This week, D-Link announced the availability of its first 802.11ac router, the Cloud Router 5700 (DIR-865L).

Wi-Fi standards have gone from 802.11a to 802.11.b, 802.11.g, 802.11.n and now to 802.11.ac. The new standard is dubbed “fifth-generation Wi-Fi” because it’s the fifth generation of the technology certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance marketing consortium. Unlike the 802.11n wireless standard, which can use either the 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz frequency bands, 802.11ac devices operate exclusively on the 5 GHz band, which is less prone to interference.

The Cloud Router 5700 makes use of a Broadcom dual-band wireless chip, providing speeds of up to 1,300 Mbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. The Cloud Router 5700 features D-Link’s Cloud App, allowing consumers to monitor and control the home network remotely. It also provides users with easy access to manage and stream local content from a connected USB drive to mobile devices via D-Link’s SharePort mobile app. In addition, the Cloud Router 5700 comes with four Gigabit Ethernet ports and is backwards compatible with previous generation 802.11 wireless standards.

The Cloud Router 5700 (DIR-865L) is now available with a retail price of USD 189.99 at Amazon.com and Newegg.com.
