Video Nvidia released a beta version of ForceWare 77.76. The new set of drivers offers support for SLI on upcoming GeForce 6600 LE cards and a new 16x antialiasing SLI rendering mode. Other features include broader SLI optimizations for more than 100 games and Unified Driver Architecture (UDA) with support for seven different operating systems and more than 250 products in total.

NEC router bridges WLAN and 3G

LAN NEC has developed a mobile router that enables seamless broadband communication from high-speed vehicles such as train and cars through the employment of wireless LAN and 3G networks. In practice, this would allow a person inside a car to connect a notebook to both WLAN access points and 3G base stations when travelling at up to 124 miles per hour. NEC said though that actual products using the technology will not be available for a few years.

Cornice adds 4 GB Storage Element HD

Storage Cornice announced a new 4 GB model as part of its 1-inch Storage Element HD line. The drive, designed to be used in MP3 players, cell phones, personal video recorders and other devices, is said to sustain 1.5 meter drops onto concrete with properly designed enclosure. Average transfer time of the 4,400 rpm unit is 5.5 Mb/s. The 4 GB Storage Element will cost OEMs USD 65 in 10,000-unit quantities.

ATI offers rebate to promote CrossFire

Video According to Xbit Labs, ATI rolled-out a campaign to boost multi-GPU CrossFire technology. As part of the promotion, the company will offer a USD 100 rebate for customers who purchase a Radeon X800/X850 series product, register it and get an e-coupon, then buy a Radeon CrossFire Edition graphics card by September 29 and mail in the completed e-coupon and the UPC code from the latter. ATI promises to send the USD 100 check within eight weeks of receiving the codes.

Intel releases 667 MHz FSB Itanium 2

CPU Intel has released its first Itanium 2 processors with 667 MHz front side bus. The upgrade will move system bandwidth from 6.4 Gbps to 10.6 Gbps. The 667 MHz FSB Itanium 2 clocked at 1.66 GHz with 9 MB of cache is available for USD 4,655 in 1,000-unit quantities, while the 1.66 GHz model with 6 MB cache costs USD 2,194. These should be the last Itanium 2 chips before Intel launches dual-core Montecito processors in the fourth quarter.

Sunbeam releases screws with leds

Case PC mod specialist Sunbeam has released a line of fan fixing screws with built-in leds. Installation consists of passing the wires through the holes on the fan and plugging the 2-pin connectors to the wire harness of the power wire. The screws, which sport chrome anodized finish, are available with red, blue and green leds.

OCZ releases DDR600 Elite Edition

OCZ has launched a DDR600 memory utilizing TCCD chips from Samsung. The DDR PC-4800 Platinum Elite Edition (EE) will run at 400 MHz with 2-2-2-5 timings and at 600 MHz with 2.5-4-4-10. The company guarantees the modules, which have mirrored platinum copper heatspreaders, to handle up to 3 volts without invalidating its warranty. The new memory is available only in 1 GB dual channel kits (2 x 512 MB).

LCD changes image with viewing angle

Video Sharp has developed an LCD panel that can simultaneously display different images depending on the viewing angle. The effect is achieved through a number of proprietary technologies such as a parallax barrier superimposed on an ordinary TFT LCD. The company believes that such displays will be useful on ATMs and laptop computers to prevent other people from reading what is on the screen. Volume production will begin this month, but there is no information yet on prices or availability.

Video Matrox has announced a peculiar graphic card featuring PCI Express x1 interface. The product, according to the company, is the first of its kind. The Millennium G550, aimed at financial and corporate users, is equipped with only 32 MB of DDR memory and two pixel pipelines, but offer support for two digital or analogue displays. It will be available in August for USD 139.

SanDisk intros 512 MB microSD card

Memory SanDisk claims to be the first company to offer a 512 MB microSD card. The format, aimed at mobile phones and devices, has been officially adopted by the SD Card Association (SDA). The company also released a 256 MB version and expects to launch a 1 GB card by the end of the year and a 2 GB one in 2006. The 512 MB microSD, to be available in August, will sell for USD 70, while the 256 MB is priced at USD 45.

Microsoft has announced that it will release its Remote Keyboard for Windows XP Media Center Edition in September. The device combines keyboard, remote control and mouse pointer, allowing users to send instant messages, view images and control a TV, among other functions. It includes a Media Center green button, backlit keys and a Key-Lock, which avoids triggering an application by accident. The Remote Keyboard will sell for UDS 104.95.

Regulators raid Intel European offices

CPU Officials from the European Commision this Tuesday raided offices of Intel and a number of other companies, such as Dell, as part of an antitrust investigation into the chip company practices. Inspections were carried out in Madrid (Spain), Milan (Italy), Munich (Germany) and Swindon (England). AMD has repeatedly complained to European regulators about Intel’s supposed malpractices to coerce computer makers and retailers to avoid selling and marketing its rivals products. Intel declared that it is fully cooperating with investigators.

HP unveils new printhead technology

Printer HP has unveiled its first products featuring an inkjet technology that promises a faster development cycle and consequent lower cost (up to 50%). The new printhead components are fabricated as a single unit through a photolitographic process instead of being welded togheter in postproduction. This allows the placement of 3,900 nozzles or even more on a single printhead. The first product to sport the technology will be the Photosmart 8250. Equipped with six Vivera ink cartridges, it will print 4x6-inch prints in as little as 14 seconds. The 8250 will be available this month for USD 199. It will be followed this fall by the Photosmart 3000 All-In-One series.

Gigabyte ships dual GeForce 6800 GT

Gigabyte finally launched its new dual GPU card featuring two GeForce 6800 GT chips. The GV-3D1-68GT is said to reach a score of almost 10,000 in 3DMark05. It includes a total of 32 pixel pipelines and 512 MB of GDDR3 memory. Despite its huge heatsink, the card is guaranteed to fit in any normal ATX case. The GV-3D1-68GT is equipped with dual DVI-I, TV-Out and D-Sub output and comes bundled with PowerDVD 6.0, Joint Operations and Xpand Rally.

Intel releases Pentium D server platform

CPU Intel has released its first ever server platform based on dual-core processors. The Pentium D is paired with the new E7230 chipset, previously known as Mukilteo, supporting 64-bit OSes, 1.066 MHz FSB, up to 8 GB of DDR2-667 memory, PCI Express interface and Serial ATA RAID. The Pentium D platform is aimed at entry-level servers. Dual-core Itaniums will ship later this year, while dual-core Xeons are not expected before 2006.
