Video Gigabyte has launched a GeForce 7800 GTX Turbo Force Edition featuring T3 performance tuning and V-Tuner II overclocking tools. According to the company, it scores 17,282 in the 3DMark03 benchmark, compared to 16,123 of a standard GeForce 7800 GTX. The chip has 24 pixel pipelines and eight vertex shaders. The new GV-NX78T256VP-B includes VGA, DVI-I and VIVO (with HDTV-Out) connectors. Full-version bundles Joint Operations and Xpand Rally.

AMD releases Mobile Athlon 64 4000+

CPU AMD has released a new high-end Mobile Athlon 64 aimed at desktop replacement notebooks. The 4000+ is clocked at 2.6 GHz and brings 1 MB of L2 cache. Thermal design power (TDP) is 62 W. The chips, which will be featured in products from companies such as Fujitsu, costs USD 382 in 1,000-unit quantities. AMD has also announced availability of powerful mobile systems based on the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 and the Athlon 64 FX-57 from VoodooPC.

Toshiba first to ship perpendicular HD

Storage Toshiba claims to be the first company to commercially release HDs based on perpendicular recording. The 1.8-inch MK4007GAL, now shipping in the manufacturer’s Gigabeat F41 MP3 player, packs 40 GB in a single platter. The new technology, which involves vertical alignment of data on the plane of the disk and therefore takes less room in comparison to the horizontal orientation of longitudinal recording, allows densities of up to 133 Gb per square inch. Toshiba plans to also use perpendicular technology in its 0.85-inch HDs starting in 2006.

Dual-core Xeon will arrive this year

CPU Intel has announced that it will release the dual-core Xeon ahead of schedule. Previously expected to launch in early 2006, the Xeon MP codenamed Paxville will be introduced later this year, along with a lower-end version aimed at dual-processor servers. The 64-bit chips will support Hyper-Threading, Execute Disable and Demand Based Switching, among other technologies. Paxville MP will use the E8500 chipset while the DP version will be paired with the E7520.

AMD and IBM renew partnership

CPU AMD and IBM have reportedly agreed to maintain a development alliance until 2011. The arrangement involves cooperation in 32 and 22-nm chip fabrication processes and a series of technologies related to transistors, interconnects, lithography and processor packaging. The partnership between the companies began in 2002 when IBM joined AMD to help in the latter’s silicon-on-insulator manufacturing technique.

Memory A-Data has launched new 214-pin DDR2-533 Micro DIMM memory modules for mini-notebooks. The format, based on Intel’s Sonoma platform, is smaller than traditional 200-pin SO-DIMM, occupying about 65% of its size. The modules, available in 256 MB and 512 MB capacities, operate at a CAS latency of 5 and at 1.8 volt.

Single chip for HD DVD, DVD and CD

Storage Sanyo Electric has developed a signal processing LSI compatible with playback and recording of HD DVDs, current DVDs and CDs. The company says the chips will bring lower costs and reduce the size of HD DVD drives and HD DVD player hardware. Sanyo plans to release the component in the second quarter of 2006. HD DVD is currently battling Blu-ray to replace the DVD standard.

Logitech unveils 2,000 dpi gaming mice

Logitech will start selling in September two new gaming mice capable of resolutions of up to 2,000 dpi. Both the laser G5 and the cordless G7 handle 6.4 megapixels of image processing per second and sport full-speed bi-directional USB connection which delivers 500 reports per second. The G5 is packaged with adjustable weight cartridges to give users better control. The G7 features a five level power indicator and twin hot-swappable Li-ion batteries. Suggested retail prices are, respectively, USD 70 and USD 100. Logitech will also release in October the G15, a gamer keyboard, including built-in auxiliary LCD display, 18 programmable keys and advanced software to set up custom commands. The device will be priced at USD 80.

Nvidia launches GeForce 7800 GT

Video Nvidia has officially launched the second coming of its GeForce 7800 graphics chip. The GT model features 20 pixel pipelines and seven vertex engines against 24 and eight from the GTX released in June. Clock speeds – 400 MHz with GDDR3 memory running at 1 GHz – are also lower. However users should be attracted by the USD 450 price tag, considerably below the GTX’s USD 600, while still outperforming the GeForce 6800 Ultra. Several makers are already offering GeForce 7800 GT cards.

Samsung has unveiled three new high-definition plasma TVs with 42, 50 and 63-inch screens. All models are designed in a slim black casing less than 4 inches deep and feature built-in a two-way audio system comprising ten speakers. The TVs are able to display up to 549 billion colors with 10,000:1 constrast ratio. Horizontal and vertical viewing angles are 175 degrees. Retail prices are USD 4,200, USD 5,700 and USD 13,000.

Logitech speakers for mobile music

Audio Logitech released two new speaker systems designed for portable music players. The mm50, customized for Apple’s iPod, offers exclusive features, a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery said to last 10 hours per charge and a remote control. Max-X high-excursion drivers and three inch pressure drivers promise fully balanced audio, maximum bass response and minimal distortion. It will be available in September with a suggested retail price of USD 150. The Logitech mm28, in its turn, can be used with any MP3 or CD player equipped with a 3.5 mm audio jack. The speakers use NXT flat-panel technology and are said to run for 45 hours on a single set of AA batteries. Suggested price is USD 80.

Creative intros X-Fi sound card

Audio Creative will start selling later this month a new series of Sound Blaster sound cards called X-Fi. Based on the X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity audio processor, which is capable of 10,000+ MIPS, the products achieve up to 116 dB SNR (in the Elite Pro model). The X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS, named after professional gamer Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel, provides 109 dB quality and includes 64 MB of on-board X-RAM for high performance gaming. All cards utilize Sound Blaster’s 24-bit Crystalizer and CMSS-3D technologies. Prices range from USD 200 (XtremeMusic) to USD 400 (Elite Pro).

HIS ships overclocked Radeon X800 GT

HIS has launched a whole series of VGA cards based on the new Radeon X800 GT. The top of the line is the X800GT IceQ II Turbo 256MB PCIe capable of reaching 500 MHz (core) and 1 GHz (memory) through its iTurbo technology. It is also equipped with IceQ cooler featuring blue UV sensitive casing and promising noise level below 20 dB. The Radeon X800 GT has eight pixel pipelines, six vertex shaders pipelines and 256-bit interface. HIS’ card includes VGA, DVI and HDTV-Out connectors.

Club-3D has launched one of the first cards based on the GeForce 6600 LE. The SLI chip is the cheapest option available to users considering upgrading later to a dual GPU system. Club-3D’s card is clocked at 300 MHz and is equipped with 256 MB of memory running at 500 MHz. It includes VGA, DVI and HDTV-Out connectors.
