Intel announces PRO/Wireless WiMAX chip

LAN Intel has announced the availability of its first WiMAX chip, the PRO/Wireless 5116, providing equipment manufacturers and carriers a new option to deliver next-generation wireless broadband networks. According to the company, equipments for homes and offices such as modems and gateways based on the 5116 will cost around USD 200, instead of the current average of USD 500. WiMAX (802.16) allows transfer rates of up to 70 Mbps. The system-on-a-chip PRO/Wireless 5116, previously known as Rosendale, includes 802.16 MAC and OFDM PHY, an integrated Ethernet 10/100 MAC, inline security processing and TDM controller interface for streaming applications.

Tul launches PowerColor Bravo X700

Video Tul has launched a new Radeon X700 card featuring two distinctive characteristics when compared to products based on the same chip: 128-bit dual-channel GDDR2 memory clocked at 532 MHz and the Silent Cooling System (SCS) heat-pipe solution. The PowerColor Bravo X700 is clocked at 400 MHz and sports eight pixel pipelines, 256 MB of memory and VGA, Dual-DVI and TV-Out connectors. Suggested retail price is USD 160.

Companies start selling dual-core PCs

CPU Intel confirmed today that three companies – Alienware, Dell and Velocity Micro – have started selling dual-core processor-based PCs aimed at gamers and enthusiasts. These feature the 3.2 GHz Pentium Extreme Edition 840 and the i955X Express chipset. The announcement does not mean that users can immediately receive a dual-core system, but that they are able to order them. For instance Velocity Micro´s ProMagix DCX starting from USD 2965 is expected to ship only on May 2.

Gigabyte has also released a motherboard based on the i915PL chipset, a low-end member of the i915 series, supporting only DDR memory. The other features are identical to those of the i915P model, including 800 MHz FSB, PCI Express interface and 8-channel on-board audio. The GA-8I915PL-G sports overclocking tools such as CPU Intelligent Accelerator 2 (CIA 2) and Memory Intelligent Booster 2 (MIB 2). The package includes the Norton Security 2005 suite. ULi unveils combo PCI-E and AGP chipset

Motherboard ULi has unveiled its M1695 chipset supporting socket 754, 939 and 940 Athlon 64 processors. The highlight is what the company calls Triple Graphics Interface (TGi) or simply simultaneous PCI Express x16, AGP 8x (provided by the M1567 south bridge) and PCI graphics interfaces. The PCI-E x16 can be divided into two PCI-E x8 lanes to support multiple VGA cards.

AMD releases Mobile Athlon 64 3700+

CPU AMD released a new Mobile Athlon 64, the 3700+, for full-size notebooks. The chip, clocked at 2.4 GHz and featuring 1 MB of L2 cache, supports the Enhanced Virus Protection (EVP) security feature enabled by Windows XP SP2. The 3700+ also supports 3D Now!, PowerNow!, SSE3 and 802.11a/b/g connectivity. It is priced at USD 336 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Microsoft will launch Xbox 2 on MTV

Microsoft will reveal details about the long awaited Xbox 2 on a 30-minute special to be aired on MTV on May 12 (9:30 PM ET). The show will also be broadcast in Europe, Asia and Australia on May 13. The public expects to get more information about the video game such as release dates, processor specifications and whether it will include a hard drive. Most analysts believe the next generation Xbox, which is expected to reach stores in the second half of this year before its rival PlaySation 3, will cost around USD 299.

XGI demonstrates XG47 graphics card

Video XGI technology demonstrated its first PCI Express card, based on the XG47 GPU, this week during IDF Taiwan. It will be sold by partners and XGI itself under the Volari brand. The 130 nm XG47 chip is an entry-level product sporting DirectX 9.0 and Shader 2.0 compatibility. It includes a technology called eXtreme Cache that, just like Nvidia’s TurboCache and ATI’s HyperMemory, offers the capability of sharing the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated video memory and dynamically available system memory. Video features include integrated TV encoder, DVI output up to 2048 x 1536, 3:2 pull-down for movies and LCD overdrive.

Intel brings forward dual-core release

CPU Taiwanese site DigiTimes reports, citing motherboard makers, that Intel will launch the dual-core Pentium Extreme Edition 840 (clocked at 3.2 GHz) and the i955X chipset in the coming days. Both products were slated to come up in the end of the current trimester. The Pentium EE 840 will be priced at USD 999 in 1,000-unit quantities and boards based on the i955X will probably cost around USD 200. Other dual-core chips and compatible chipsets are still set to be launched until June.

Sony introduces NW-HD5 MP3 player

Sony has introduced a new HD-based MP3 player promising 40 hours of play on a single battery charge. The 20 GB NW-HD5 is also smaller than its predecessors measuring 2.4 x 3.5 x 0.6 inches (59.9 x 89.3 x 14.5mm) and weighing 4.8 ounces (125 grams). Besides MP3, the player supports Sony's ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus, Windows Media Audio and WAV files. Charging the battery takes three hours via AC and six hours via USB. The NW-HD5 will start selling for approximatelly USD 327 in Japan later this month and worldwide availability is planned.

Memory Corsair today added to the DDR2 clock-speed competition announcing a XMS2 part rated at 800 MHz. Optmized for nForce4 SLI Intel Edition boards, the XMS2 6400 memory has 5-5-5-12 latencies and is available in 512 MB modules (CM2X512A-6400) and 1 GB dual channel kits (TWIN2X1024A-6400), featuring black cast aluminum heatspreaders. Yesterday Kingston claimed to have started shipping the “fastest DDR2 part” in the market clocked at 750 MHz.

ASUS has launched its first nForce4 SLI Intel Edition board: the P5ND2-SLI Deluxe. The new nVidia chipset aimed at socket 775 processors, announced earlier this week, sports support for multiple graphic cards, 1066 MHz frontside bus, dual channel DDR2-667 memory and Serial ATA II with RAID 5. The P5ND2-SLI Deluxe adds support for DDR-720 memory, a fanless design to conduct heat away without noise and a bunch of proprietary overclocking technologies.

Kingston unveils 750 MHz DDR2 modules

Memory Kingston claims to have started shipping the “fastest DDR2 part” in the market clocked at 750 MHz. In addition, the company says the new HyperX 750-MHz PC2-6000 has reached 866 MHz in lab tests. Modules have been tested to run at low latency timings of 4-4-4-12-1, but actual speeds will depend on system configuration. Memories are available in 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB modules and 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB dual channel kits. Prices range from USD 127 to USD 569. Quantities are currently limited.
