SanDisk and Sony announced the 'Memory Stick PRO-HG' format, an expanded format from the 'Memory Stick PRO'. This new Duo-sized card ups the maximum storage capacity to 32GB and uses an 8-bit parallel interface in addition to a conventional serial and 4-bit parallel interface. It has a 60 MHz clock frequency and supports data transfer speed up to 480Mbps, three times faster as that of 'Memory Stick PRO' media. The minimum write speed at 8-bit parallel transfer is 120 Mbps, or 15MB/s.

Epson Rolls Out New Processor for Portable Devices

Epson has developed an application processor, the S1C33E08, to portable devices, which offers a one-chip solution integrating functions required for electronic dictionaries, e-books, color LCD control circuit, USB 2.0 device connectivity, and other portable devices features. It also brings a MP3 hardware accelerator which features a decoder and a playback API offer high-speed processing for easy MP3 playback. The color LCD control circuit is compatible with both STN-type and TFT-type liquid crystal displays.

Shipment of samples will begin in December 2006, and volume production is scheduled to start in February 2007. Full-scale production is expected to be 1 million units per month.

Buffalo announces the world's first 5.25" HD DVD drive for desktops computers. The HDV-ROM2.4FB runs HD DVD-ROM, HD DVD-R, DVD±R/RW, CD-ROM and CD-R/RW media. The new drive features a copy of Cyberlink’s  PowerDVD HD DVD Edition software. It will be released in Japan later this month with an estimated price of USD 320.

Kingston today announced the availability of two new DDR2 memory modules. The PC9600 has 1.2 GHz and the PC9200 has 1.1 GHz. They both have latencies of 5-5-5-15 and they are available in 512 MB and 1 GB modules or 1 GB and 2 GB dual channel kits. Prices ranges from USD 139 for the 512 MB 1.2 GHz DDR2 to USD 518 for the 2 GB 1.1 GHz DDR2 Kit.

AMD Launches Quad FX Plataform

AMD rolls out today the Quad FX platform, which puts four cores on a dual-socket for the first time. The new plataform is based on two Athlon 64 FX dual-core processors. ASUS L1N64-SLI WS will be one of the first motherboard to use the new plataform.

The new processor FX-70 has clock frequency of 2600 MHz, system bus tech of 2000 MHz and voltage of 1.35-1.40. Its maximum temperature is 55-63ºC. The FX-72 has clock frequency of 2800 MHz, system bus tech of 2000 MHz and voltage of 1.35-1.40. Its maximum temperature is also 55-63ºC. The FX-74 has clock frequency of 3000 MHz, system bus tech of 2000 MHz and voltage of 1.35-1.40. Its maximum temperature is 56ºC. All of them use AMD’s socket F and are manufactured using a 90nm SOI process. 

AMD is shipping the FX-74, FX-72 and FX-70 in pairs at USD 999, USD 799 and USD 599, respectively.
