU and graphics hardware; updated version of the Entech library, which is used to detect the clock frequency of the graphics chip core and memory; and the usual corrections for reported bugs. The 5.2 MB patch can be dowloaded for free.

Memory OCZ Technology announced a new PC-3200 Voltage eXtreme Gold series memory, designed to operate at a high voltage in order to increase the speed and stability and provide aggressive timings. Running at the standard 2.6 volts, OCZ PC-3200 Gold VX boasts 2-3-3-8 latencies, but at 3.2 volts the memory is capable of achieving 2-2-2-8. The memory has integrated gold mirrored copper heatspreaders and is available in 512 MB modules and 1 GB dual channel kits.

Albatron announced its first VIA K8T890 board, the K8X890 Pro, for 939-pin Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX processors. It includes one PCI-E x16 for a VGA card and one PCI-E x4 slot. Albatron also implemented a new type of power supply system on the board. The Power Width Modulation (PWM) module adds a fourth phase to the original three phases of the Voltage Regulator Module (VRM). The K8X890 Pro´s main features are:

Nvidia Intel chipsets get closer

CPU Nvidia may be closer to finally offering Intel chipsets. The companies announced the signing of a broad multi-year patent cross-license agreement and a chipset agreement for Intel's front-side bus technology. According to a press release, this will enable Nvidia to deliver the Nforce platform on Intel-based systems, but neither company elaborated on specific products.
