Computex 2012: Fractal Design Showcases New Small Cases

During this Computex, Fractal Design released a new series of small cases, called “Node.” Two models were released: Node 304, which is a small form factor (SFF) case targeted to Mini-ITX motherboards, and Node 605, which is an HTPC case targeted to microATX motherboards.

The highlights of the Node 304 are: support for up to six 3.5” or 2.5” hard drives or SSDs (usually SFF cases support only half this amount, if that many), CPU coolers up to 6.5” (165 mm) tall, and video cards up to 12.2” (310 mm) long, allowing you to build a small yet powerful gaming system. The Node 304 supports regular power supplies, so you won’t need to buy an SFX12V unit. There are some limitations, though. For installing long video cards, you have to remove two of the hard drive/SSD bays, and you won’t be able to install video cards longer than 6.7” (170 mm) when using a power supply deeper than 6.3” (160 mm). This case comes with three hydraulic-bearing fans, one at the rear and two at the front.

The Node 605 is an HTPC (Home Theater PC) case with an aluminum front panel. It supports video cards up to 11” (280 mm) long, but this is reduced to 7.1” (180 mm) when all four hard drive/SSD bays are populated. This case supports ATX motherboards and has seven expansion slots.
