Storage Samsung has introduced a series of Serial ATA II hard drives: the 80 GB HD080HJ (USD 93), the 120GB HD120IJ (USD 120) and the 160GB HD160JJ (USD 150). All three feature 7,200 rpm spindle speed, 8.9 millisecond average seek time and 8 MB cache buffer. Samsung’s proprietary NoiseGuard and SilentSeek technologies promise extremely low noise levels. The Serial ATA II standard supports native 3 Gbps transfer rates and Native Command Queuing (NCQ).

Meshx panels and fanguards from AC Ryan

Case AC Ryan has launched a series of stainless steel panels and fanguards called Meshx for modding PC cases. The MeshxPanels measure 500x500 mm and offer a variety of possible uses – from small strips to whole side windows. The 0.8 mm thick Meshx FanGuards are sold in 80 mm, 92 mm and 120 mm formats. Both products are available in silver and black.

ASUS has officially launched its P5WD2 Premium motherboard, based on the i955X chipset, aimed at socket 775 dual-core Pentium processors. The board supports 1066 MHz FSB, PCI Express, Serial ATA II, dual-channel DDR2, Intel Matrix Storage RAID and 8-channel high-definition audio. The optional bundle includes a WiFi-TV PCI card.

Single-chip PCI-E WLAN solutions from Atheros

LAN Atheros has announced what it claims are the first complete single-chip IEEE 802.11a/g (AR5006EX) and 802.11g (AR5006EG) WLAN solutions with support for PCI Express. The parts integrate an entire WLAN solution-media access controller (MAC), baseband processor and a high-performance 2.4/5-GHz radio or 2.4-GHz radio in a low-cost digital CMOS design. The AR5006EX and AR5006EG enable the entire WLAN solution to fit on a single-sided mini card or ExpressCard. The chips are expected to reach volume production in the third quarter.

S3 sells GammaChrome card online

Video VIA’s graphics joint-venture company, S3, is trying to get back in the North American market. The company has begun selling the PCI Express GammaChromeS18 Pro card supporting DirectX 9 and HDTV to american users through its online GStore. Manufacture of the card is done internally and by third partners. More products are expected to be added to the virtual store over the year.

New DDR2 modules for gamers from OCZ

Memory OCZ has introduced a new Gold Series of DDR2 modules specifically designed for gamers. It includes 533 MHz, 667 MHz and 800 MHz parts with extremely low latencies – 3-3-3-8, 4-4-4-8 and 5-5-5-8, respectively – thanks to its Enhanced Latency Technology. The memories run at 1.8 volt (tolerating up to 2.2 volts) and include gold mirrored copper heatspreaders. They are available in 512 MB and 1 GB modules or 1 GB and 2 GB dual channel kits.

Radeon Xpress 200M for Intel notebooks

Motherboard ATI has released a new version of its Radeon Xpress 200M aimed at Intel-based notebooks. Featuring on-board DirectX 9 graphics, the chipset supports DDR2-667 memory and offers power management tools through Powerplay 5.0, including a new function called Dynamic Lane Count Switching (DLCS), which can reduce GPU power consumption by up to 30%, according to the company. NEC, ASUS, Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Mitac and LG are among vendors which will sell systems based on the Radeon Xpress 200M.

Dual-core Opteron available, Athlon 64 X2 near

CPU AMD launched today its first bunch of dual-core processors. As expected, the Opteron 800 series, aimed at four to eight-way servers, got three new models: the 2.2 GHz 875, the 2 GHz 870 and the 1.8 GHz 865. These are priced at USD 2,649, USD 2,149 and USD 1,514, respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities. Dual-core Opteron 200, for servers with two processors, will be available in May. AMD has also announced that the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 chips will be released ahead of schedule in June. There will be initially four models: the 4800+, clocked at 2.4 GHz and featuring two 1 MB L2 caches; the 4600+ (2.4 GHz and 2 x 512 KB L2); the 4400+ (2.2 GHz and 2 x 1 MB L2); and the 4200+ (2.2 GHz and 2 x 512 KB L2). Prices will range from USD 581 to USD 1,001.

Elpida starts DDR2 production at 90 nm

Memory Japanese memory maker Elpida announced today that it has started production of DDR2 SDRAM using a 90 nanometer process technology at its Hiroshima facility. The change from the current 100 nm tech is expected to reduce production costs and thus lead to more affordable DDR2 512 Mb parts. Samples are to be available in June and volume production could happen as early as the third quarter.

Gigabyte has announced its first i955X-based motherboard aimed at socket 775 dual-core Pentium processors. The GA-8I955X Royal has all the features offered by the new Intel chipset such as 1066 MHz FSB, PCI Express, Serial ATA II, dual-channel DDR2, Intel Matrix Storage and 8-channel high-definition audio. The Gigabyte board is also said to support memory speeds of up to 888 MHz and comes with a GN-BDT02 Bluetooth USB adapter. The complete specifications are:

Intel announces PRO/Wireless WiMAX chip

LAN Intel has announced the availability of its first WiMAX chip, the PRO/Wireless 5116, providing equipment manufacturers and carriers a new option to deliver next-generation wireless broadband networks. According to the company, equipments for homes and offices such as modems and gateways based on the 5116 will cost around USD 200, instead of the current average of USD 500. WiMAX (802.16) allows transfer rates of up to 70 Mbps. The system-on-a-chip PRO/Wireless 5116, previously known as Rosendale, includes 802.16 MAC and OFDM PHY, an integrated Ethernet 10/100 MAC, inline security processing and TDM controller interface for streaming applications.

Companies start selling dual-core PCs

CPU Intel confirmed today that three companies – Alienware, Dell and Velocity Micro – have started selling dual-core processor-based PCs aimed at gamers and enthusiasts. These feature the 3.2 GHz Pentium Extreme Edition 840 and the i955X Express chipset. The announcement does not mean that users can immediately receive a dual-core system, but that they are able to order them. For instance Velocity Micro´s ProMagix DCX starting from USD 2965 is expected to ship only on May 2.

Gigabyte has also released a motherboard based on the i915PL chipset, a low-end member of the i915 series, supporting only DDR memory. The other features are identical to those of the i915P model, including 800 MHz FSB, PCI Express interface and 8-channel on-board audio.
