EPoX has launched an nForce4 motherboard supposed to be the industry’s first aimed at socket 754 AMD processors supporting Nvidia’s SLI technology. It has two PCI Express x16 slots that work as x8 when SLI mode is activated. The EP-8NPA SLi is an accessible upgrade option to users willing to put a cheaper SLI system together. The board also includes Thunder Probe hardware monitoring and Magic Flash BIOS update tools.

Qualcomm integrates WLAN into phones

LAN Qualcomm has announced that its Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets will support Philips' WLAN module. The integrated solution will offer connectivity to WLAN as well as to existing cellular networks and will feature compatibility with 802.11b and 802.11g protocols on both CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS). The module allows mobile handsets to use high-speed wireless local area networks for connections of up to 54 Mb/s. Initially supported on the MSM6550 chipset, the 802.11b/g-compatible broadband capabilities enabled by Philips' solution are scheduled to be commercially available by the end of the year.

TwinMOS announces 140x 4 GB CF card

Memory TwinMOS has announced a new 140x 4 GB CompactFlash Card in its Ultra-X series capable of reading at 21 MB/s and writing at 16.2 MB/s. The dual channel device is aimed at professional DSC and DV. The 4 GB card is already in mass production and the company plans to release an 8 GB version soon. Pricing details were not released.

Sun releases UltraSPARC IV+ processor

CPU Sun Microsystems has upgraded its UltraSPARC family after a year and a half with the release of the IV+ model. The new 1.5 GHz processor is fabbed at 90-nanometer and integrates 2 MB of L2 cache. There is also an off-chip 32 MB L3 cache. The UltraSPARC IV+ will be initially featured in four to 24-way Fire servers running Solaris 10 with prices starting at USD 30.995.

30 GB dual-layer HD DVD wins approval

Storage The DVD Forum has approved a new 30 GB dual-layer recordable HD DVD-R disc submitted by Toshiba. The company plans to complete a new version of it (2.0) until the end of the year and bring a compatible recorder to market by next spring. Toshiba is the main backer of HD DVD, which is still in the midst of a battle with Blu-ray to replace current DVD video disc format.

Nvidia reveals GeForce 6100 and 6150

Motherboard Nvidia has announced its new chipsets aimed at socket 939 AMD processors sporting GeForce 6200 TurboCache-based integrated graphics. The products are oddly called GeForce 6100 and 6150. Both feature a PCI Express x16 slot to plug a video card. The 6100 has a slightly lower clock and lacks support for some video features. The new chipsets are paired with two possible south bridges. The nForce 430 supports four Serial ATA ports, RAID 5, eight USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, eight-channel audio, Gigabit Ethernet and firewall. The nForce 410 offers only two SATA ports, RAID 0, 1, Ethernet 10/100 and no firewall.

CE Dell has officially introduced the DJ Ditty, its first flash-based audio player, weighing only 1.29 ounce and measuring 3.6x1.1x0.5 inches. With 512 MB of storage capacity, the device has a 1x0.4 inch LCD screen and integrates FM tuner. The rechargeable lithium polymer battery promises up to 14 hours of continuous play. The pack includes earbuds, lanyard and black-and-blue USB cap. Suggested price is USD 99.

Gigabyte releases G-Power Lite cooler

Cooling Gigabyte has added a “Lite” version to its G-Power CPU cooler series. The device features a pure copper base, three heatpipes and a linear speed controller that allows users to manually switch beween 2,000 and 2,450 rpm. The cooler weighs only 430 g and is compatible with all socket 478 and 775 Intel processors as well as AMD K8 through an universal bracket. The G-Power Lite sports a new white and blue design free from leds.

Memorex announces 4 GB USB drive

Memory Memorex last week announced what it claims to be the smallest USB drive in the world. The Mega TravelDrive, to be available in October, offers 4 GB of capacity while measuring just 1.75x1.96x0.56 inches. It has a blue led indicator and a pivoting USB connector. The package includes a black carryng pouch and a USB cable. Suggested retail price is USD 150.

Nintendo presented the last unknown piece of its next-generation Revolution console – and it is a quite revolutionary one. President Satoru Iwata introduced during this week's Tokyo Game Show a new one-handed controller equipped with motion detection sensors that can act as a virtual sword or baseball bat. It looks like a small TV remote and includes a traditional directional pad and several other buttons. An expansion port allows users to plug traditional two-handed controllers or joysticks. The Revolution is expected to launch in 2006.

Sapphire launches three X800 GTO cards

Video Sapphire has launched three VGA cards based on the new Radeon X800 GTO, featuring 12 pixel pipelines, but clocked at a lower 400 MHz in comparison to the X800 GT (475 MHz). The basic version brings 128 MB of DDR memory at 700 MHz overclockable to 760 MHz with the company’s Trixx proprietary tool. The X800GTO Ultimate, which sports a new heatpipe cooling system, packs 256 MB of GDDR3 at 980 MHz and is capable of reaching 520 MHz (core) and 1 GHz (memory). Finally, the X800GT Fireblade Edition uses a dual slot fan cooler venting outside the case and includes 256 MB of 1.6 ns GDDR3 at 980 MHz overclockable to 1.08 GHz. All three models have VGA, DVI and TV-Out connectors.

Video Taiwanese BenQ plans to release a new 20-inch widescreen LCD monitor aimed at gamers and movie viewers. The FP202W's 8 ms response time should do away with unwanted effects such as ghost images. The monitor, expected to hit stores before the end of the year, offers 1680x1050 resolution and 600:1 contrast ratio. It also includes proprietary Senseye digital enhancement technology and a hot key for switching from digital to analog signal.

Motherboard Albatron has announced an nForce4 board aimed at dual-core Intel processors that dispenses the circuit board usually required on SLI products. The PX19-SLI has another interesting characteristic: the manufacturer has replaced older COM and parallel ports with additional USB ports, an RCA digital audio output port and a slot for the optional energy management mPower II card. The board supports 1,066 MHz FSB, DDR2-667 memory, Serial ATA II, six-channel audio and Gigabit Ethernet.
