Today, Apple introduced its newest smartphone, the long awaited iPhone 5. According to the company, the iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone in the world, being 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 features an anodized aluminum body, a 4” retina display (1136x640), an Apple-designed A6 processor, and support for GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, GPS, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi technologies.

The new iPhone 5 also brought an 8-megapixel camera that is 25 percent smaller than the iPhone 4S’s camera. This camera features a sapphire crystal lens cover that is thinner and more durable than standard glass with the ability to provide crystal clear images. The new panorama feature lets you capture jaw-dropping panoramic images of up to 28 megapixels by simply moving the camera across a scene in one smooth motion. New video features include improved stabilization, video face detection for up to 10 faces, and the ability to take still photos as you record. A front camera can also be used for self-portraits and recording 720p HD video. The new iPhone also has three microphones (front, bottom and back) that will be used for voice recognition and noise cancelation.

As rumored earlier, the new iPhone has a new connector, called Lightning. According to Apple, this new connector is more durable than the previous one.

The new iPhone 5 runs Apple’s iOS 6 operating system and will be available in the U.S. in either white and silver or black and slate, with a suggested retail price of USD 199 for the 16 GB model, USD 299 for the 32 GB model, and USD 399 for the 64 GB model.

The iPhone 5 will be available from the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and select Apple authorized resellers. The iPhone 5 will be available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK on Friday, September 21. Customers can pre-order their iPhone 5 beginning Friday, September 14.
