Netgear announced its new MP115 networked digital home entertainment solution, allowing access to video, photo, and music file collections from anywhere within the home network. The device streams content wirelessly from PCs to TVs and home stereo systems through 802.11b and 802.11g networks. The player includes software that catalogs all digital image and music files stored on the network. Compatible file formats include MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, MP3 (up to 320 kbps), Windows Media Audio (WMA8 and WMA 9), WAV, M3U and PLS. The MP115 interfaces with other home theater devices through stereo audio, composite video, component video, S-Video jacks and SCART interface (for Europe and Australia). Suggested retail price is USD 220.

Micron ships its first 2 Gb NAND flash

Memory Micron Technology has shipped its first 2 Gb NAND flash memory products aimed at flash cards, USB devices, mass storage devices and mobile applications. The components are manufactured on a 90-nanometer process and according to the company are verified with major NAND controllers to be drop-in compatible with existing 2 Gb NAND devices utilizing those controllers. Volume production has already begun.

Samsung announces giant plasma screen

CE Samsung has allegedly completed development of a 102-inch high density plasma monitor codenamed Atlas. The equipment has 1920x1080 resolution and a constrast ratio of 2000:1. Its measurements are equally wondrous: 7.2 x 4.2 ft. Samsung has not defined pricing or availability, but the giant plasma monitor should be on sale on H1 2005.

Iomega ships new external HDs

Storage Iomega has started shipping external hard drives that incorporate a Firewire 800 interface in addition to USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 ports. The 7200 rpm units are available in three capacities: 160GB, 250 GB and the new 400 GB. The HDs have a new enclosure with high-gloss black finish and can be mounted horizontally, for drive stacking, or vertically. Suggested U.S. prices are USD 199 (160GB), USD 279 (250GB) and USD $429 (400GB).

Nvidia announces PureVideo technology

Video Nvidia has announced the PureVideo technology, available in GeForce 6 series GPUs, defined as a combination of hardware and software technologies designed to raise video capabilities of desktop and notebook PCs. According to the company, it allows for accelerated playback of MPEG-2 and high-definition video content at home-theater levels of quality, at resolutions up to 720p and 1080i. Nvidia has also released a DVD Decoder – compatible with Windows Media Player and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 – and an update for its ForceWare software to enable the functionality of the PureVideo algorithms. The company has not specified which GPUs will actually offer the technology.

Western Digital cools its HDs

Storage Western Digital announced that its Caviar family of hard drives has been enhanced to lower power comsumption and therefore reduce operating temperatures. The new WD Caviar “Cool” series includes 8 MB buffer and 2 MB buffer models working at 7200 rpm and is available in capacities of 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 250 GB. A 320 GB model is in production and should go on sale before the end of the year.

MSI releases nForce4 SLI motherboard

MSI launched two motherboards based on nForce4 chipsets. The K8N Neo Platinum is based on the Ultra version, which brings Serial ATA II compatibility and NV firewall, among other features. The highlight though is the K8N Diamond, based on the nForce4 SLI, sporting multiple VGA cards support through Scalable Link Interface, Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit audio and Wi-Fi (802.11g) and Bluetooth connectivity.

The K8N Diamond´s main specifications are the following:

Elpida develops new DRAM technology

Memory Japanese company Elpida says it has developed a new distortion control technology that improves data retentiveness, an element that is crucial for obtaining high yields of high-performance DRAM products during the mass production phase. Distortion control was developed in partnership with NEC´s System Devices Research Laboratory. The technology is also supposed to allow volume-produced DRAM to achieve the higher performance necessary for future applications while remaining cost-competitive. Elpida plans to apply this innovative technology to all of its current and future DRAM products.

Prolink announces GeForce 6200 TC

Video Prolink has already announced two PixelView VGA cards based on the new GeForce 6200 TurboCache, a PCI Express entry-level GPU featuring the capability of sharing the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated video memory and dynamically available system memory. The PV-N44ET(16MD), for instance, brings only 16 MB of DDR memory at 600 MHz, but achieves effective memory size of up to 128 MB with TurboCache. Likewise, the PV-N44E(64LD) has 64 MB at 500 MHz, but can get up to 256 MB using system memory. The GeForce 6200 chip is clocked at 350 MHz, has four pixel pipelines and fully supports DirectX 9.0/Shader 3.0.

Nvidia will develop PS3 GPU

Video Nvidia will provide graphics technology to the PlayStation 3 console. The company is expected to colaborate in developing a custom GPU incorporating next-generation GeForce and Sony´s system solutions featuring the Cell processor. This collaboration is made under a broad, multi-year, royalty-bearing agreement. ATI has fetched a similar contract for the Xbox 2.

Albatron announced two motherboards based on the ULi M1689 single-chip solution: the K8Ultra-U and K8Ultra-U Pro. The company claims that the boards, aimed at 754-pin AMD processors, provide a variety of features with 64-bit driver support designed to the forthcoming Windows XP 64-bit Edition. Opteron gets PowerNow! technology

CPU AMD announced that the Opteron processor family will include PowerNow! technology with Optimized Power Management (OPM) beginning in the first half of 2005. According to the company, the PowerNow! feature will allow enterprise IT and workstation customers to decrease overall power consumption by enabling them to optimize performance-on-demand. The integration of PowerNow! technology with OPM can reduce power consumption in the datacenter by dynamically changing power states based on workload utilization.

Tul releases Radeon X850 XT PE

Tul has released its first Radeon X850 card. The high-end PowerColor X850 XT Platinum Edition (R48-XVD3) is clocked at 540 MHz and brings 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 1,180 MHz. The PCI Express card has 16 pixel pipelines and uses a 256-bit memory interface. It includes VGA, Dual DVI, HDTV-Out and VIVO connectors.

OCZ announces ModStream PSUs

OCZ Technology announced the release of the ModStream power supply family. The PSUs are equipped with OCZ EZMod technology, a cable management system that allows customization by utilizing only the UV glowing cables the user requires, resulting in optimal airflow and elimination of cable mazes. The units also sport PowerWhisper technology to reduce noise generated by its 120 mm fan and PowerShield EMI control technology with copper shielded power leads to provide current stabilization. Enclosed in titanium cases, the ModStream products are available in 450 and 520 watts versions with peak loads of 550 and 620 watts.

ATI releases X850 and X800 chips

Video ATI has officially released its new Radeon X850 series and extended its X800 line. The high-end X850 have the same architecture as the X800 family, with 256-bit GDDR3 memory interface and over 160 million transistors, but offers higher clock speeds. There will be three models available: X850 XT Platinum Edition (16 pixel pipelines, 540 MHz, memory at 1,180 MHz), X850 XT (16 pipelines, 520 MHz, 1,080 MHz) and X850 Pro (12 pipelines, 520 MHz, 1,080 MHz). The new Radeon X800 family members are cheaper XL and basic versions. Only the Radeon X850 XT PE is immediately available.
