S3 Graphics unveils Chrome S20 GPUs

Video S3 Graphics has officially announced this week its Chrome S20 series, which initially comprises two PCI Express chips, both DirectX 9.0-compatible. The S27 is said to run at the highest frequency in the industry: 700 MHz. It has eight parallel pixel pipelines and four vertex engines, supports DDR or GDDR3 memory and features an open multi-GPU technology called MultiChrome. The lower end S25 is also equipped with eight pixel pipelines, but supports only GDDR2. Both 90-nm chips are limited to Pixel Shader 2.0+. The products should be available by the end of the year.

ASUS launches silent Radeon X1600 XT

ASUS has announced a Radeon X1600 XT card equipped with a new cooling solution. The EAX1600XT Silent/TVD/256M uses copper heatpipes to transfer the heat from the GPU to a huge heatsink grill on the back of the board, where better airflow helps to dissipate it. The 16-pixel pipeline card is clocked at 590 MHz and has 256 MB of GDDR3 memory at 1.38 GHz.

TI launches PCI Express-to-PCI bridge

Bus Texas Instruments has announced the XIO2000 PCI Express-to-PCI bridge. According to the company, the device has a x1 lane upstream port connection to PCI Express root complex, providing support for up to six x1 PCI endpoint devices on its downstream side. The XIO2000, which comes in a 201-pin Microstar BGA package, is fully compliant to the PCI Express to PCI/PCI-X Bridge Specification Revision 1.0. Suggested price in 1,000-unit quantities is USD 14.95.

Pretec plans world’s tiniest USB drive

Memory Pretec plans to introduce a device supposed to be the world’s tiniest USB Flash drive. Measuring 1.06x0.74x0.47 inches (2.7x1.9x1.2 cm) and weighing only 0.3 ounce (1 gram), the iDisk Diamond is smaller than a standard USB connector. On the downside, it has a limited storage capacity of 128 MB. The card fits into the computer’s USB 2.0 port beneath the prong that goes inside a normal USB connector.

Intel ships dual-core Xeon MP chips

CPU A month after releasing its first dual-core Xeon processor, Intel announced that it has started shipping MP varieties, all based on the Paxville core. The 7000 series includes chips running at up to 3 GHz and using a 667 MHz FSB. Early next year, the company will unveil new chipsets and processors supporting 800 MHz FSB. Prices of the new chips range from USD 1,177 and USD 3,157 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Viewsonic readies 2 ms LCD display

Video Viewsonic will introduce in the beginning of November a 19-inch LCD display with 2 ms response time. The 1280x1024 VX922 is expected to be the first in the world to reach such speed. The company will also release, in December, the VX2022, a 3 ms widescreen model (1680x1050) with 16:10 aspect ratio. Both displays are based on Viewsonic’s ClearMotiv technology.

Video Futuremark announced a new benchmark tool called 3DMarkMobile06 aimed at companies developing 3D handheld devices supporting OpenGL ES 1.0 and 1.1. It claims that the software is the first to provide accurate performance measurements of embedded graphics solutions. The first version, to be available in November, is exclusive for use on 3D hardware development. Tests include image quality and pixel, vertex, post and CPU processing.

Overclockers reach 1 GHz with ATI GPU

Video Finnish overclockers have established a new record by taking a Radeon X1800 XT GPU to 1 GHz. Sampsa Kurri and Ville Suvanto achieved exactly 1.003 GHz clock speed and 1.881 GHz (DDR) memory speed while keeping system stability. The pair used a custom-built liquid nitrogen system that cooled the graphics processor to minus-80 degrees Celsius.

Intel readies Pentium 4 supporting VT

CPU DigiTimes reports, citing mainboard makers, that Intel is going to introduce two Pentium 4 models supporting Virtualization Technology on November 13. The 662 and 672 chips operate at 3.6 and 3.8 GHz, use an 800 MHz frontside bus and integrate 2 MB of L2 cache. According to the site, pricing will be similar to that of current 660 and 670 processors.

Samsung samples GDDR4 devices

Memory Samsung this week announced that it is already providing graphics card makers with samples of GDDR 4 memory chips. According to the company, the 256 Mb parts transfer data at up to 2.5 Gbps and will soon reach 2.8 Gbps. New technologies called Data Bus Inversion (DBI) and Multi-Preamble helped eliminate data transmission delay. Mass production is expected do begin in the second quarter of 2006 with high-performance graphics cards picking up in the second half.

IBM unveils Xbox 360 Power-based chip

CPU IBM this week unveiled the custom CPU that will equip the Xbox 360 videogame. The yet to be named processor, derived from the Power design, brings three multi-threaded cores operating at 3.2 GHz, 1 MB shared L2 cache and 5.4 Gb/s per-pin FSB. The 90-nm chip has 165 million transistors and is in production at the company’s East Fishkill (New York) fab and at Chartered Semiconductor (Singapore).

OCZ has announced its first memory modules featuring Xtreme Thermal Convection (XTC) heatspreaders. The gold layered devices are said to allow increased ventilation and heat dissipation due to an innovative honeycomb design. The PC-3200 and PC-3500 Gold GX series have latencies of 2-2-2-5 and are available in 512 MB modules and 1 GB dual channel kits.

Intel releases ATI-based motherboard

After some intense rumors, Intel has officially released its D101GGC motherboard, based on ATI’s Radeon Xpress 200 chipset. The core logic, which includes Radeon X300-based graphics, is aimed at socket 775 Pentium 4 and Celeron D processors. The board uses ATI’s own IXP 450 south bridge. The deal is expected to boost ATI’s presence in the integrated GPU segment and relieve Intel of a shortage of its own cheaper models. The D101GGC’s full specs are as follows:

Aruba unveils mobile VoIP architecture

LAN Aruba Networks introduced its Mobile Edge architecture for securely connecting mobile workers to enterprise VoIP and data networks. It is enabled by new controlled access points and updated ArubaOS software. The AP-65 allows users to create temporary corporate hotspots at any location with an available internet-connected Ethernet port while the low-cost AP-41 lets telecommuters and executives extend the corporate WLAN to their home offices.
