SiS licenses Intel´s 1066 MHz FSB

Motherboard SiS has signed a licensing agreement with Intel that will allow the company to manufacture Pentium 4 chipsets supporting 1066 MHz FSB. New versions of its 656 and 670 parts, though, will not be available until the second half of the year. The SiS656 is a PCI Express chipset currently supporting 800 MHz FSB and dual-channel DDR2-667 memory. The 656FX, with 1066 MHz FSB, will be sampled in the second quarter and enter mass production a quarter later. The 670 chipset, sporting Mirage3 DirectX 9-compatible integrated graphics, will only begin sampling in the third quarter.

USB to SATA bridge chip from Oxford

Bus Oxford Semiconductor released a USB to SATA bridge chip that promises to simplify implementation of external hard drives and optical drives for PCs and Macs. The OXU921S chip is a 128-pin device with integrated SATA PHY, USB 2.0 PHY and ARM7 TDMI processor. The firmware allows compatibility with standard operating system drivers. The USB 2.0 link and PHY support full and high speed modes as well as backward compatibility with USB 1.1. Data transmission speed reaches 480 Mb/s and disk interface data rate is 150 MB/s.

BenQ also announces LightScribe burner

Storage BenQ will soon release in the European market a DVD burner sporting HP's LightScribe technology. It basically allows users to burn labels directly on specially designed discs with a thin dye coating. The DW1625 DVD ReWriter offers performance similar to HP´s recently released 640i, writing dual-layer DVD+Rs at up to 2.4x, single-layer DVD+Rs at up to 16x and CD-Rs at up to 40x. Suggested retail price is Euro 99.

SanDisk announces 1 GB miniSD card

SanDisk has announced a 1 GB miniSD memory card that will sell for USD 99.99. This means that 1 MB of storage will cost USD 0.10 compared to about USD 1.13 one year ago. The miniSD card measures 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.05 inches and is bundled with an adaptor for use in standard SD devices. It will be available in retail only in the second quarter.

Intel also announced a bunch of new products on the server front. It consists of four “Irwindale” Xeon for dual processor systems and workstations sporting 2 MB of L2 cache. The 64-bit chips – supporting 800 MHz FSB and DDR2-400 memory – are clocked at 3 GHz, 3.2 GHz, 3.4 GHz and 3.6 GHz and are priced at USD 316, USD 455, USD 690 and USD 851 in 1,000-unit quantities.

AMD announces 2.6 GHz Opterons

CPU AMD announced today three new Opteron processors clocked at 2.6 GHz with 1 GHz HyperTransport bus. The chips also include new features like SSE3 and PowerNow! Support. The 152, 252 and 852 are priced at USD 637, USD 851 and USD 1,514, respectively (in 1,000-unit quantities). The two and four-to-eight-way models will be shipping in 30 days, while the 152 will not be available until the end of April. These are the first 90 nm Opterons based on a completely revised core.

GeCube ships high-end Uni-Wise cards

Video GeCube started to ship new PCI Express cards based on the Radeon X850 XT and X800 XL chips as part of its Uni-Wise series. This line features a single slot fan promising noise level under 20 dB and a copper heatsink with heatpipe technology. The GC-RX850XTS-VIVO is clocked at 540 MHz and features 16 pixel pipelines, 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 1.18 GHz and VGA, DVI, HDTV-Out and VIVO connectors. The GC-RX800XL-D3 256MB is clocked at 400 MHz and also sports 16 pixel pipelines and 256 MB of GDDR3 (at 1 GHz), but lacks VIVO funcionality.

HP releases LightScribe DVD burner

Storage HP released its first DVD burner with LightScribe technology allowing users to burn labels directly on the disc. The feature, which requires compatible media with a thin dye coating, was previously available only pre-installed in HP PCs. With LightScribe, the user records data first and then turn the disc to let the driver´s laser etch images and text on its surface. The DVD Writer 640i offers common performance writing dual-layer DVDs at up to 2.4x, single-layer DVDs at up to 16x and CDs at up to 40x. It is sold for USD 129.99.

ASUS has launched a new motherboard based on the i915PL, a low-end version of the Grantsdale chipset, supporting only DDR memory. NETGEAR announces MIMO products

LAN NETGEAR has announced two new wireless products based on Airgo´s True MIMO technology. The MIMO G Wireless Router (WGM124) and Wireless PC Card (WGM511) promise up to eight times the speed and coverage of standard 802.11g devices. The router has three MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) antennas and comes with NETGEAR’s Smart Wizard for easy set-up with automatic detection and connection to an Internet service provider. It offers a double firewall with Network Address Translation (NAT) and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), along with Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) 64, 128–bit encryption and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA, Pre-Shared Key). The products will be available this month in Japan and soon in the USA.

Companies ready 8 Gb NAND flash chip

Memory Toshiba and SanDisk announced an 8 Gb NAND flash memory chip fabricated with 70-nanometer process technology that will allow the production of greater-capacity devices such as USB drives and MP3 players. The new flash memory utilizes multi-level cell (MLC) tech to store two bits of information in a single memory cell. According to the companies, the 8 Gb chip supports write speeds of up to 6 MB/s and read speeds of up to 60 MB/s, 40% faster than the previous generation. Production will start only in the summer.

Nvidia has completed its GeForce Go 6 series with the mid-range Go 6600 GPU. The PCI Express chip is available in standard (clocked at 375 MHz with memory at 600 MHz) and Ultra versions (450/700 MHz). They have eight pixel pipelines and 128-bit memory interface while consuming 18 watts and 26.5 watts respectively. Companies like AOpen, ASUS, Clevo, MSI and Toshiba will market notebooks featuring the GeForce Go 6600.

IBM, Sony and Toshiba have disclosed more information about the future Cell processor. It will be comprised of a 64-bit Power processor and eight synergistic processor cores capable of massive floating point processing. A prototype presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, in San Francisco, integrated 234 million transistors with 90 nanometer SOI technology, but it is expected to be fabricated with 65 nm tech. Dubbed a “supercomputer on a chip”, the Cell will likely reach 4.6 GHz when it is available, in enterprise kits and inside Sony´s PlayStation 3.

Gigabyte has released a new top of the line PCI Express card, the GV-RX85X256V-B, based on the Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition GPU. The card, clocked at 540 MHz, features 16 pixel pipelines and processes up to 810 M vertices/sec with 6 vertex pipelines. It packs 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 1.18 GHz. The GV-RX85X256V-B supports HDTV resolutions up to 2048x1536 dpi and includes Dual DVI, VIVO and HDTV-Out connectors. The retail package includes three games: Joint Operations, Thief and SpellForce.

Memory GeIL released a new Ultra series of DDR2-533 memories with agressive 3-3-3-8 timings. The modules operate at 1.95 volts and use special low-noise 6-layer PCBs. Products are available in 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB modules and 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB dual channel kits with aluminum heatspreaders. The company is currently shipping limited quantities.
