Chenbro introduced a microBTX form factor case, the PC30769. The BTX, microBTX and picoBTX formats, supported by Intel, provide better thermal performance to address heat dissipation issues. The PC30769 includes PS2 or CFR (optional) PSUs and screwless designs for 5.25 and 3.5 devices, slot holder and HD holder. It also offers padlock loop and supports Kensington lock.

Maxell announces scratch-resistant DVD

Storage The anti-scratch CDs and DVDs are catching on. This week Maxell announced the 4.7 GB DVD-R Pro, featuring a proprietary hard-coat technology that protects against scratches. The disc also sports improved antistatic quality allowing use in dusty environments. The 8x DVD-Pro is available now and the 16x version will begin shipping in March. TDK and Imation have already unveiled CDs and DVDs with similar protection features.

Video ATI has introduced its new Mobility Radeon X700, featuring eight pixel pipelines and six vertex engines and aimed mainly at thinīnīlight notebooks. The PCI Express part promises to offer longer battery life through the POWERPLAY 5.0 power management tool and other improvements. It also includes features such as LRTC and LCD-EE for high-quality video playback and Automatic Display Configuration technology for simplified setup of external displays.

ATI releases Catalyst 5.1 driver

Video ATI released its first 2005 update to its Catalyst driver. Version 5.1 brings a variety of fixes, dealing with bugs involving dual head systems, video playback, PCI Express, XVideo overlay and a range of games. It also includes support for 64-bit architectures under XFree86 4.3 and X.org 6.8 Linux. The Control Center version now works with all Radeon GPUs and has pause and stop buttons in 3D preview. The download files have 22 MB and 28 MB (Control Center).

Intel launches new Centrino platform

CPU Intel officially announced today its second generation Centrino platform. It includes new Pentium M chips (from 1.6 GHz to 2.13 GHz with 533 MHz frontside bus) and two new Mobile Express chipsets supporting the 533 MHz FSB, PCI Express, DDR2, Serial ATA, 8-channel HD audio and XD security feature. The only difference between the i915PM and the i915GM is that the latest includes GMA 900 integrated video. Intel released to other chipsets, the i915GMS and i910GML, supporting only 400 MHz FSB and aimed at small form factor and Celeron M based notebooks, respectively. The new Centrino will bundle current PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g) and 2915ABG (802.11a/b/g) chips.

Memory Corsair Memory announced a new 2 GB Voyager USB 2.0 flash drive. The device offers read speeds of up to 19 MB/s and write speeds of up to 13 MB/s. It has a shock and water resistant soft rubber casing. The CMFUSB2.0-2GB is shipping worldwide now with suggested price of USD 189. The Voyager USB 2.0 flash drive is also available in 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB capacities.

Smithfield to set consumption record

CPU Tomīs Hardware Guide reports that Intelīs future dual-core processors will reach new heights in power consumption, with an increase of 13% from current Prescott Pentium 4s. Documents released to system builders and seen by the site specify the thermal design power (TDP) of Smithfield processors at 130 watts. This would represent an increase of more than 13% over the Pentium 4 5xx series (Prescott) and the upcoming 6xx series, which post 115 watts. The site suggests that Smithfield processors will thus require more powerful cooling solutions than the conventional cooling fans currently used.

MSI released the MEGA 521, an MP3 player that offers a series of additional features: FM receiver with 15 memory positions (optional), voice and FM recording, pedometer and stopwatch. As usual, it also works as an USB flash disk The player measures 82 x 51 x 18,6 mm and weighs 60 g (with built-in Li-ion rechargeable battery). It sports a 23 x 12 mm OLED display and is available in 128 MB, 256 MB and 512 MB capacities.

HIS announces Radeon X850 XT cards

HIS announced that its Excalibur Radeon X850 XT and X850 XT Platinum Edition cards with Dual DVI and VIVO have finally hit retail. The higher-end X850 XT PE is clocked at 540 MHz and uses 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 1,180 MHz. Numbers for the X850 XT model are 520 MHz and 1,080 MHz. Both PCI Express cards have 16 pixel pipelines and 256-bit memory interface. The retail package may include an optional Platinum Pack with Dungeon Siege, Counter Strike and ARX Fatalis.

Elpida reduces DRAM power consumption

Memory Elpida has shipped the first samples of its 256 Mb DDR SDRAM products with Super Self Refresh (SSR) technology that is said to reduce self refresh current by up to 95%. In doing so, it is capable of extending battery life for portable consumer electronics with no trade off in performance. Elpida’s new devices with SSR are organized as 4 M x 16 bits x 4 banks and are rated to run at 400 MHz with various latency settings. The DRAMs have typical DDR SDRAM voltage of 2.5 V, but Elpida says that SSR adjusts the current rate using Auto Temperature Compensated Self Refresh (ATCSR) in order to reduce power consumption. Volume production is planned for March.

Point of View has PCI-E GeForce 6800

Video Dutch company Point of View is one of the first VGA card makers to launch a GeForce 6800 with PCI Express interface. The GeForce 6800 Ultra PCX is clocked at 425 MHz and features 16 pixel pipelines, 256-bit interface and 256 MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.1 GHz. It includes two DVI-I and one TV-Out connectors. Simultaneous use of multiple cards is supported through SLI. The company will release a GT PCI Express model soon.

Micron sets new FB-DIMM milestone

Micron allegedly reached a new milestone in the development of FB-DIMM memory modules with DDR2 prototypes running at 667 MHz (PC5300) aimed at future servers. The company has a complete lineup of DDR2 FB-DIMM modules with densities from 256 MB to 2 GB. In FB-DIMM products, all signals to and from the DRAM are buffered at the high-speed Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB), allowing better timings.

AMD announces new mobile chip

CPU AMD announced it will come out with a new energy-efficient mobile processor called Turion 64 in the first half of this year. The company stated that the chip – based on its AMD64 architecture – will provide notebooks with longer battery life, wireless compatibility, rich graphics and enhanced security, but didn’t mention specific chipsets or wireless chips. According to AMD, the move will not interfere with the Mobile Athlon 64 and Mobile Sempron product lines.

Flash card with USB connectivity

Memory SanDisk introduced a new Secure Digital memory card with built-in USB connectivity. The device can be plugged into any USB port without needing an SD card reader to transfer data, images, audio or video between computers, digital cameras and other gadgets. The card, to be commercially available in February, has a led that blinks when data transfer is taking place to indicate that it is being used as a USB flash drive.

AMD promotes holographic label

AMD is promoting its new holographic label as a way to ensure authenticity os its Processor-in-a-Box products. Last week, AMD aknowledged that a number of discarded K7 and K8 processors was found in ilegal possession of taiwanese companies. According to at least one report, police seized 60,000 remarked chips in a single company. Some remarked processors could have reached European and Asian markets. AMDīs new holographic label is based on Dupont Izon technology.
